Letchworth State Park D Cabins Introduce

For New York residents looking to experience the "Grand Canyon of the East," the D Cabins at Letchworth State Park offer a unique blend of rustic charm and essential convenience. Located in the southern end of the park, far from the busiest day-use areas, these cabins provide a tranquil home base for those who want to spend their days exploring the dramatic gorge and their nights surrounded by the quiet hum of the forest. As part of a park that consistently ranks as one of the best in the United States, the D Cabin area is specifically known for its proximity to some of the most historic and scenic landmarks on the Genesee River's east side.

The D Cabins cater to a "middle-ground" camping experience. While they are more substantial than a standard tent, they retain a rugged, authentic feel that encourages visitors to disconnect from the modern world. Local New Yorkers often choose this area because it strikes a balance: you have a solid roof, a bed, and basic kitchen facilities, yet you are still very much immersed in the wild character of the park. It is the ideal choice for families with children who want the safety of a cabin but the adventure of a traditional camping trip, or for hikers who need a reliable, dry place to rest after a long day on the trails.

Location and accessibility are two of the primary reasons the D Cabins remain a top choice for regional travelers. Situated at 9280 Parade Grounds Rd in Hunt, NY, this section of the park is accessed via the Portageville/Parade Grounds entrance. This southern location is strategically positioned near the Upper and Middle Falls, providing easy access to the most iconic views in the park. The facility is designed to be inclusive, offering wheelchair-accessible parking lots and entrances, ensuring that the beauty of Letchworth is reachable for all. While the park is vast, the D Cabin loop is relatively self-contained, with well-marked paths leading to central amenities. On-site parking is available directly at the cabins, making it easy to unload gear and supplies for your stay.

The services offered at the D Cabins are focused on providing the "basics of comfort" while maintaining a rustic atmosphere. These cabins generally feature a simple layout, typically consisting of one or more rooms with basic furniture. Unlike the year-round winterized cabins in other areas, the D loop is a seasonal favorite, typically open from early May through mid-October. Management provides the structural necessities, but guests should be prepared to bring their own personal items to make the space feel like home. The area is well-supported by park staff, and the facilities are regularly maintained to ensure a clean and safe environment for all visitors.

  • Rustic lodging with varying room configurations, including some cabins with separate bedrooms.
  • Electric heating in most units to take the edge off cool New York spring and autumn nights.
  • Kitchenettes equipped with a small refrigerator, a stove/oven, and a microwave for meal preparation.
  • Indoor plumbing in many D-series cabins, including hot water showers and flush toilets.
  • Outdoor amenities at each site, including a tall camp grill, a traditional fire pit, and picnic tables.
  • Screened-in porches provided on several models, offering a bug-free space to enjoy the forest air.
  • On-site parking for up to two vehicles per cabin site.
  • Access to public restrooms and running water throughout the cabin loop area.
  • Proximity to the park's central shower facilities, specifically serving as the shower hub for the more remote E Cabin area.

The features and highlights of the D Cabins revolve around the unparalleled natural and historical assets of Letchworth State Park. One of the standout features is the proximity to the Parade Grounds, a historic site that offers expansive green space and unique views of the Genesee River Gorge. For those interested in local history, the William Pryor Letchworth Museum and the grave of Mary Jemison are just a short drive away. Additionally, the southern end of the park is famous for its hot air balloon launches; it is not uncommon for cabin guests to look up and see colorful balloons drifting over the gorge during the early morning hours.

  • Easy access to the Genesee Valley Greenway and over 60 miles of hiking trails.
  • Prime viewing for the Upper and Middle Falls, located just a few miles from the cabin entrance.
  • Frequent wildlife sightings, including white-tailed deer, raccoons, and a variety of native bird species.
  • A quiet, polite community atmosphere encouraged by the park’s layout and family-friendly rules.
  • Safe, kid-friendly environments with plenty of space for supervised outdoor play.
  • Proximity to the Humphrey Nature Center, which offers interactive exhibits about the park's geology.
  • Minimal light pollution, providing excellent opportunities for stargazing on clear nights.

To plan your stay or check for seasonal availability, it is recommended to use the official New York State Parks reservation system. Because Letchworth is a premier destination, cabins—especially those in the D loop—tend to book up quickly during peak summer months and holiday weekends. Having the direct contact information can help with last-minute questions regarding park rules or specific cabin dimensions.

What is worth choosing when it comes to the D Cabins? This area is worth choosing if you value privacy and a "true" woods experience over the high-density environment of the main campground loops. It is worth choosing for the screened-in porches alone, which many veteran campers consider a "luxury" that significantly enhances the experience during the humid New York summers. For those who are new to camping, the D Cabins offer a "safety net"—a secure, dry place to sleep with the convenience of an indoor bathroom, making it much easier to transition into outdoor living.

Furthermore, it is worth choosing for the unique perspective it offers of Letchworth. Staying on the East Side/South End allows you to avoid the heaviest traffic of the Castile and Mount Morris entrances, giving you a more peaceful start to your morning. Just remember to pack your own "comfort kit": while the cabin provides the stove and the beds, you will need to bring your own linens, pillows, coffee maker, and trash cans. By preparing like a local and bringing these small extras, you can transform a simple cabin into a cozy woodland retreat. Whether you are there to witness the roar of the waterfalls or to find a quiet corner to decompress, the D Cabins provide a reliable, affordable, and beautiful setting for your next New York adventure.

The only complaints I have is you need to bring your own trashcans and coffeemaker(not even a complaint I just took it for granted.) Otherwise, this adorable cabin will give you a safe place to bed down when you aren't running around seeing the gorge or the air plane museum. I got to see a hot air balloon for the first time ever, the falls were beautiful and the campground itself was full of polite and friendly people and staff members. You get a tall camp grill and a regular fire pit which is super nice. The screen porch is such a luxury when the bugs start biting. Not sure if all cabins are one bedroom but 006A was. It was such a lovely stay. Excited to return. 🦝

We just spent a weekend in Cabin A5. Included with the cabin was an indoor bathroom with hot water shower and toilet paper but no soap, towels, or trash can. In the kitchen was a microwave, small stove/oven, and refrigerator, and again no trash can. There was a dining table with six chairs and the bedroom had two single beds and a double bunk bed with full size mattresses but no linens, pillows or blankets. I suggest bringing some night lights because it's really dark there. The porch had a picnic table and there was another picnic table outside near the firepit and grill area.

Second year in a row for me in the A Loop at Letchworth! We had cabins A11 and A12. All the cabins in this loop have a shower, toilet, and sink in the bathrooms as well as hot running water in the kitchenettes. Very clean upon arrival. Sleeps six snugly but comfortably. One of our cabins was handicapped accessible inside and out, including a wheelchair friendly fire pit and picnic table. Screened in porches are my favorite part! Each site comes with an outdoor picnic table, a picnic table on the porch and a dining table and 6 chairs on the inside. Our fridge in A11 was the best we've ever had in 6 years of NYS park cabins, 5 at Letchworth itself. Maintenance and Park Ranger/Police presence was perfect. I highly recommend it for families!!! My only regret is I didn't take any photos of the cabins!

Well worth the $$. Shower was small but efficient. Stove, fridge, microwave all new. I like the 2 room setup of B cabins better, but the personal shower trumps that. A great stay, and will return next year.
