Letchworth D Cabins Introduce
For New York residents seeking a departure from the bustling crowds of typical vacation spots, Letchworth D Cabins offers a uniquely serene retreat. Located within the world-renowned Letchworth State Park, often hailed as the "Grand Canyon of the East," the D Cabin loop provides a more secluded and intimate way to experience the park’s natural splendor. Unlike the more frequented western side of the Genesee River gorge, the D Cabins are situated on the quieter eastern side near the historic Parade Grounds. This area is perfect for those who appreciate the rustic charm of a "log cabin tent" experience—providing a solid roof and basic electricity while keeping you deeply connected to the sounds and rhythms of the forest.
The D Cabin area is specifically designed for campers who want to elevate their experience without moving into the realm of luxury "glamping." These cabins serve as a sturdy home base for exploring the 14,000-plus acres of the park. The atmosphere in this loop is notably peaceful, with many sites tucked away from major thoroughfares, allowing for better wildlife viewing and quieter evenings by the fire. Whether you are a couple seeking a cozy two-person cabin or a family looking for a rustic multi-person setup, these accommodations provide a sense of history and simplicity that has become a hallmark of the New York State Park system.
Location and accessibility are important considerations for those visiting this specific section of the park. Letchworth D Cabins are located in Hunt, NY 14846, accessible via the Parade Grounds Entrance off New York State Route 436. It is vital for travelers to note that this is the east side of the gorge; if you enter through the more common west-side gates like Castile or Mt. Morris, you will have to exit the park and drive around the gorge to reach your cabin, as there are no vehicle crossings within the park itself. The check-in process typically takes place at the Visitor Center on the south end, so planning your arrival route is essential. While the cabin interiors are rustic and some sites feature rough terrain that may not be fully accessible, the central restroom and shower facilities in the D loop have been recently renovated and are ADA-compliant.
The services offered at Letchworth D Cabins are tailored toward self-sufficient campers who bring their own linens, cookware, and adventure spirit. The park management ensures that the basic infrastructure is reliable, allowing guests to enjoy the wilderness with a few key modern conveniences. From on-site electricity to the convenience of a small refrigerator, the services focus on enhancing the traditional camping experience rather than replacing it.

The features and highlights of a stay in the D loop center on the unparalleled access to Letchworth’s scenic eastern rim. While the western side of the park holds the famous waterfalls, the eastern side offers the "Parade Grounds" and trails that provide views of the gorge that many visitors never see. The D Cabins are particularly well-suited for families, offering safe spaces for children to explore and proximity to some of the park's best-kept secrets. The integration of the natural landscape into the cabin sites makes every morning feel like an immersion in the woods.
- Direct access to the Hogback Trail and other premier hiking paths on the eastern rim.

What is worth choosing about Letchworth D Cabins is the rare opportunity to stay in a "quiet zone" of one of America's most famous state parks. Choosing the D loop means you value privacy and a genuine connection to the outdoors over the convenience of being next to the main gift shops and restaurants. These cabins are worth choosing specifically for the "log cabin tent" experience—staying dry and warm during heavy rains while still being able to sit outside and listen to the river in the distance. The recent upgrades to the shower and restroom facilities in this area have removed one of the traditional "roughing it" hurdles, making it a much more comfortable choice for families.
Furthermore, the D Cabins provide an excellent value for New York travelers looking for an affordable multi-day stay. By having an on-site fridge and stove, you can significantly reduce vacation costs by preparing your own meals. If you are an avid hiker, the eastern side's trails are often less crowded and offer a more rugged, natural feel than the paved paths near the Upper Falls. For a peaceful, safe, and authentically "upstate" experience, Letchworth D Cabins remain one of the best-kept secrets in the New York State Park system. It is a place where you can find peace, see the deer and raccoons pass by your porch, and enjoy the timeless beauty of the Genesee Valley.

Customer Reviews
There are many cabins at Letchworth Park, and this review only applies to one, cabin D003, a small two-person-log-cabin. The D and E cabins are located on the not so public, much quieter side of the gorge, by the parade grounds. We stayed at the end of September 2020 from Tuesday to Friday morning. We typically tent camp, but I wanted something to get us up off the ground and give us some headroom. So I considered this to be our "log cabin tent." And as you can see, it was only slightly larger then our tent. It came with two cots that could not be put together, so if you are planning on a good time, you better be flexible. The cabin had electricity with plenty of outlets, one overhead light, one porch light, a small electric stove, a fridge, a small table, and two wooden chairs. We had to take out one of the chairs just to get the beds to fit. The site had a fire-ring as apparently fireplaces are out of fashion. There was room for a overhead tarp which we set up to give us more covered outdoor space. The site was very rough and not ADA safe at all. The bathrooms were a treat, very new, with nice showers, and they were ADA compliant so I imagine that some of the cabins are also. The check in is at the Visitors Center. We went nutty trying to figure that out. All in all, it was worth it to rent the cabin. We stayed dry in the heavy overnight rain, if we needed to warm up, we turned on the oven, we didn't need to buy ice for the cooler. And we camp to sit outside by the fire, not sit inside.
Second time staying in D-1. Love the park and the rustic cabin. This cabin is very private and a short walk to the recently renovated restroom/shower facilities which are well maintained. The cabin has an apartment sized electric range and refrigerator. It also has a usable fireplace and electric heat.
Cabins are full of mice. I understand they are rustic but mice walking around in the room is a straight health hazard.I talked to the park manager and she told me D and E cabins are "barely" maintained and it is normal.I will write to Health department about it. Let's see how normal it is.
The cabins are very rustic, the cots are quite uncomfortable. I wasn't expecting glamping, but holy cow, this place is great if you like being in the outdoors. I was disappointed with the bathrooms. It was a brand-new bathroom/shower facility, and despite seeing the guy check the bathrooms almost daily, it only got cleaned once (and they were pretty rough).
Imagine waking up with the sound of the birds and opening the door and watch the deer walking around. This place is beautiful. The waterfalls and hiking trails are awesome. We camp here for 7 days while visiting the area. The restroom is clean and newly constructed. We brought our own beddings. The cabin has refrigarator and stove. If you love the simple outdoor life then this is the place.
