Carterville Acres Campground Introduce
For New Yorkers seeking a sanctuary away from the relentless pace of urban life, Carterville Acres Campground emerges as a beacon of inclusivity and natural beauty. Nestled on a sprawling 200-acre property in the Southern Tug Hill region, this campground has recently undergone a revitalization under new ownership. It prides itself on being one of Central New York's most welcoming environments, where the philosophy is simple: every camper has a seat by the fire. Whether you are a local from Syracuse looking for a quick weekend escape or a traveler exploring the hidden gems of the Camden area, this facility offers a refreshing "back-to-nature" experience without the stress of over-commercialization.
The history of the property adds a layer of nostalgia and charm, as it formerly served as a Girl Scouts of America camp. Today, it has been thoughtfully converted into a commercial campground that retains its rustic, wooded character while introducing modern comforts. The recent updates in 2024 and 2025 have focused on renovating the private cabins and enhancing community spaces, making it a premier choice for group retreats, family reunions, and solo adventurers alike. The atmosphere is quiet and private, allowing guests to fully immerse themselves in the sounds of the surrounding forest and the tranquil waters of the onsite pond.
Location and accessibility are among the top reasons New York residents choose Carterville Acres. Situated at 93 Birmingham Road in Bernhards Bay (Camden area), the campground is a convenient 45-minute drive northeast of Syracuse. This proximity makes it an ideal "easy-access" retreat for those who want to spend more time at their campsite and less time on the road. The entrance and primary facilities are designed with accessibility in mind, featuring a wheelchair-accessible parking lot to ensure all guests can reach the main lodge and community areas comfortably.
Once on the grounds, guests find that the layout is intuitive and well-maintained. The property is positioned near several regional attractions, including the Salmon River for world-class fishing and Oneida Lake for boating and water sports. For those who enjoy terrestrial adventures, the campground provides direct access to local ATV and snowmobile trails, making it a year-round destination for motorized recreation. Despite its closeness to these active hubs, the campground itself remains a "hidden" spot, tucked away enough to provide the silence and stars that city dwellers often crave.
Carterville Acres Campground offers a comprehensive suite of services tailored to diverse camping styles. From those who prefer a solid roof over their heads to those who want the full "under the stars" experience, the following services are available:
- Nightly and weekly rentals for 10 private, newly renovated cabins equipped with electrical outlets, heaters, and essential furniture.
- Dedicated RV spaces that provide a woodsy, private feel, catering to both small campers and larger rigs.
- Scenic tent sites for traditionalists looking for a back-to-basics experience deep within the nature preserve.
- Kayaking and canoeing services, with rentals available to explore the protected nature preserve pond on-site.
- On-site firewood and ice sales, ensuring you have the essentials for a perfect campfire without leaving the property.
- Professional event support for those looking to host yoga retreats, mindful foraging workshops, or family gatherings.
- Regularly cleaned and stocked public restroom and shower facilities located centrally for easy access.

The features and highlights of Carterville Acres are designed to celebrate the outdoor lifestyle while fostering a sense of community. Notable highlights of the property include:

What is worth choosing about Carterville Acres Campground is the perfect balance it strikes between a rustic retreat and an inclusive community. In an era where many campgrounds are becoming overly crowded or exclusive, Carterville Acres stands out for its commitment to "camping for all." It is particularly worth choosing if you are looking for a place that accommodates groups; having 10 private cabins alongside RV and tent sites allows different types of campers to vacation together in one beautiful location. The transition from a former scout camp to a commercial park has been handled with care, preserving the sense of wonder and exploration that makes camping special.
Furthermore, the value of the onsite pond and nature preserve cannot be overstated. Being able to launch a kayak from a private beach and paddle through a protected area is a level of tranquility that is hard to find in more public parks. Whether you are visiting for the fishing, the nearby ATV trails, or simply to sit in an Adirondack chair with a good book, the new ownership has created an environment where you can truly "unplug." Choosing Carterville Acres means choosing a legacy of outdoor appreciation, modern cleanliness, and the authentic spirit of New York's Tug Hill region. It is a destination that invites you to slow down, breathe the pine-scented air, and reconnect with the people who matter most.

Just had a lovely weekend at Carterville Acres campground. My family and I stayed in the newly renovated cabins that also have heaters. The cabins have a queen sized bed along with bunk beds and still have plenty room to get ready. The cabin also had a dorm sized fridge along with microwave. The new owners are making great improvements in the property and buildings. I believe this will become a popular place for my family and I to visit.
Only 45 minutes from Syracuse makes this spot a great retreat with a small group. We rented a few cabins and used the lodge and outdoor picnic tables for group meals and activities. There’s easy everything: parking, stocked bathrooms, firewood on site, games and family activities, etc.The cabins are nice and certainly big enough for 3-4 people or a family. Private and quiet. Each cabin has a picnic table, porch and Adirondack chair with a small fire pit. But the community spaces are great.
Had an incredible overnight with a group of friends and couldn’t have found a better location. The picnic area and lodge was a perfect place for us to gather, set up snacks and meals, and even do some crafting. The cabins were incredibly cozy, clean, and felt very up to date, with amenities like electrical plugs, a fridge and a heater. And the lake was quiet and lovely. The entire feel was so idyllic - would give it more stars if I could!
We have had 2 low key camp-outs/retreats here - a “moms getaway” and a family camping weekend with several friend groups and their kids. Great experience overall. We stayed in the cabins both times and it felt more like a retreat than camping.Kids loved the creek, the pond, the playground, and using the kayaks. We (adults) loved having mini fridges and electric heat in the cabins, and the community fire pit area for group hangouts.
The new owner is awesome. Many upgrades so far and many more to come in the future. All cabins are now included and have electric. We had a Family Reunion there about 100 people. The facility was great. The screened Pavilion was a blessing to have avalible.
