Historic Camping at The Campground at Bethel Woods Introduce
For music lovers and history enthusiasts across the New York region, few places carry the weight and wonder of Bethel Woods. Historic Camping at The Campground at Bethel Woods offers a rare opportunity to stay on the hallowed grounds of the 1969 Woodstock festival. Located in Swan Lake, New York, this campground serves as an extension of the Bethel Woods Center for the Arts, allowing concertgoers to bypass the late-night drive home and instead immerse themselves in the peaceful, rolling hills of the Sullivan Catskills. This experience blends the nostalgia of the past with modern professional management, ensuring that every guest can enjoy the "peace and music" legacy in comfort and safety.
Staying at this historic site is more than just a convenient lodging choice; it is a way to connect with the cultural fabric of New York. The campground is divided into distinct areas to cater to different camping styles, with "Historic Camping" being located on Best Road, right across from the Pavilion area. From this vantage point, campers are treated to majestic views of the Bethel Woods campus and the very fields that once hosted half a million people. The atmosphere is friendly and vibrant, especially during show weekends, creating a community of fans who share a deep appreciation for the arts and the outdoors. Whether you are a local New Yorker revisiting a favorite haunt or a first-time visitor to the Catskills, the campground provides a professional and welcoming home base.
Location and accessibility are primary benefits for those choosing Historic Camping. Situated at 100 Best Rd, Swan Lake, NY 12783, the campground is approximately 90 miles northwest of New York City, making it an easy and scenic drive for a weekend getaway. One of the most significant perks is the proximity to the Pavilion Stage amphitheater and the award-winning Museum at Bethel Woods. While the walk is manageable for many, the campground provides a complimentary shuttle—often affectionately referred to as the "Hippie Bus"—to transport guests to the concert entrance, ensuring that accessibility is never an issue even for those with sites further from the venue gates.

What is worth choosing at Historic Camping at The Campground at Bethel Woods? For the local New York traveler, the primary value is the "stay and play" convenience. Driving home through the winding roads of the Catskills after a high-energy concert can be exhausting; choosing to camp allows you to extend the magic of the evening under the stars. The ability to wake up and walk to the museum or grab breakfast at the on-site cafe before heading home adds a layer of relaxation to the concert experience that traditional hotels cannot provide.
Furthermore, the campground is worth choosing for its historical significance and pristine environment. Unlike many high-traffic public campgrounds, this facility is curated to honor the legacy of the Woodstock festival. The "Hippie Bus" shuttle, the communal fire pits, and the shared excitement of the concert crowd create a unique social atmosphere that is both nostalgic and modern. With super-clean facilities and plenty of space to breathe, Historic Camping at Bethel Woods stands as a top-tier choice for those who want their outdoor adventure to be as legendary as the music on the stage. It is an essential New York experience that perfectly captures the spirit of the Sullivan Catskills.

Lovely campground. Pavilion camping was worth the price to be so close to venue. You’re supposed to move your car after you unpack but some folks left their cars in campsite. Bathrooms and showers were clean and plentiful but a bit of a walk from our site. If you arrive early like we did, it’s a long walk to museum because the concert area is fenced off and closed, so you have to circumnavigate. There were shuttles but a bit of a wait.
Our first time car camping for a concert here. Booking and site selection was easy (though the interactive map could be a bit bigger to select a site). We checked in quickly and were guided to our camp site. Ample space, several drinking water stations, view of the Bethel Woods concert site on the opposite hill. There’s a spot for breakfast/ lunch on site plus a little convenience/ gift shop. Super clean bathrooms, toilets and showers, camp fire and chairs / Picknick tables in distance so not to disturb at night. Fun shuttle and separate entrance / exit to concert event site. Highly recommend this over driving home late at night. Will come back for the next concert.
This was our first time “Car Camping “ at BW and it was absolutely fabulous. The price is great ( you get a 30’x30’ space ) our tent and vehicle fit perfectly. The location is perfect, a short distance from the venue, we could see the venue from our campsite. There are so many positives: All our “neighbors campers” were friendly and cheerful, there are 2 gas fire pits to gather around, there is a shuttle to get you back and forth from the venue, restrooms/ showers were spotless, there is even a Cell Phone Charging Station!! Groovy Grub located on the campground for great breakfast and lunch/ dinner options ( check the hours so you can plan accordingly) and also Groovy Goods for camping staples and gifts. But most of all we want to give a big shout out to the staff. Everyone was so kind, knowledgeable, helpful and welcoming. The crew that greeted us upon arrival, shuttle drivers, the chefs at Groovy Grub, the box office, security who made us safe, the security gentleman who gave me a ride back to our campsite after the Neil Young concert and Bill ( Security) who helped when the battery in our vehicle died today! Note: There were a few fellow campers who stopped by to try and help, we say Thank You.We will most definitely be back, even if it’s not for a concert.Thank you one and all for a wonderful time!My husband, Paul myself and our son Dylan highly recommended staying here. Get back in touch with good vibes 😎
The "historic" Bethel Woods campground is huge and beautiful. You can watch the sunrise on one side and the sunset on another. 24 hour security, which is completely unobtrusive, made me feel much better about sleeping there on a night when there was no show. The campground is much more crowded when there is a show at the (formerly Woodstock Festival) venue next door. The campground is very expensive to sleep in your car - even more expensive if you try their higher end options! But car campers have well-lit, VERY clean, private toilet/shower rooms and friendly staff, and it is amazingly peaceful. I loved it here!
Car Camping at Historic Campsite Bethel Woods is the way to go!Van camping for us - makes the whole concert experience so much easier and more fun. You can chill at the campsite or fire pits to chat to fellow campers, before the show, then hop on the “magic bus” that runs every 30 minutes (and even passes by the historic concert site). The shuttle drops you right at a convenient shuttle only location and picks you up afterward, so there’s no stress about parking, long lines, or late-night driving.Pro tip: rent your lawn chairs online! The pickup line is way shorter, which means more time to grab a snack, enjoy a drink, and scout out that perfect sunny spot on the lawn before the crowds roll in.The ride back is just as entertaining—and best of all, you completely avoid long exit lines or needing a designated driver. The campsite itself is super clean and well set up: restrooms, showers, picnic tables, charcoal grills, and even gas fire pits where you can hang out and meet fellow concert-goers afterwards to share experiences. Definitely worth the price for the convenience, vibe, and overall experience!
