Cardinal Campground Introduce
For those seeking a departure from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, Cardinal Campground in Campbell, New York, offers an authentic, "old-fashioned" family camping experience. Nestled in the scenic rural landscape of Steuben County, this campground is a favorite for local New Yorkers who appreciate a quiet, well-maintained environment. Unlike the sprawling, high-traffic commercial resorts, Cardinal Campground prides itself on its peaceful atmosphere, where the primary soundtrack consists of songbirds by day and crickets or bullfrogs by night. It is a place designed for relaxation, allowing visitors to reconnect with nature and their families in a serene, wooded setting.
The campground is characterized by its spacious, grassy sites—many of which are shaded by mature trees—providing a sense of privacy that is often missing from more modern facilities. The owners are frequently praised by visitors for their friendly, hands-on management style and their dedication to keeping the grounds in pristine condition. Whether you are a local resident from the Southern Tier or traveling from as far as Rochester or Elmira, the welcoming spirit of Cardinal Campground makes it feel like a home away from home. It is a destination that captures the essence of the Finger Lakes region's natural beauty while offering just the right amount of amenities to ensure a comfortable stay.
Cardinal Campground is located at 7323 Dee Rd, Campbell, NY 14821, putting it in a prime position for exploring the southern Finger Lakes. It is conveniently situated near the Interstate 86 corridor, making it an easy drive for residents across New York State. However, experienced travelers offer a crucial tip for those navigating the local roads: when approaching the campground, it is best to take the route directly out of the village of Campbell. While GPS units may occasionally suggest taking Exit 41 to navigate more western backroads, this can lead travelers—especially those with larger rigs—up a long and rough dirt road. Following signs for Savona or using exit 39 or 40 is generally recommended for a smoother arrival.
Accessibility is a priority at the site, which features a wheelchair-accessible parking lot to accommodate all guests. The campground's layout consists of 65 total sites, including 65 electrical hookup sites, which are situated on relatively flat terrain that is easy to navigate. Its proximity to regional landmarks like the Corning Museum of Glass (just 10 miles away) and the stunning Watkins Glen State Park makes it a strategic basecamp for tourists. Despite its proximity to these major attractions, the campground remains tucked away enough to maintain its signature quietude, offering on-site parking and a layout that is manageable for families with young children or seniors.
- Electrical hookup sites available for both RV and trailer camping, with 30 and 50 amp service options.
- Meticulously maintained public restrooms and hot showers for the convenience of all campers.
- A crystal-clear outdoor swimming pool for cooling off during the warm summer months.
- On-site dump station and a portable sewer service (weekly clean-outs) available for a small fee.
- A camp store featuring a "must-visit" candy corner for children, ice cream novelties, and essential camping supplies.
- Coin-operated laundry facilities to assist with longer stays or family needs.
- Firewood and ice available for purchase on-site, ensuring you have everything needed for a perfect evening fire.
- Reservations are managed via phone or in person to ensure a personalized booking experience.
One of the primary highlights of Cardinal Campground is its dedication to family-friendly activities that don't require high-tech gadgets. The property features a beautiful fishing pond (New York fishing license required) where guests can spend a quiet afternoon by the water. For more active recreation, the campground offers a volleyball court, basketball hoops, horseshoe pits, and a playground that is perfect for younger children to burn off energy. The sites are large enough to accommodate 30-foot to 36-foot RVs with plenty of room to spare for outdoor setups, and each site is equipped with its own fire ring and picnic table.
Another highlight is the sense of community found here. The campground often hosts themed weekends and seasonal events, such as "Christmas in July" or trick-or-treating, which help create lasting memories for families. The "candy corner" in the camp store is a legendary feature among younger guests, offering penny candy and treats that evoke a sense of nostalgia. For those who enjoy exploring beyond the camp, the proximity to the Finger Lakes wine trails and the world-class hiking at Watkins Glen means there is never a shortage of day-trip opportunities. Yet, many guests find that the peacefulness of the camp itself is enough to keep them on the property for their entire stay.
- Large, grassy campsites with plenty of shade, providing a private and natural feel.
- A dedicated swimming pool and a well-equipped playground, making it a top choice for families with kids.
- On-site fishing pond that offers a tranquil spot for relaxation and nature observation.
- Recreational amenities including volleyball, basketball, and horseshoe pits for friendly competition.
- Excellent cell phone reception reported for major carriers, allowing you to stay connected if needed.
- Pet-friendly policies that welcome well-behaved dogs to join the family camping adventure.
- Close proximity to the Corning Museum of Glass, wineries, and the scenic Watkins Glen State Park.
- Professional and friendly owners who go out of their way to ensure a peaceful and enjoyable stay.
For those interested in booking a site or learning more about seasonal availability, the management can be reached through their official office line. Given the campground's reputation for being "quiet and well-kept," sites tend to fill up quickly during the peak summer months and the autumn foliage season.

Cardinal Campground is worth choosing because it delivers a specific type of camping experience that is becoming increasingly rare: true peace and quiet. While many modern parks focus on maximizing the number of guests and loud entertainment, this campground prioritizes the quality of the stay and the beauty of the rural setting. It is worth choosing if you are a local New Yorker looking for a "staycation" that actually feels like a getaway, or if you are a traveler who wants to be near the Finger Lakes attractions without the noise of the main tourist strips.
The combination of fair camping fees, clean facilities, and a kid-friendly environment makes it a high-value choice for families. The owners' attention to detail—from the freshly mowed grass to the well-stocked candy corner—shows a level of care that ensures guests return year after year. Even without full sewer hookups at every site, the availability of a portable pump-out service shows a commitment to guest convenience. If you are looking for a place where you can fall asleep to the sounds of nature and wake up to the songs of birds, all while enjoying the hospitality of a "mom-and-pop" operation, Cardinal Campground is the ideal destination. It is a peaceful, scenic, and friendly slice of the Southern Tier that reminds us why camping is such a beloved New York tradition.

I've stayed here a few times and it's quite nice. I live about 90 minutes from here but its worth the drive. If you are looking for a quiet, small, and well kept campground: come here.
We were there recently visiting family for 2 1/2 weeks. It was so peaceful and the owners are great. Area was well kept and mowed. Firepit and picnic table at each site. I didn't use the bathrooms, pool or laundry facilities. The only downside was no sewer hookup, but they offer weekly clean outs for a small fee. If you go, be sure to take the road out of Campbell (I think it's exit 39 off the highway or 40, Savona), NOT the more western one if you're heading east; GPS may take you off exit 41 up a very long and rough dirt road.
Had a great time at CC this summer. Went on a wine tour of the finger lakes and camped here. The owners are an extremely nice family who will go out of their way to make the guests happy. They have very large sites with water and electricity and most of the guests are long term campers...so its nice an quiet. Thanks so much for a great weekend!
This was the first time at cardinal campground in 20 yrs. Very nice, lots of shade, big sites. Our rig was to long to access the dump station. Everything else was fine. Friendly, and quiet.
Very nice family employees who made sure we had everything we needed. Nothing but peace and quiet. Would have given 5 stars but our purchased firewood was too green to burn. Would definitely go back !
