Burba Lake Cottage Introduce
For residents and service members in the heart of Maryland, finding a venue that combines historical character with a peaceful natural setting is a priority for special occasions. Burba Lake Cottage, located within the secure grounds of Fort George G. Meade, stands as a premier example of Maryland’s rustic architectural heritage. Built in 1937, this charming one-story building features an authentic log-cabin appearance that provides a warm, inviting atmosphere for any gathering. Situated in the southeastern portion of the installation, the cottage is the crown jewel of the Burba Park Recreation Area, offering a tranquil escape from the bustling corridors of Anne Arundel County.
The cottage is managed by the Directorate of Family and Morrow, Welfare and Recreation (MWR), ensuring a high standard of professional oversight. It serves as a versatile community hub, hosting everything from intimate family reunions and retirement parties to formal military unit functions and weddings. Because it is located on a military installation, the cottage offers a level of security and exclusivity that is highly valued by the local Maryland military and civilian workforce. The surrounding landscape, dominated by the serene waters of Burba Lake and lush greenery, provides a picturesque backdrop that changes beautifully with Maryland’s four distinct seasons.
Location and accessibility are key components of the Burba Lake Cottage experience. The facility is located at 4424 McKay St, Fort Meade, MD 20755, USA. For local users, its position is incredibly convenient, situated between the major metropolitan hubs of Baltimore and Washington, D.C. The cottage is easily reachable via major Maryland thoroughfares such as Route 175, Route 32, and the Baltimore-Washington Parkway (I-295). As part of a well-planned recreational complex, the site is designed to be inclusive, featuring a wheelchair-accessible entrance and a dedicated wheelchair-accessible parking lot, ensuring that all guests can attend events without mobility barriers.
While the cottage is nestled in a quiet, park-like setting, it remains close to essential post amenities. For those utilizing the recreational areas for extended periods, such as the nearby camping grounds, the accessibility of the facility is enhanced by its proximity to modern conveniences. The blacktop walking path that encircles Burba Lake provides an easy, one-mile loop for guests to enjoy before or after an event. It is important for local users to note that because the cottage is on-post, access is typically limited to Department of Defense (DoD) ID cardholders and their sponsored guests, which maintains the quiet and secure nature of the neighborhood.
The services offered at Burba Lake Cottage are designed to provide a comprehensive "do-it-yourself" event solution. The management provides the essential infrastructure and heavy equipment, allowing hosts to customize their events to their specific needs. As a guest-cleaned facility, it encourages a sense of community responsibility while keeping rental fees accessible for military families and DoD civilians. The following services and logistical supports are standard for the cottage:
- Year-round rental availability for indoor events, with climate-controlled heating and central air conditioning systems.
- A fully equipped professional kitchen featuring a refrigerator, freezer, microwave, warming oven, and an ice-making machine.
- Administrative support through the Fort Meade Outdoor Recreation office for reservations and event planning.
- On-site maintenance and safety oversight, including regular inspections and provided fire safety equipment.
- Flexible seating arrangements with provided tables and chairs to accommodate groups of up to 150 people.
- Sponsorship assistance guidelines for hosting non-DoD guests, ensuring they can safely access the installation for the event.
- Post-event cleaning equipment provided on-site, including mops, buckets, and brooms to facilitate the guest-cleaning policy.
The features and highlights of Burba Lake Cottage reflect its history as a recreation center that has maintained its integrity since the 1930s. The interior is spacious and functional, designed to host a variety of event styles from formal banquets to casual workshops. The blend of historic "integrity of feeling" with modern necessities like updated restrooms makes it a unique find in the Maryland region. Some of the most notable features include:
- A rustic assembly hall with a massive fieldstone fireplace and chimney, creating a cozy focal point for winter gatherings.
- An integrated stage area equipped with spotlights and a lectern, perfect for presentations, speeches, or live entertainment.
- A large outside patio area that includes a heavy-duty charcoal grill, allowing events to transition seamlessly from indoors to outdoors.
- Scenic views of Burba Lake, with direct access to fishing piers where licensed anglers can enjoy catch-and-release fishing.
- Two adjacent playgrounds that make the cottage an ideal choice for family-oriented events with young children.
- Included recreational equipment for use in the surrounding park, such as horseshoe pits with provided stakes and shoes.
- Ample indoor space with 14 round tables and 11 long tables provided as part of the rental fee.
For those interested in reserving the cottage or seeking more information about eligibility and current rental rates, the Fort Meade Outdoor Recreation office is the primary point of contact. Reservations are typically made in person to verify eligibility, but general inquiries can be handled via phone. The contact information is as follows:
- Address: 4424 McKay St, Fort Meade, MD 20755, USA
- Main Phone: (301) 677-3029
- Alternate/Mobile Contact: +1 301-677-3029
What is worth choosing about Burba Lake Cottage? For Marylanders connected to the military community, it is the perfect marriage of affordability and ambiance. The flat rental fee (currently $300 per day) provides access to a large, historic, and fully equipped building that would cost significantly more in the private sector. The "all-inclusive" nature of the kitchen and furniture means that hosts can focus their budget on catering and decor rather than logistical rentals. Furthermore, the location is worth choosing for its peaceful, "tame" environment; while it isn't deep wilderness, it offers a level of quiet relaxation that is hard to find so close to the urban centers of the Baltimore-Washington corridor.
Choosing the cottage also means choosing to be part of a tradition. Many families and units return to Burba Lake year after year because of the friendly staff and the reliable quality of the facilities. The ability to walk the lake trial, watch the birds, and let the kids play at the park while an event is underway makes it a holistic experience rather than just a room rental. For those seeking a professional, factual, and charming venue that honors Maryland’s history while serving today's community, Burba Lake Cottage remains a top-tier choice.

Customer Reviews
My son an do went camping here and it was nice. Quite and clean. The tent camping grounds was very open. There was a bathroom and shower area if needed which my son enjoyed. The RV camping area seemed like it had more people using it, so if your bringing an RV call ahead to reserve a spot. Burba lake was nice and great place to walk around with family as there are a few playground for the kids along the trial. Pretty quite and everyone there was friendly in terms of both the staff at outdoor recreation and the people I came across while camping and walking around the lake. It's not the type of camping grounds where your out in the wilderness and surrounded by endless trees and nature. So it's great if you want to introduce someone to tent camping as there minor traffic (really minor, like one car or truck every hour or so during the day). Oh, and there's the bathroom and shower, so it's very tame camping. Peaceful and relaxing place.
Bring a fan and bug spray. Don't go in the water or let your pets near it. It's a swamp
A nice place for a walk. People fish here, but I wouldn't recommend it. The water looks fairly murky. Lots of ducks (which can be fun but messy). It's about .75 miles around the pond. A couple cute bridges. Several pavilions.
You could do a lot more to make this nice for the young enlisted kids that all they could afford for their wedding is the cottage. The floors need replaced. The bathrooms are dated. It could use a good scrub down. The fireplace needs repaired.
A beautiful, affordable, rental cottage. Can accommodate up to 150 guests. It is definitely a DIY kind of place, so if you don't mind putting in the work and need extra space for your guests this is the place. Great location with beautiful views.
