Charlestown Breachway Introduce
Charlestown Breachway is a distinctive outdoor destination located along the southern coast of Rhode Island, offering a rugged and authentic coastal camping experience. Managed by the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management, this campground is situated on the east side of the "Breachway," a man-made channel that connects the tranquil waters of Ninigret Pond with the powerful surges of the Atlantic Ocean. Known primarily as a premier spot for self-contained RV enthusiasts, the area provides unparalleled access to some of the best saltwater fishing and panoramic ocean views in the state. For residents and visitors in the Rhode Island region, it represents a "no-frills" escape where the primary attraction is the raw beauty of the shoreline and the rhythmic sound of the waves.
The campground is essentially a designated section of a barrier beach area, offering 75 sites specifically for self-contained units. This means there are no traditional amenities like electricity, water hookups, or sewer connections at each site. Instead, campers embrace a "dry camping" lifestyle, relying on their vehicle's internal systems while enjoying a front-row seat to Block Island Sound. The environment is social yet focused on the natural surroundings, drawing a community of anglers, boaters, and families who appreciate the simplicity of a beach-side parking setup. While the sites are closely packed, the immediate proximity to the water and the Breachway channel makes it one of the most sought-after locations in South County during the summer months.
Location and Accessibility are significant factors for those planning a trip to Charlestown Breachway. Located at 812-774 Charlestown Beach Road in Charlestown, RI 02813, the campground is tucked away at the end of a scenic coastal drive. It is important for visitors to note that the final stretch of the road is often sand-packed and can be rough with potholes, requiring careful navigation for larger RVs. Despite its secluded feel, it is accessible from major regional routes, making it a convenient getaway for locals. The facility has also made efforts to ensure that the natural beauty is available to everyone through specific accessibility features:
- Wheelchair accessible entrance providing a smooth transition to the main areas.
- Dedicated wheelchair accessible parking lots for both campers and day-use visitors.
- Wheelchair accessible restrooms, specifically composting toilets, located within the campground area.
- Direct access to the boat launch ramp, which is highly accessible for those bringing kayaks or small motorized vessels.
- Proximity to Charlestown State Beach, allowing for easy walks from the campsites to the shoreline.
Services Offered at Charlestown Breachway are streamlined to preserve the environmental integrity of the barrier beach. Because the site is located in an environmentally sensitive zone, the services are focused on basic necessities and supporting self-contained camping. Guests should be prepared for a primitive experience and plan their resources accordingly. The following services are provided on-site or through local partnerships:

What is worth choosing about Charlestown Breachway is the rare opportunity to live right on the edge of the Atlantic Ocean at a relatively low cost. For many Rhode Islanders, this is the ultimate "unplugged" vacation. While the lack of hookups might be a deterrent for some, it is exactly what draws the core demographic of campers who want to escape the over-commercialization of modern RV resorts. You are choosing a location where the primary entertainment is the tide coming in and out, the call of the gulls, and the thrill of a fish on the line.
The "Breachway" experience is also worth choosing for its unmatched access to Ninigret Pond, a saltwater lagoon that is perfect for children to explore safely in calmer waters. It provides a unique balance where you can have the surf of the ocean on one side and the tranquility of the pond on the other. For those who own a self-contained rig and value a spectacular view over luxury amenities, Charlestown Breachway offers a sense of freedom and a connection to the sea that is difficult to find anywhere else in the Northeast. It is a place where memories are made through simple pleasures: a successful day of fishing, a family picnic on the sand, and falling asleep to the sound of the ocean.

Customer Reviews
Great campground. Kid-friendly with an awesome view. The boat access is very accessible.Nice staff.Downsides: no hookups or water to fill tanks. You have to get water at Burlingham campground, 10 minutes away.
Was disappointed when first pulled in since you don't have water view for most sites. The last mile plus in is really rough since you're driving on sand packed road. But once set up I enjoyed it cause it's a short distance to walk the beach. Beach is nice and quiet. Had group of musicians close by but loved their music and the campground staff enforced quiet hours. The sites are close but I've had much worse. I would stay again with low costs. No amenities but location makes up for it.
This beach holds a special place in my heart...Best beach it's so clean blue water. It's just very beautiful at the breachway.
Beautiful Charelstown beach but no changing rooms or showers other than the outdoor one It is a bit of a walk from the parking lot to the beach with beach gear Suggest bring a big wagon to load all the gear
It is the ocean beach and area around it is gorgeous. Several good restaurants in the area too.
