Cedar Mountain Campground Introduce

For those living in the Virginia Piedmont, finding a camping spot that balances accessibility with a true sense of isolation is a priority. Cedar Mountain Campground, located in the heart of Culpeper County, offers a straightforward, quiet retreat for local residents looking to disconnect from the digital noise of Northern Virginia and the suburban sprawl of Fredericksburg. This destination is tailored for the traditional camper—the person who values a patch of grass, a clear sky, and the proximity to Virginia’s deep historical roots. Unlike the high-activity resorts that dot the coast, this campground provides a grounded experience where the focus remains on the natural environment and the local landscape.

The campground’s identity is closely tied to its namesake, the historic Cedar Mountain. This area is rich with the echoes of the past, specifically the American Civil War, making it an ideal home base for history enthusiasts and local explorers. Residents of Culpeper and surrounding counties appreciate the park’s unpretentious atmosphere. It serves as a practical choice for long-term RV residents as well as weekenders who want to spend their days exploring the nearby Shenandoah National Park or visiting the award-winning wineries that have made this region a culinary destination. It is a place where the pace of life slows down significantly, allowing guests to appreciate the rolling hills and fresh air that define Central Virginia.

Location and accessibility are among the primary advantages for Virginia locals considering a stay here. Situated at 20114 Camp Rd, Culpeper, VA 22701, the campground is remarkably easy to reach from major regional thoroughfares like Route 15 and Route 29. For those traveling from the Washington D.C. metro area, it is a manageable drive of approximately 90 minutes, while Charlottesville and Fredericksburg residents can arrive in well under an hour. This makes it a perfect candidate for spontaneous trips where you want to spend less time on the road and more time at your site.

The facility is designed to accommodate various levels of physical ability, providing wheelchair-accessible entrances and a wheelchair-accessible parking lot. Once on the grounds, the layout is open and relatively flat, allowing for easier navigation between sites. Its proximity to the town of Culpeper—roughly a ten-minute drive—ensures that while you feel like you are in the "middle of nowhere," you are never far from essential supplies, local restaurants, or emergency services. This balance of rural seclusion and town proximity is a hallmark of the Culpeper camping experience.

Cedar Mountain Campground focuses on the essential services required for a successful outdoor stay, catering particularly well to the self-contained RV traveler. The services provided reflect a commitment to the "back-to-basics" camping philosophy that many Virginians prefer. The following services are currently offered:

  • Dedicated RV camping sites with various hookup options to accommodate different rig sizes.
  • Traditional tent sites for those looking for a more rugged and authentic outdoor experience.
  • On-site parking for both primary camping vehicles and secondary guest vehicles.
  • Propane station services, allowing campers to refill their tanks without having to leave the property.
  • A flexible reservation system that accepts major credit and debit cards for ease of booking.
  • Long-term site rental options for those needing a semi-permanent residence in the Culpeper area.
  • Daily trash collection and maintenance of the common grounds to ensure a clean environment.
  • Pet-friendly policies that allow local dog owners to bring their companions along for the adventure.

While the campground is known for its simplicity, it boasts several highlights that make it a unique stop in the Virginia Piedmont. The features are designed to facilitate social interaction and a deep appreciation for the outdoors. Key highlights include:

  • A large community pavilion that serves as a central hub for social cookouts, bingo nights, and group gatherings.
  • A private fishing pond where guests can enjoy a quiet afternoon by the water.
  • Designated picnic tables at sites, encouraging outdoor dining and family bonding.
  • Direct access to the fresh mountain air and scenic views characteristic of the Blue Ridge foothills.
  • Proximity to the Cedar Mountain Battlefield, allowing for educational walks and visits to a major historical landmark.
  • A quiet, "keep-to-themselves" culture that ensures a peaceful environment for those seeking rest.
  • Close access to local hiking trails, including the famous Old Rag Mountain in nearby Shenandoah.
  • A dark-sky friendly environment that provides excellent opportunities for stargazing away from city light pollution.

What is worth choosing at Cedar Mountain Campground is the sense of undisturbed tranquility it offers compared to more commercialized locations. For the local Virginia traveler who finds joy in the simple things—a well-maintained fire, a cold drink by the pond, and a quiet night's sleep—this park hits all the right notes. It is especially worth choosing if you are an RV owner who prefers a "launch point" strategy. Because it is located so centrally to Monticello, Luray Caverns, and Skyline Drive, you can set up your base here and explore a different world-class attraction every day without having to pack up your camp.

Additionally, the campground is a prime choice for those who value privacy. The layout and the culture of the park encourage a respectful distance between neighbors, making it a favorite for solo travelers and couples looking for a low-key retreat. The water quality is frequently cited as a highlight, featuring clear, fresh water without the metallic odors often found in rural wells. In a state as busy as Virginia, a place that offers "nothing to do" can be the greatest luxury of all. Choosing Cedar Mountain Campground means choosing a weekend where the only schedule you follow is the rising and setting of the sun over the Culpeper hills.

Not as bad as the reviews make it seem. Middle of nowhere and no amenities, which wasn't a big deal for us, don't know what shape the bathrooms were in or if they had showers. Stayed here for a month in November in our class a motor home. Everyone pretty much keeps to themselves. Water is great, no rust or sulfur smell. No internet or internet providers able to come service. Not too far from town though, only amount 10 mins away.

Do not go here!! My mother and her husband fell on hard times so she bought a camper and moved out there. It was nothing but trouble. She had her month paid up but decided to move out because she found a home and once she was moving her camper LEGALLY, the “maintenance” lady Helen came down running her mouth saying they were trespassing! We hired a lady to move her camper and this Helen lady started taking pictures of the moving lady’s vehicle after she had requested her not to do so. My mother owns her camper and was only renting the lot space. It was paid until the end of October. Then, to make matters worse, there were some words exchanged and the Helen woman proceeded to reach into my mothers truck and smacked my mother! Beware of this campground! It’s nothing but trouble and the owner backs up the maintenance lady. It’s run down, nothing to do for kids, and a bunch of cops in and out all the time. Stay away!

We've been going here for years. It is a dump, but there doesn't seem to be any place else around that has room for our huge family the weekends of the Apple Festival. Bathrooms are the worst, some toilets non-working, cobwebs everywhere, no paper towels to dry your hands and sometimes no toilet paper. On the up side, the owners usually have the place decorated nicely for Halloween and they bring firewood when we need it. It's an ok place if it's just for a weekend, but this year we are bringing our own bathroom in an RV. Can't take the nasty bathrooms anymore!

We had requested 50amp, the first site didn’t have any power. We moved to another site, same issue. We ended up plugging into the site beside us, it ended up being only 120volt. Was very frustrating, luckily it was a cool night. Will not be returning.

If I could do a negative stars I would. This place is awful! Smells like sewage all the time (sewage overflows into the pond). They have no amenities whatsoever! There are dead trees everywhere that they refuse to cut and they tell you they’re not responsible if they fall onto your property and do damage! Linda the owner is just rude and mean! If you ask her anything she will come around and stick a note on your door telling you she’s going to charge you extra for this and that just because you said something to her. She’s vindictive. She charges anyone that stays in the camper over 1 person 2$ extra a day! Then she charges outrageous fees to park there and it’s never the same! If you have more than one vehicle you have to pay an extra 10$!There’s always police there due to the drug addicts and lowlifes that live there. The mosquitos are awful! There’s never water if there is it’s always red and under a boil water notice. I advise to go down the road to the Madison campground. Stay away from here!
