Lake George Battleground State Campground Introduce

For New Yorkers seeking a camping experience that blends the tranquility of the Adirondack wilderness with the vibrant energy of a world-class resort town, Lake George Battleground State Campground offers a unique and compelling choice. Located at the southern gateway to the Adirondack Park, this facility is managed by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC). It serves not only as a place for outdoor recreation but also as a living museum of American history. The grounds themselves are steeped in the legacy of the Colonial period, having served as a strategic military site during the French and Indian War and the American Revolution. Today, the rustle of leaves and the sounds of nearby Lake George Village have replaced the echoes of battle, providing a serene backdrop for modern adventurers.

What distinguishes this campground from many others in the state system is its unparalleled proximity to the local culture of Lake George. While many Adirondack sites require miles of driving to reach a grocery store or restaurant, Battleground is located within easy walking distance of the village's famous strip. This "best of both worlds" location allows guests to spend their mornings hiking or exploring military ruins and their evenings enjoying the dining, shopping, and entertainment that define the region. For families and history buffs alike, it provides an accessible entry point into the great outdoors without sacrificing the conveniences that make a vacation comfortable.

Location and accessibility are the primary reasons many regional travelers return to this site year after year. Situated at 2224 US-9, Lake George, NY 12845, the campground is easily reached via the Adirondack Northway (I-87) at Exit 21. Its position just a quarter-mile south of the Village of Lake George makes it one of the most accessible state-run facilities in the region. The park is designed to welcome a wide variety of visitors, featuring a wheelchair-accessible entrance, accessible parking lots, and modified restroom facilities to ensure that everyone can enjoy the natural and historic beauty of the site.

Accessibility also extends to the surrounding attractions. The campground is located directly across from the entrance to the Prospect Mountain Memorial Highway and is a short walk from the famous "Million Dollar Beach." This makes it an ideal home base for those who prefer to leave their vehicle at their site and explore on foot or by bicycle. Whether you are coming from the capital region or making the trek from the city, the straightforward navigation and central location make it a hassle-free destination for a weekend getaway or an extended summer stay.

The services offered at Lake George Battleground State Campground are designed to provide a classic, "no-frills" camping experience while ensuring essential comforts are met. The park focuses on maintaining a clean and safe environment where the natural landscape remains the star of the show. Staffed by dedicated DEC personnel, the campground provides professional oversight and assistance to ensure that all guests follow the park's "Forever Wild" principles.

  • Provision of 68 well-shaded campsites suitable for both traditional tent camping and smaller RV units.
  • Access to a centrally located "comfort station" featuring flush toilets and hot showers for all registered guests.
  • Dedicated RV services including a trailer dump station and water fill-up stations near the campground entrance.
  • A recycling center and waste management facilities to encourage environmentally responsible camping practices.
  • Professional check-in services at the entrance booth, providing maps, local information, and safety guidelines.
  • Regular patrols by park rangers to ensure a safe environment and the enforcement of quiet hours between 10 p.m. and 7 a.m.
  • Official "Path Through History" interpretive services, including a self-guided trail through the adjacent Battlefield Park.

The features and highlights of this campground are deeply tied to its geography and history. Beyond the campsites themselves, the property offers a variety of ways to engage with the landscape. From the massive old-growth trees that provide a canopy of shade to the nearby historical statues and ruins, the park invites exploration at every turn.

  • Direct access to the Lake George Battlefield Park, a 35-acre historic site featuring statues of General William Johnson and King Hendrick.
  • Proximity to the Million Dollar Beach, where campers can enjoy swimming, sunbathing, and public boat launches on the "Queen of American Lakes."
  • Hiking opportunities on the Prospect Mountain Trail, which offers a challenging 1.5-mile climb to panoramic views of five states and Canada.
  • A dog-friendly environment that allows New Yorkers to bring their pets along, provided they have proof of a valid rabies vaccination.
  • Designated picnic areas equipped with tables and charcoal grills for day-use or family gatherings.
  • Easy access to the Warren County Bikeway, a paved path that connects Lake George to Glens Falls, perfect for cycling enthusiasts.
  • Kid-friendly atmosphere with educational interpretive paths that make learning about colonial history interactive and fun.

For those interested in booking a stay, it is important to note that reservations are highly encouraged, particularly during the peak summer months and major event weekends like Americade or the Adirondack Nationals Car Show. Reservations can be made through the official New York State camping website or by calling the campground office directly during the operating season, which typically runs from mid-May through Columbus Day.

When considering the many lodging options in Warren County, what is worth choosing Lake George Battleground State Campground is the unique combination of affordability and location. For the price of a standard camping fee, you gain a front-row seat to one of the most famous lakes in the world. While commercial RV parks nearby offer more amenities like pools and playgrounds, Battleground offers an authentic connection to the Adirondack forest and the state's military history. It is a place where you can sit by a campfire at night and hear the distant sounds of the village, yet feel entirely removed from the daily grind.

Furthermore, this campground is worth choosing because of the independence it affords. The ability to walk to dinner or a fireworks show and then return to a quiet, wooded site is a rare luxury. For New Yorkers who value the history of their state, staying on the very grounds where colonial soldiers once stood adds a layer of depth to the vacation experience. It is a destination that rewards the curious and the active, serving as a gateway to the broader Adirondack Wild Forest. Whether you are looking to conquer the heights of Prospect Mountain or simply relax with a book under the hemlocks, Lake George Battleground provides a dependable and historic setting for your next adventure.

For the three days my family have booked and planned to stay at this campground, we only lasted one day, as our experience here was pretty bad, my only positive about this place is ease of access to town and Lake George itself. The "campgrounds" did not really feel like campgrounds as you were right next to other people, and our campsite did not come with any picnic tables like the other sites next to us did, we complained about it with the staff, and although friendly, we had to get the table ourself from a neighboring empty lot. From our arrival to the next morning, my family and I were just restless from the conditions, and so decided we would leave that morning. At least we also had a well kept comfort station nearby, however that was littered with so many bugs, especially in the shower rooms, every side of the wall had bugs on it, enough to creep me out. We may have just gotten unlucky with what we had to deal with and should try finding another lot in the campground to stay at, and maybe I will leave a more positive review, but as of right now, that experience was horrible for us.

We had a very upsetting experience at this campsite. Our group came with multiple families, paid the full $60 per person fee, and set up our tents. We understand that we received noise complaints and we were doing our best to quiet down. However, when the owners came to speak to us, instead of addressing the situation professionally, they repeatedly told our group to “shut up” (about 5–7 times) without letting us explain that we were already settling down for the night. That kind of language was extremely disrespectful. It shouldn’t matter whether we were paying customers or not—no one deserves to be spoken to in that way. Because of how we were treated, we decided not to stay the night. When we told the owners we wouldn’t be coming back, their response was something along the lines of, “Good, we don’t want you back.”We left feeling completely disrespected and unwelcome. At the very least, customers deserve to be spoken to with professionalism and courtesy. We believe that a refund, an apology, or at the very least, a partial refund is appropriate for the situation, as we did not even end up staying the night.

The location of this campground was the best thing going for it: it's within walking distance to the beach and the Village, and there are a lot or nearby attractions. The bathrooms were a;sp kept reasonably clean, especially the main one with the showers. About half of the fire pits at the campsites did not have any grates (see picture), so they are OK for a fire, but useless to cook with.Unfortunately, due to proximity to the road, it was very noisy, even at late hours of the night. The camping spaces are also very close to one another, especially the ones at the front loop, which exacerbated the noise from neighboring tents (such as the one next to ours who chatted and joked around at 3 AM, and prevented my family and I to get restful sleep); this in turn contributed to our decision to cut our stay short and check out early.

The woman Heidi that assists in registration is great. She assisted me and my husband in choosing a site we would like and it was awesome. We spent 3 days and the following week returned to the same site. Thank you Heidi, this is the other Heidi.

I was here camping 2 days ago on August 20th when a group of people nearby got three complaints from some other people saying that they were too loud just because they were laughing and talking, having a good time. Then at the third compliant (they were just making their beds), the owner came over to them and cursed them out and told them to shut up, and the family left. And they spent over $300 and didn’t get a refund!!! This is ridiculous and no one should be treated like that
