Mulehalla Introduce
For Maryland residents and outdoor enthusiasts traveling along the historic C&O Canal, Mulehalla stands as a unique and tranquil destination that captures the essence of Western Maryland’s natural beauty. Located in Williamsport, this 28-acre property—formerly known as McMahon’s Mill—has been transformed into a versatile retreat that balances rustic charm with modern hospitality. Mulehalla is not just a standard campground; it is a storied piece of Washington County history, offering a peaceful alternative to larger, more crowded state facilities. Whether you are a cyclist navigating the towpath or a family looking for a weekend getaway under the stars, Mulehalla provides a serene backdrop for building memories along the Potomac River.
The name "Mulehalla" itself pays homage to the region’s canal history, where mules once pulled barges along the waterway that borders the property. Today, the atmosphere is one of relaxation and recreation. The property features a blend of open fields and shaded woodlands, providing ample space for camping, games, and large gatherings. The management is frequently praised by local visitors for their accommodating and friendly nature, creating an environment that feels more like a private sanctuary than a commercial park. From the historic mill building to the modern amenities, Mulehalla offers a professional yet homey experience for all who visit.
Location and accessibility are among Mulehalla’s strongest assets. Situated at 8031 Avis Mill Road, the campground is remarkably easy to reach from major Maryland arteries like I-81 and I-70, yet it remains tucked away from the noise of the highway. Perhaps its most distinctive feature is its direct access to the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park. Campers can reach the towpath via a short walk, making it a "biker’s den" and a favorite layover for those trekking the 184.5-mile trail between Cumberland and Washington, D.C. Its proximity to the Potomac River also provides opportunities for water-based recreation, ensuring that guests are always just moments away from an adventure.

I came through here with a large group on a charity ride that most of us have been doing for years. When another unnamed nearby campground could no longer accommodate our large group after 30 years of doing so, enter Mulehalla. It was perfect for 150 campers and their bikes and gear! We had a wonderful time and couldn't have felt more welcomed on the property.Thank you for having us and see you next year!
