Kelly Pines Equestrian Campground Introduce
For those living in Pennsylvania who share a passion for the bond between horse and rider, Kelly Pines Equestrian Campground represents a historic and vital piece of the state's outdoor heritage. Established in 1928, it holds the distinction of being the first recorded recreation site in the Allegheny National Forest. Today, it serves as the central hub for the expansive 38-mile Spring Creek Horse Trail system. Nestled in a spacious opening along Wolf Run—a native trout stream—this campground is shaded by ancient white pines, some over 300 years old. It offers a primitive, immersive experience that allows Pennsylvanians to disconnect from the modern world and reconnect with the rugged beauty of the northern tier.
The atmosphere at Kelly Pines is one of quiet camaraderie among horse enthusiasts. Unlike more commercialized campgrounds, the focus here is on the relationship with nature and the equine companions brought along for the journey. While the site is officially designated as an equestrian campground, it remains inclusive of all outdoor lovers, offering a select number of sites specifically for those without horses. Whether you are saddling up for a multi-day trek or simply pitching a tent to enjoy the sounds of the stream, Kelly Pines provides a level of serenity that is synonymous with the Pennsylvania Wilds. It is a place where the morning air is crisp, the trails are challenging, and the history of the forest is felt in every towering tree.
Location and accessibility are important factors for visitors to consider, as the remote nature of Kelly Pines is both its greatest appeal and its most significant challenge. Located near Marienville, PA, in the Marienville Ranger District, the campground is deep within the forest. Local users are advised to be cautious with navigation; following standard GPS directions can often lead travelers down unsuitable routes like Goat Road. Instead, the most reliable path from Marienville is to take Forest Road (FR) 130 to FR 131 North at Lamonville. Travelers coming from Kane or Ridgway should take State Route 66 to FR 124 (Duhring Road) at Pigeon, then follow the signs toward the Marienville Gun Club. Accessing the park requires crossing a bridge preceded by a sharp turn; while rigs up to 46-50 feet have successfully navigated this entry, those with larger trailers should exercise extreme caution. There is no winter maintenance on the access roads, making this a strictly seasonal destination for most.
Services offered at Kelly Pines Equestrian Campground are designed to support a self-sufficient camping experience while providing the unique infrastructure necessary for horses. These include:
- Four specialized equestrian campsites, each equipped with a four-stall tie-down shed to keep horses secure and sheltered.
- One double-occupancy campsite (Site 3) featuring two four-stall sheds, perfect for larger groups or families traveling together.
- Two regular campsites (Sites 1 and 2) reserved for non-equestrian campers who wish to enjoy the forest.
- Potable drinking water available through an on-site artisan well and a hand pump.
- Vault toilet facilities located centrally within the campground loop for all guests.
- Dedicated manure bins for the proper disposal of horse waste, helping to keep the environment pristine.
- A designated watering location along the stream specifically for hydrating horses.
- Self-pay station facilities for on-site registration, with fees typically ranging from $15 to $25 per night.
The features and highlights of Kelly Pines make it a standout for anyone seeking a true wilderness adventure in Pennsylvania. The proximity to water and the layout of the trails provide a well-rounded outdoor itinerary. Highlights include:
- Direct access to the Spring Creek Horse Trail system, featuring 38 miles of marked, sustainable trails ranging from hilly terrain to scenic loops.
- A dog-friendly environment where leashed pets are welcome, though owners are warned to be mindful of the local rattlesnake habitat.
- Prime fishing opportunities along Wolf Run and Spring Creek, which are popular spots for local anglers during trout season.
- Day-use parking area in the center of the campground loop, allowing local riders to stage their rides without staying overnight.
- Native forest vegetation and 300-year-old white pines that provide significant shade and a majestic canopy over the campsites.
- Picnic tables and fire rings at every site, essential for the classic Pennsylvania campfire experience.
- Kid-friendly hiking opportunities, allowing families to explore the gentle sections of the forest together.
- Remote "off-grid" living, providing a complete break from cellular service and digital distractions.
For those looking to secure a spot or gain more information, the primary contact for this federal site is the Marienville Ranger District Office. You can reach them at (814) 927-6628 during their standard business hours of 8:30 am to 4:00 pm on weekdays. For official site management or reservation-specific questions, travelers may also call the Allegheny Site Management at (814) 368-4158. The campground is located at Marienville, PA 16239, USA. Reservations are highly encouraged for the double site and equestrian stalls, especially during the peak riding season from mid-May through late October, and can typically be made through the Recreation.gov system.
What is worth choosing about Kelly Pines Equestrian Campground is the authenticity of the experience. In a world of modern "glamping," Kelly Pines remains true to the roots of the Allegheny National Forest. Choosing this site means choosing to be a part of a tradition that dates back nearly a century. For the equestrian community, the convenience of having four-stall tie-down sheds directly at your campsite is a luxury that few other primitive sites can match. The sustainability of the Spring Creek Horse Trail means that your ride today helps preserve the forest for riders decades from now. Furthermore, the $15 per night fee for a single site offers an incredibly affordable way for Pennsylvania families to enjoy their public lands.
Additionally, the location serves as a perfect test of one’s outdoor skills. Because the area is remote and a known habitat for local wildlife like timber rattlesnakes, it encourages a "leave no trace" ethic and a heightened sense of awareness that seasoned campers value. Whether you are navigating the hilly terrain on horseback or enjoying a quiet morning by the creek with your dog, the sense of accomplishment that comes from a stay at Kelly Pines is unmatched. It is more than just a place to sleep; it is a destination that demands respect for the wilderness and rewards visitors with some of the most beautiful vistas in the state.

Park is very nice, this is a rattlesnake habitat and do NOT bring your dog, move carefully on the trails. Bring a snake bite kit because this place is very remote. Trails are beautiful and very hilly. There is a sharp turn into the camp and a bridge. Lots of online chatter about how big your rig can be to get into the park. Do not worry about it. If you had a 30-40 foot trailer, you will have no issues getting into the campground. My friend hooked up including her truck was at 46' and had no issues making the turn. The park is VERY hard to find. Do NOT follow the Google directions, instead, look for the Marienville Gun Club or the Summers Camp signs off of Route 66 and go into the campsite passing the gun club and you won't get lost. Do NOT go down Goat Road. Campsite 4 is the only double campsite, it is next to a creek and is shady. Campsite 3 is also very lovely. All the sites are nice, but campsites 3 and 4 are the best ones.
Been coming here since 75... the place looks great.. 15 per night for non equestrian sites.
I've been coming here for over 30+ years, way before it was an equestrian park! Most of the Equestrian people are nice but you get a few who think they are better than you but we just ignore them! We love Kelly Pines and the Allegheny National Park!
The outhouse was almost full and the snakes needed removed from it. Need to have stone there for the horse area after cleaning up and the manure pit was about full. Also, a dumpster would be great for trash. I mean, after all if we pay we need it to be clean
I would just like to say my wife and I and sometime my daughter and granddaughter would from since 1999 and up till 2015 have enjoyed Kelly Pine it’s been a highlight of our life spending time with good friends in the outdoors and horses due to an auto accident we’re not able to go anymore but we have the memories thank you
