Royal Mountain Campground Introduce

Royal Mountain Campground serves as a premier outdoor destination for residents and travelers in the New York region looking to experience the natural beauty of the Adirondack foothills. Located in Johnstown, this family-owned and operated facility is situated at the base of Royal Mountain, offering a picturesque backdrop for a variety of camping styles. The campground prides itself on a "Happy Camper" philosophy, maintaining a meticulously clean and friendly environment that caters to both seasonal regulars and weekend warriors. Whether you are looking for a rugged tent experience or a luxury cabin stay, this park provides a sense of community and relaxation that is rare to find in larger commercial venues.

The park is well-integrated into the local culture of Fulton County, often serving as a hub for both campers and locals who visit for the famous on-site treats. The atmosphere is quiet and respectful, making it an ideal choice for families with children or pet owners who value a peaceful night under the stars. With a mix of wooded sites and open waterfront vistas, the property allows guests to tailor their experience—from social evenings by a community fire pit to secluded mornings watching the mist rise off the stocked fishing pond.

Location and accessibility are standout features for Royal Mountain Campground, making it a convenient getaway for New Yorkers. Positioned at 4948 NY-29 in Johnstown, the park is easily reached via major thoroughfares. For those traveling from the New York State Thruway (I-90), the campground is a straightforward drive from Exit 28 (Fonda-Fultonville) or Exit 29 (Canajoharie). Its central location puts it within an hour's drive of Albany and Utica, and just over an hour from Glens Falls, making it a perfect basecamp for exploring the wider Adirondack Park and the Great Sacandaga Lake area.

The campground’s infrastructure is designed with accessibility in mind, ensuring all guests can enjoy the facilities. The entrance, parking areas, and main bathhouse are all wheelchair accessible. Navigating the park is easy for large RV rigs, with well-maintained gravel roads and plenty of space for maneuvering. Its proximity to local attractions such as the Royal Mountain Ski Area (just five minutes away) and several historical museums in Johnstown ensures that visitors have plenty of options for day trips while staying at a facility that remains easy to find and enter.

Royal Mountain Campground offers a comprehensive range of services designed to provide a "home away from home" experience. The management focuses on both utility and comfort, offering the following onsite services:

  • Full RV hookups including 30-amp and 50-amp electrical service and water connections.
  • A convenient sanitary dump station accessible for large motorhomes and trailers.
  • Onsite RV parts and minor repair services to help travelers handle unexpected maintenance.
  • Propane refilling station available for tanks and motorhomes.
  • Granny’s Ice Cream Shanty, an onsite eatery serving premium hard and soft serve ice cream, hot dogs, and snacks.

When considering where to spend your vacation in Upstate New York, Royal Mountain Campground is worth choosing for its unique blend of Adirondack charm and modern convenience. One of the most compelling reasons to choose this park is the exceptional hospitality; the owners are known for their hands-on approach, often personally assisting with site setups or inviting guest children to community birthday celebrations. This level of personal care transforms a simple overnight stay into a meaningful family experience.

Furthermore, the presence of Granny’s Ice Cream Shanty right at the entrance makes it a local landmark. There is nothing quite like ending a day of hiking or fishing with a locally-loved sundae without ever having to leave the property. For RV owners, the availability of 50-amp service and onsite RV parts provides a level of technical support that is often missing from more rustic camps. If you are looking for a safe, quiet, and impeccably clean campground that puts you at the crossroads of New York history and Adirondack adventure, Royal Mountain Campground is an unbeatable choice.

Great little campground near many area attractions. We stayed here for both 4th of July and labor day weekends, both times the campground was very clean. We really enjoy site 16 as it is in between majority of the seasonal campers, our dogs enjoyed the peace and quiet of it!

Cute spot! Owners were very friendly. Invited our niece to join their kids birthday party and even left us cupcakes. We had a great time and would definitely go back.

We spent 4 nights at Royal Mountain Campground and loved it!! It is relatively quiet (especially during the week), and the owners are super nice. The bathrooms and showers were very clean every day. The ice cream shack was just the cherry on top! It is centrally located to many fun things to do (bike, hike, visit museums and historical farms, drive into Albany, etc.).

The extras at this campground are what make it stand out. Ice cream, food, RV’s to rent, cabins, etc. It’s like an all inclusive resort. But when we stayed there were a lot of barking dogs all day and loud groups of people around fires at night. You can tell this is the kind of place that has season long “regulars” and they act like the usual campground curtesy rules don’t apply to them.

It was a very nice, quiet and clean Campground. It was so great to have a clean shower after a long day and the ice cream was delicious too.
