Camp Wyanokie Introduce
Camp Wyanokie stands as a testament to the enduring appeal of the New Jersey wilderness. Established in 1919 and later deeded to a consortium of five towns—Caldwell, Fairfield, North Caldwell, Roseland, and West Caldwell—this 150-acre sanctuary offers a "back-to-basics" experience that is becoming increasingly rare in the modern world. Situated on the edge of the sprawling Norvin Green State Forest, Camp Wyanokie provides an authentic escape for New Jersey residents who crave isolation, serenity, and a direct connection with nature. Whether you are a seasoned hiker, a family looking for a weekend adventure, or a local group seeking a gathering spot, the camp offers a pristine landscape of forests, streams, and a sparkling five-acre lake.
The philosophy of Camp Wyanokie is centered on preservation and rustic simplicity. Unlike commercial campgrounds that feature paved roads and electrical hookups, Wyanokie is a place of unpaved paths and starlit nights. It serves as an ecological wonderland where visitors can observe local wildlife, from salamanders and tadpoles in the lake shallows to bald eagles soaring above the Highlands. For over a century, it has been a cherished destination for West Essex area campers, providing a communal space that feels like a private forest getaway. It is a strictly "carry-in, carry-out" facility, ensuring that the beauty of the land remains untarnished for generations to come.
Location and accessibility are primary features of this West Milford gem. Located at 550 Snake Den Rd, West Milford, NJ 07480, the camp is accessible via a township-maintained gravel road that winds through the dense forest. While it feels worlds away from civilization, it is conveniently positioned for residents of Northern and Central New Jersey. For those navigating the region, the camp is located near major landmarks like the Monksville Reservoir and the Wanaque Reservoir. On-site parking is available for visitors, providing a secure starting point for both overnight campers and day-trippers. However, travelers should note that the final approach via Snake Den Road is narrow and rustic, setting the stage for the wilderness experience that awaits.
The services at Camp Wyanokie are tailored toward self-sufficient outdoor enthusiasts. The camp does not provide running water, electricity, or Wi-Fi, emphasizing a true "off-grid" experience. Instead, the focus is on providing the essential infrastructure for a successful rustic stay. The services offered include:
- Online reservation system for all campsites and the picnic pavilion to ensure a guaranteed spot.
- Dedicated "rustic" tent sites, many featuring traditional lean-to shelters for added protection from the elements.
- Supply of firewood bundles available for purchase on-site, supporting local maintenance efforts.
- Professional management and oversight by the Camp Wyanokie Commission to maintain site safety and standards.
- Maintenance of clearly marked trailheads that connect directly to the larger New York/New Jersey Trail Conference network.
- Group reservation services for organizations such as Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, and local community groups.
- Year-round ecological preservation and trail maintenance to keep the forest accessible and healthy.
The features and highlights of the property make it a premier destination for those who appreciate the outdoors. From the quiet shores of its central lake to the rugged overlooks nearby, there is something for everyone. Key highlights include:
- A central 5-acre lake perfect for catch-and-release fishing (NJ license required) and bird watching.
- The "Lions Den" Picnic Pavilion, a large covered area equipped with tables and a charcoal grill, ideal for family reunions or group outings.
- Direct access to miles of hiking trails, ranging from kid-friendly lakeside loops to more strenuous paths leading to panoramic views of the New York City skyline.
- Designated fire rings at each campsite, approved by the NJ Fire Service for safe evening campfires.
- Individualized barbecue grills and picnic tables at campsites to facilitate a comfortable outdoor dining experience.
- A pet-friendly environment where leashed dogs are welcome to join their owners on the trails and at camp.
- Proximity to Norvin Green State Forest, offering thousands of additional acres for exploration and high-point vistas.
For those planning a visit, it is important to remember that all use of the camp, whether for a day trip or an overnight stay, requires a permit obtained through their online portal. Management is known for being helpful and responsive, ensuring that all campers feel respected and safe during their stay. Absolutely love this place. I came a few weekends ago and love it so we decided to do a family weekend this weekend and we had a blast. For the most part it’s quiet there’s some that do like to be loud but they respond and handle the situation professionally. I will definitely be coming back every weekend we get the chance. Everything was well maintained except 1 lean to at map #6 which was used as everyone’s bathroom assuming because it smelled bad and a really strong smell of urine. Those minor things mean nothing when you see how gorgeous it is. The hiking trails are easy scenic trails that you must hike if you come stay. Mike has been amazing and very helpful along with fast when it comes to pleasing the campers, making sure everyone is respected and making sure we’re all happy while we stay. They also sell bundles of wood and I will not buy from anyone else. I bought 5 bundles and it lasted from Friday to Sunday morning. You can’t beat it between hiking, fishing and just relaxing enjoying the amazing land and sounds this camp has it all in one place. Thank you so much for having us we’ve had a blast and look forward to coming back as much as we possibly can.
It was great for a day picnic, now we are planning camping there
The location itself is lovely, but unfortunately the sites require a lot of cleanup to be usable. When we arrived to set up camp, we noticed the ground was covered in shattered glass. The glass carpeted the site itself, and the surrounding area, going right down to the trail. We checked a couple of other available sites and saw more shattered glass covering the ground, discarded opened tin cans and other garbage. One even had a toxic, half burned railroad tie.As we were unable to stay due to safety concerns, I reached out to the site contact to advise accordingly. Once the camp contact was made aware of the situation, they were quick to process a refund and confirmed they will be visiting to clean up the site.
Spent a lovely autumn night at the Southwest Campsite! It was clean and well-maintained. The site provided an ash can and shovel for the fire ring. We did see a black bear poking around a nearby campsite briefly after we arrived so be aware that they are in the area and pack out all trash and food when not in use. The website said that the sites were all booked for the weekend but we were alone in the area for the night apart from a group of folks by the lakeside - guessing some damp weather and drizzles scared a lot of people off. It’s a beautiful and quiet area with easy access to parking.
