Cathedral pines Introduce
For New York residents looking to escape the suburban sprawl and immerse themselves in a majestic woodland setting, Cathedral Pines County Park in Middle Island stands as one of Long Island's most tranquil retreats. This 320-acre park is situated along the headwaters of the Carmans River, offering a lush landscape dominated by towering pines and dense hardwoods. The park’s name is a testament to the awe-inspiring canopy of trees that creates a serene, cathedral-like atmosphere, making it a favorite destination for those who appreciate the quiet beauty of the Pine Barrens. Whether you are a seasoned camper or a family looking for a weekend adventure, Cathedral Pines provides a professional and friendly environment that highlights the best of Suffolk County’s natural resources.
The campground is well-regarded for its versatility, catering to individual families, youth groups, and large clubs alike. It strikes a balance between providing modern conveniences and preserving the rugged feel of the forest. Guests often remark on the cleanliness of the facilities and the helpfulness of the park staff, which contributes to an inviting community vibe. As a cornerstone of the Suffolk County Parks system, it serves as a vital green space where locals can reconnect with the outdoors, offering a refreshing change of pace from the typical beach-centric activities associated with the region.
Location and accessibility are key components of the appeal at Cathedral Pines. Nestled at 116 Yaphank Middle Island Road, the park is easily reached via major routes such as the Long Island Expressway (I-495). Its central location in Middle Island makes it a convenient getaway for residents from both the North and South Shores, as well as those traveling from the five boroughs. The park entrance is designed with accessibility in mind, featuring a wheelchair-accessible entrance and parking lot. Inside, the campground layout includes paved roads and thoughtfully placed sites that accommodate both standard vehicles and larger RV rigs. The proximity to the Prosser Pines Nature Preserve—home to a historic stand of white pines planted in 1812—further enhances the location's value for nature lovers and photographers.

For those bringing their own mobile homes, the park offers specialized sites that take the guesswork out of setup. What is worth choosing about Cathedral Pines County Park is the sheer quality of the forest experience it offers without requiring a long drive to the Adirondacks or Catskills. For New Yorkers, it provides a "deep woods" feeling right in the heart of Suffolk County. It is worth choosing for the mountain biker who wants to test their skills on some of the best-maintained trails on the island, and for the family who wants a safe, clean environment where their children can play freely. The privacy offered by the back-in sites, which often back up into dense woods, is a significant advantage over more open, crowded campgrounds.
Furthermore, the park’s commitment to accessibility and its "good for kids" atmosphere makes it a stress-free choice for parents. It is a quintessential Long Island outdoor experience that delivers on both adventure and relaxation.

Paved pull thru spots. Water and electric with a dump station onsite. Nice showers with hot water. If you're into hiking, there are a lot of trails.
Check in is easy, sites are drive-through, or you may get a back-in with deep woods right behind you: most private. Water is available at the office building spigot.
So glad it's open again! And so glad they didn't replace the legendary metal slide with all of the renovations they've done. Though I do not enjoy the newly paved road that runs right through the area at the front of the park where we used to love to check out the trees or toss a ball around. Restrooms are only open during camping season, so if you like to frequent parks in the off-seasons like we do, be prepared.
Been Camping Here since before 1977 with Boy Scouts. from Shoreham, Long Island, New York. Needs WiFi services throughout the Park, Optimum Emergency WiFi, nothing except at Office for WiFi
Most sites are dry camping. The ones in the woods are very private with lots of shade. Nice playground and walking trails. There is a community kitchen and bath houses. A good place for a family reunion. Not much else to do here but nice to get away.
