Pioneer Campground Introduce

Pioneer Campground is a premier outdoor destination nestled in the heart of Pennsylvania’s Endless Mountains. Situated at an elevation of 2,300 feet atop Sonestown Mountain, this campground offers a refreshing escape from the hustle and bustle of modern life. For Pennsylvania residents, especially those traveling from Philadelphia or the Lehigh Valley, it serves as a serene mountain retreat that feels worlds away while remaining remarkably accessible. The property spans 80 acres of lush forest, providing a pristine environment where the focus is on nature, relaxation, and genuine hospitality. Since the current owners took over a few years ago, the campground has earned a reputation for being exceptionally clean, well-maintained, and deeply welcoming to both new visitors and long-time regulars.

The atmosphere at Pioneer Campground is defined by its unspoiled mountain environment and spacious layout. Unlike many commercial parks, the sites here are generously spaced out, allowing families and groups to enjoy their privacy without feeling crowded. The grounds are heavily wooded, offering ample shade and a true "back-to-nature" experience. Whether you are interested in stargazing under some of the darkest skies in the state or waking up to the gentle mountain breezes, this location captures the rustic charm of Sullivan County. It is a place where family traditions are born, whether that involves gathered around a stone-built fire pit or exploring the many scenic vistas that define this unique region of the Commonwealth.

What is Worth Choosing

Choosing Pioneer Campground is particularly worth it for the traveler who values the personal touch of a family-run business. The current owners are frequently praised by guests for their kindness and active involvement in the daily operations of the park. When you stay here, you aren't just a site number; you are a guest in a well-loved mountain home. This level of care is evident in the cleanliness of the facilities and the meticulous maintenance of the landscaping and trails. For those who enjoy the "real" camping experience—where the trees are tall and the nights are quiet—the generously spaced wooded sites here offer a level of seclusion that is increasingly hard to find.

Additionally, the location makes it an unbeatable choice for serious hikers and nature enthusiasts. Being so close to the waterfalls of Worlds End State Park and the rugged terrain of the Loyalsock Trail allows you to maximize your time in nature rather than in your car. Whether you are traveling in a 42-foot RV, a tent, or staying in a cozy cabin like Cabin 2, the combination of mountain breezes, pet-friendly policies, and top-tier amenities makes Pioneer Campground a standout choice. For the local Pennsylvanian looking to trade the noise of the suburbs for the rustle of the leaves on Sonestown Mountain, this campground provides the perfect balance of adventure and tranquility.

Lovely campground about 3 hours out from Philly. This campground is also about 15 minutes from World End State Park. Beautiful scenic views and hiking trails all around. Great area for stargazers as well. Sites are very generously spaced out and the grounds are dog friendly. It seemed liked everyone had a dog and despite that, it was very quiet and all were very well behaved. We stayed in cabin 2, and the cabin itself is was nice. It came with a mini fridge, table queen bed and two sets of bunks in separate room. AC/heat available. WiFi is a bit spotty but I would only use it mostly to check the weather and do bare minimum with it anyways. There is a nice large stone built fire pit, and a separate charcoal grill. We didn’t get to explore the pool much as it was rainy on our weekend. Instead we hung out at the pavilion played some games. We also did the hiking trail which is about 1.50-2 miles long. We ran into the owners a few times and they were always very nice and personable. Overall, a very pleasant experience and I would definitely like to return in the future.

Beautiful, clean, and friendly. We have stayed here several times over the years. It continues to improve! So nice to camp in the woods and it is still easy to maneuver large rigs throughout. Sites are huge and individually maintained, even the fire pits are clean and tidy. We arrived Wednesday before a holiday weekend. We watched as everything was cleaned up and made ready for all of the incoming guests. And the young people doing the work were so friendly! Laundry facilities are beautiful!

Beautiful place to stay. John and Stacy are amazing host. We stayed in a cabin and it was beautiful and furnished with any and everything you might possibly need. Everything was spotless and well maintained. The landscaping and scenery was to die for. It's family and pet friendly. I can't think of anything that could have made our experience any better.

Absolutely love this campground. We've stayed two times so far, and plan on going at least once a year. This is one of the few campgrounds left that is still family run. It's so important for a camping experience, for me, having a family run campground that you can tell is truly cared about. It's not like one of the main stream campgrounds that has sold out and is just looking for the big money. They make you feel like you're truly welcomed there, while simultaneously running EVERY activity and maintaning the campground on their own, as a family. I admire the family for how much they truly care and how effortlessly they show it. Thank you for making this campground what it is. See you next year!
