Camp Golden Pond Introduce

For residents of Central Pennsylvania, the search for a classic, back-to-basics wilderness experience often leads to the scenic landscapes of Huntingdon County. Camp Golden Pond, located in Petersburg, is a cherished destination that embodies the spirit of traditional American camping. Spanning 55 acres of lush forest and featuring the tranquil seven-acre Lake Louise, this facility has transitioned from a dedicated Girl Scout camp into a vibrant community-run retreat. Managed by the "Friends of Golden Pond," it serves as a bridge between the nostalgia of youth camping and the modern need for an accessible, natural escape for families, groups, and outdoor enthusiasts.

The camp is uniquely positioned to offer an immersive nature experience that focuses on "unplugging." Rather than high-tech amenities and manicured RV rows, visitors find a world of rustic charm, where the crackle of a campfire and the reflection of the moon on the water are the primary attractions. Its history as a scout camp is evident in its layout, which emphasizes community building, team-building activities, and environmental education. For Pennsylvanians looking for a place where their children can explore the woods safely or where a large group can gather without the distractions of city life, Camp Golden Pond provides a rare, authentic backdrop.

Location and accessibility are major advantages for those traveling within the state. Situated at 5126 Eberle Road, Petersburg, PA 16669, the camp is approximately a half-hour drive from State College and Penn State University. This makes it an excellent choice for alumni groups or families visiting for Nittany Lion events who prefer a wooded setting over a traditional hotel. It is also within easy reach of Raystown Lake and the Rothrock State Forest, placing it at the heart of Pennsylvania's premier outdoor recreation region.

Accessibility at the camp has been a point of focus for the management team. The facility features wheelchair-accessible entrances, parking lots, and restrooms, ensuring that the beauty of the Allegheny Mountains is available to everyone. While the terrain is naturally forested and includes typical mountain paths, the main lodge and several key gathering areas are designed to accommodate those with mobility needs. The on-site parking is free and spacious enough to handle the larger vans or buses often used by youth organizations and school groups.

  • Seven distinct lodging units including rustic cabins and larger lodges for groups.
  • Dedicated tent camping sites for those who prefer a more traditional experience.
  • Full access to Lake Louise for canoeing, kayaking, and catch-and-release fishing.
  • A commercial-grade kitchen in the main lodge, perfect for large events or weddings.
  • Outdoor grilling stations and fire rings provided at each major unit.
  • Archery range and gaga ball pit for youth and team-building activities.
  • Gender-neutral restrooms and public shower facilities.
  • Year-round lodging availability, including heated units for winter retreats.

The features and highlights of Camp Golden Pond revolve around its versatile recreational infrastructure. One of the most popular spots is the covered porch at the main lodge, which offers a stunning view of the lake and serves as a central hub for social gatherings. For more active guests, the camp features a traverse wall and a network of hiking trails that wind through the 55-acre property. These trails are particularly popular during the autumn months when the foliage in Huntingdon County is at its peak, providing a vibrant canopy of reds and golds.

Another highlight is the camp's commitment to being a safe and inclusive space. It is recognized as an LGBTQ+ friendly and transgender safespace, reflecting the inclusive values of the community members who saved the camp from closure. For families, the "kid-friendly" nature of the park is its biggest draw. From educational workshops to simple nature walks around the lake, the environment is designed to foster a sense of wonder and independence in young campers. Pets are also part of the family here, as the camp is dog-friendly, provided they are kept on a leash.

  • Private seven-acre Lake Louise for non-motorized boating and scenery.
  • Knowledgable on-site staff and volunteer "Friends of Golden Pond" support.
  • Proximity to Penn State University, making it ideal for graduation or game weekends.
  • Kid-friendly hikes and structured outdoor activities like archery.
  • Flexible event venue capabilities for weddings, reunions, and corporate picnics.
  • A "Signal Weak, Connection Strong" philosophy that encourages true social interaction.
  • Diverse flora and fauna, including frequent sightings of ospreys and local wildlife.
  • Affordable camping fees that support the non-profit mission of the facility.

To book a stay or inquire about hosting a large-scale event, you can contact the reservation manager directly. The camp accepts various payment methods, including credit cards, debit cards, and checks, making the registration process simple for both individuals and organizations.

What is worth choosing about Camp Golden Pond is the opportunity to be a part of a successful community preservation story. When you stay here, you are directly contributing to the "Friends of Golden Pond" mission to keep this historic land available for future generations. It is worth choosing for its simplicity; in an era where many campgrounds are becoming glorified parking lots with Wi-Fi, Golden Pond remains a place where you can actually hear the wind in the pines and see the stars without light pollution.

The rustic nature of the cabins means you should come prepared for a "nature-first" experience—this is a place for those who enjoy the smell of woodsmoke and the sounds of the forest at night. For youth groups and scout troops, it provides the perfect training ground for outdoor skills in a controlled, safe environment. For families, it offers a budget-friendly way to enjoy the best of Pennsylvania’s natural beauty while staying close to the cultural attractions of State College. Whether you are launching a canoe into the mist of Lake Louise or gathered around a fire in Unit II, Camp Golden Pond offers a sense of peace and belonging that is uniquely Pennsylvanian. Would you like me to help you find a list of local supply stores in Petersburg or provide details on the archery certification required for group events?

We reserved Unit II for a weekend in mid-September. Multiple cabins & bunks had a large amount of mouse droppings, leaves and acorns when we arrived. We tried to sweep everything out and get on with the weekend. After dark, girls were lowering a window shade when a mouse nest (mama and babies) fell on their bunk/sleeping bag. We looked through other cabins, hoping to move the girls since they were very upset, but found a mouse in the rafters of another. By which point it was clear that no one was going to sleep that weekend. We called the camp contact and where told "well, you are in nature" and had no other options to move sites/cabins, so had to pack up 12+ girls and supplies and head home at 10pm.While we do recognize we were "in nature", it was not appropriate to expect campers to sleep in cabins with active animal nests and droppings. Requests for a response and at least a partial refund were ignored, hence the review. We can't speak for other cabins/sites, but were very disappointed in the poor condition of the cabins (which were clean when we visited earlier that summer) and loss of our girl's hard earned funds. We would recommend anyone thoroughly inspect sleeping quarters upon check in (we didn't because of time constraints and didn't realize the problem until it was too late).

What a magical place. Attended one of the Adult Enrichment Weekends to gain skills to help my Girl Scout troop better enjoy the outdoors. The trainers were so knowledgeable and the camp is one that I will definitely be returning to with my Girl Scout troop and probably also as a family.

Traveled an hour and a half to spend an amazing weekend here with friends and my kids. Stayed in rustic units, condition as expected, and would absolutely stay again. Already planning to return again, possibly in different units depending on the size of our group.Thank you for keeping your camp alive and sharing it with us!
