Crystal Grove Diamond Mine & Campground Introduce
Crystal Grove Diamond Mine & Campground offers a truly unique outdoor experience that combines the traditional joys of camping with the thrill of geological discovery. Located in the picturesque Mohawk Valley of New York, this destination is world-renowned for its "Herkimer Diamonds"—beautiful, double-terminated quartz crystals that are found only in specific regions of Upstate New York. Established as a family-friendly retreat, Crystal Grove provides a serene environment where visitors of all ages can try their hand at mining while enjoying the peaceful ambiance of a well-maintained campground tucked under a canopy of lush hardwoods.
The community at Crystal Grove is known for its friendly and welcoming atmosphere, drawing in both seasoned "rock hounds" and families looking for a novel vacation idea. The property spans a significant area that includes multiple mining sites, a variety of camping accommodations, and a charming gift shop. For many New York residents, a trip to the "Grove" is a rite of passage, offering a chance to disconnect from the digital world and engage in a hands-on activity that is both educational and rewarding. Whether you are looking for a weekend of intensive digging or a quiet place to relax by a campfire, this campground provides a versatile backdrop for your next Upstate adventure.
Location and accessibility are key factors that make Crystal Grove Diamond Mine & Campground a popular choice for regional travelers. It is situated at 161 Co Rd 114, St. Johnsville, NY 13452, USA. This central location in the Leatherstocking Region puts it within easy reach of major New York cities. It is approximately 40 minutes from Utica, an hour from Albany, and just under an hour and a half from Syracuse. The campground is easily reached via the New York State Thruway (I-90), making it a convenient stop for those traveling across the state. The final leg of the journey takes visitors through scenic backroads that showcase the rolling hills and agricultural beauty of Montgomery County.
Once on-site, the campground is designed to be navigable for all types of travelers. The entrance and primary parking areas are wheelchair accessible, ensuring that everyone can reach the main office and camp store. While the mining areas themselves are rugged and natural—which may present challenges for those with mobility issues—the campground portion is relatively level and easy to traverse. The proximity to the village of St. Johnsville means that essential services, local eateries, and additional historical sites like the Erie Canal locks are just a few miles away, providing a perfect balance between a secluded woods experience and modern convenience.

What is worth choosing about Crystal Grove Diamond Mine & Campground is the sheer value and unique character of the experience. Unlike many commercialized tourist attractions, the mining here is authentic and requires real effort, making every find feel like a personal triumph. For the price of a modest admission fee, you get a full day of activity that captures the imagination of children and adults alike. The "treasure hunt" aspect of the mines ensures that no two visits are ever the same, as shifting earth and new excavations constantly reveal different types of crystals and minerals.
Furthermore, the campground itself is prized for its "old-school" charm. The sites are shaded by mature trees and offer a level of privacy and quiet that is becoming increasingly hard to find. Choosing Crystal Grove means choosing a vacation where you can actually hear the wind in the trees and the water in the creek. The rustic cabins are a particularly good choice for those who want the camping vibe without the hassle of setting up a tent. With its blend of geological adventure, friendly service, and natural beauty, Crystal Grove Diamond Mine & Campground remains a premier destination for anyone looking to experience the hidden gems of New York State.

We really enjoyed camping and mining here. It's small quaint and everyone was extremely happy and friendly, both staff and fellow campers. We yielded so many crystals, the kids never got bored. The event they held had many vendors and was well planned. Great experience!
The cabins are so cute and I had such an amazing time with my trip here! The mines are also very nice and we found some very cute crystals on matrix and some water clear gemmy ones! The gift shop area is also very clean and cute. Amazing experience for the price! The bathrooms could use some extra love but aside from that I have zero complaints!
Wonderful place to camp! Our tent site was right on the creek and it was just beautiful scenery! If you stay at the campsite, they give you early access to the mine as well! The shop at the campground was very affordable. They have WiFi at the camp store for those who need it. Rest of the area had 0 connection (which is completely normal for a campground)! At the mine we found many awesome Herkimer Diamonds!Only downside was you had to pay a quarter machine for the shower, there was only 1 women’s shower (not sure if they had 1 or 2 men’s) as well.I definitely recommend this campground & mine. Such a peaceful, beautiful stay!
Visited with Scout Troop Oreland 1. It was the perfect outing for camping and for fulfilling a requirement toward the Geology Merit Badge. This is a great trip to take with kids, but it's also a trip to take with friends.Kudos to the staff, who are friendly, knowledgeable, and accessible.Shout out to Pat whose enthusiasm for geology and nature's wonders is sincere and contagious.
Wonderful place! Staff are very friendly and helpful! We decided to take my daughter (11) mining since she loves collecting crystals and we enjoy it ourselves , The grove dose not disappoint, we have been twice now and enjoyed our day , it’s really cool to see your kids head pop out of a dirt hole giddy at her finds.I will say though I wouldn’t advise this for littles, expect them to get bored fast if they can’t chill in one place and dig in dirt for a good amount of time, however you can walk nature trails, ride bikes and camp (very clean grounds) and close to other outdoor activities in the area.
