Herkimer Diamond KOA Resort Introduce
For New Yorkers seeking a vacation that blends outdoor adventure with a touch of geological wonder, the Herkimer Diamond KOA Resort stands as a quintessential destination in the Mohawk Valley. This award-winning campground is not just a place to pitch a tent; it is a full-scale resort experience designed to immerse visitors in the natural beauty of Central New York. Situated directly across from the world-famous Herkimer Diamond Mines, the resort provides a rare opportunity for guests to prospect for their own quartz crystals by day and relax by a riverside campfire by night. Its reputation as a "destination" KOA makes it a popular choice for local families, rockhounds, and travelers exploring the corridor between the Adirondacks and the Catskills.
The resort’s atmosphere is one of active engagement and family-oriented fun. During the peak summer season, the grounds buzz with energy as children head to the playground and tubers prepare to launch into the West Canada Creek. The property is divided to accommodate various camping styles, ranging from rustic forest settings to premium riverside sites. Whether you are an experienced RVer looking for a high-end patio site or a local resident trying "glamping" for the first time in a themed lodge, the resort is structured to provide a professional and hospitable environment. It balances the nostalgia of traditional camping with the modern amenities expected by today’s travelers, including high-speed connectivity and staff-led recreational programming.
Located at 4626 NY-28, Herkimer, NY 13350, the resort is exceptionally accessible for residents across New York State. Positioned just seven miles north of the New York State Thruway (I-90) Exit 30, it is a straightforward drive from major hubs like Syracuse, Utica, and Albany. Its location on Route 28 also makes it a natural stopover for those heading into the Adirondack Park. The campground is thoughtfully laid out with paved main roads and clearly marked signage, ensuring that even large rigs can navigate the terrain with confidence. Accessibility is integrated into the resort's infrastructure, featuring wheelchair-accessible parking lots and restroom facilities to ensure a comfortable experience for all guests.
The geography of the site is one of its most compelling features. The resort is nestled along the banks of the West Canada Creek, a pristine waterway known for its trout fishing and gentle currents perfect for tubing. This "lazy river" flow defines the southern boundary of the main camping area, providing both a scenic backdrop and a natural recreational outlet. The proximity to the actual diamond mines—located just across the street—means that guests can walk to one of the region's top attractions without ever having to unhook their vehicle or search for local parking, adding a layer of convenience that is highly valued by the local camping community.
Herkimer Diamond KOA Resort offers a robust selection of onsite services designed to make a multi-day stay both comfortable and entertaining. These services cater to every type of camper, from those in luxury motorhomes to those in simple pop-up tents:
- Full-service RV sites featuring electric and water hookups, with many offering 50-amp service and deluxe patios.
- Onsite retail at the Trading Post, providing groceries, camping supplies, firewood, and unique souvenirs.
- Dining options at the onsite restaurant and snack bar (seasonal), allowing guests to skip meal prep and enjoy local flavors.
- Recreational equipment rentals, including tubes for the West Canada Creek and tools for diamond mining.
- Comprehensive waste management services, including a clean dump station and regular trash collection.

The highlights of this resort extend far beyond standard camping. As a KOA Resort-tier property, it features high-end amenities and unique attractions that distinguish it from smaller local parks. Key features include:

- The West Canada Creek: A beautiful waterway running through the property, ideal for tubing, kayaking, and trout fishing.
- Diverse Lodging Options: Choices ranging from basic camping cabins to luxury "Themed Lodges" like the Astronomy or Tree-House lodges.

What makes the Herkimer Diamond KOA Resort worth choosing is the sheer variety of experiences it packs into a single location. For a New York family, it represents a "one-stop shop" for vacationing; you can mine for gems, float down a river, and stay in a high-tech cabin all on the same property. It is particularly worth choosing for those who value organized activities and a social camping environment. The resort's ability to host events, including weddings and group rallies, speaks to its capacity and professional management. While it is a bustling environment that may occasionally feature the sounds of celebration, the 10:00 PM quiet hours are enforced to ensure that the "middle of the woods" serenity returns each night.
Furthermore, the resort is an excellent choice for those who want a "soft" introduction to the outdoors. The glamping pods and deluxe lodges remove the barriers of traditional camping, providing hot showers, comfortable beds, and climate control. For the serious rockhound, the proximity to the mines is unbeatable, allowing for maximum "dig time" without the logistical hurdles of traveling from an off-site hotel. By combining the thrill of discovery with the comforts of a modern resort, the Herkimer Diamond KOA has cemented its status as a factual and engaging highlight of the New York camping landscape.

Be prepared to listen to pounding bass music until quiet hours start, I was in a camper and could clearly hear every note. Forget about sitting by the fire, and I can’t imagine how it is for tent campers. The owners should inform campers at the time of booking if there’s also a wedding booked, or at least that there’s a chance a wedding will occur during their stay. The owners obviously choose not to inform paying guests who are camping because they can get away with it - By the time you find out there’s a wedding, you’ve already paid and aren’t going to leave in the middle of the night.I requested a refund for the night of the wedding which was denied by management, however I was able to succesfullly charge back the night in question and would encourage other campers to do the same if this happens to them.
Rented a glamping pod (in what I new realize is the off season). Store/office is closed by 5 post season-which makes it a challenge to get things you need (firewood) if you are off site for the day. While its lovely its in the middle of the woods, truly... it presents the added challenge of not being able to get things you need locally.I was on the mountain side so never really explored the main campground as I was off site during daylight hours.Glamping pod is as described-small but functional. It would be tight for 2 people but worked for me (solo). Wish they'd add more hooks in the pod. Water was nice and hot for shower 👍👍
We didn't stay over night but we did mine and shop at the store. The whole resort was well laid out and clean. Our experience mining was wonderful and I also bought my gal a nice diamond ring a bracelet for a great price.
We like to camp in our RV here along with our cats. We were supposed to camp in early October but one of our cars needed surgery and had to wear that cone of shame. That being said we couldn't go when we planned. However we did not want to canel and Gloria at the reservation desk was able to push us out 2 weeks. She and all the staff associated with KDM KOA were simply wonderful people to deal with. We would have taken up their offer of 15% off our next reservation but we just dont have a time in mind for next year. We will be back!
My favorite camping spot. Everyone is super friendly. The staff really try to help improve my experience. I've stayed many times, in tents and cabins. I've never had an issue with staff or another guest. So beautiful and peaceful. Very clean facilities and grounds.
