Portsmouth Camp Meeting Introduce
For those of us living in the Ocean State, finding a place that offers both physical relaxation and spiritual rejuvenation is a rare treasure. Portsmouth Camp Meeting, located on the beautiful Aquidneck Island in Portsmouth, Rhode Island, has been providing exactly that since its founding in 1891. Originally established as a traditional camp meeting ground, it has evolved over more than a century into a cherished interdenominational Christian campground. It serves as a sanctuary where individuals and families from all over Rhode Island and New England gather to disconnect from the frantic pace of modern life and reconnect with their faith and community.
Stepping onto the grounds of Portsmouth Camp Meeting feels like stepping back into a simpler time. The property is characterized by its iconic Tabernacle, historic cottages, and towering pine trees that provide a natural canopy for worship and fellowship. Unlike commercial campgrounds that focus solely on recreation, Portsmouth Camp Meeting prioritizes a "spirit-mind-body" approach. It is a place where the morning air is often filled with the sound of prayer and the evenings are reserved for vibrant worship services. For local Rhode Islanders, it offers a unique "holy ground" experience that combines the nostalgia of old-fashioned camping with a deep, meaningful mission to make Christ known.
The community aspect of the camp is perhaps its most enduring legacy. Many local families have been attending for generations, with cottages often being handed down from grandparents to grandchildren. This creates a "family reunion" atmosphere every summer, particularly during the primary camp meeting weeks in August. However, you do not need to have a family history here to feel welcome. The camp is open to all, fostering an inclusive environment where Methodists, Baptists, Catholics, and non-denominational believers all find common ground under the swaying pines of Portsmouth.
The location of Portsmouth Camp Meeting is ideal for those who want to enjoy the coastal beauty of Rhode Island while remaining in a secluded, peaceful setting. Situated at 69 Hedly St, it is conveniently located near the intersection of major local routes, making it easily accessible for residents of Newport, Middletown, and Bristol. Despite its proximity to the bustling historic district of Newport and the popular local beaches, the campground itself remains a quiet "divine oasis." The management has also ensured that the facility is accessible to everyone in our community, featuring wheelchair-accessible entrances and designated parking lots to accommodate all visitors comfortably.
Accessibility at the camp extends beyond physical infrastructure; the staff and counselors are known for their helpfulness in ensuring that every guest can navigate the grounds and participate in activities. Whether you are arriving for a single evening service or staying for a full week of youth camp, the layout is designed to be navigable and welcoming. The presence of on-site parking and clearly marked facilities makes it a stress-free destination for families traveling with children or elderly relatives who wish to enjoy the serene environment of Aquidneck Island.

What makes Portsmouth Camp Meeting worth choosing for a Rhode Island resident? In a world that is increasingly "rootless" and digital, this campground offers a sense of belonging and a connection to something eternal. It is worth choosing if you value a vacation that feeds your soul as much as it rests your body. The lack of glowing screens and the presence of face-to-face fellowship create a rare opportunity for true "Sabbath rest." Whether you are a parent looking for a safe, morally-grounded environment for your children or an adult seeking spiritual renewal, the camp’s focus on Bible-centered teaching and family-like relationships is unparalleled.
Furthermore, the affordability of the camp makes it an accessible option for many local families. Supported entirely by donations and modest fees, it remains one of the most cost-effective ways to enjoy a week-long retreat on Aquidneck Island. The quality of the youth mentorship is another deciding factor; parents often rave about the positive influence the counselors have on their children. Choosing Portsmouth Camp Meeting means joining a 130-year tradition of faith, fraternity, and fun. It is more than just a campground; it is a community that strives to live out its mission to love and lift up Christ in everything they do.
Ultimately, whether you come for the "eating frenzy" of good home-cooked meals in the dining hall, the high-energy volleyball competitions, or the powerful evening services in the Tabernacle, you are likely to leave feeling more refreshed than when you arrived. It is a place where strangers quickly become friends and friends become family, all while surrounded by the natural beauty of the Rhode Island landscape. If you are looking for a summer experience that leaves a lasting impact on your heart, Portsmouth Camp Meeting is a local treasure waiting to be discovered.

I have been attending Portsmouth Camp Meeting my whole life. I started on the youth plan at the age of 12. Every year is a new opportunity to grow physically, socially, and more importantly, spiritually. Through worship, devotions, and evening services, we learn the importance of being in Gods word on a daily basis, and to earnestly seek after Him. This year was the best year I have ever had. Words cannot describe how thankful I am for effort the counselors made to spend time with us and pray with us. Yes, it is fun to have competitions and to do the extra activities, but in the end, it’s the friends that become family that make it memorable.
I had the best week of camp of my entire life, and all it took was becoming a girls counselor at portsmouth camp. Although the games and activities were so much fun and the competition was high energy, this can be found anywhere. What set the week and this camp apart from all others was the spiritual emphasis and the close knit-family like relationships built together. There was 100% positive participation. Everyone was so uplifting and encouraging to one another whether It be cheering for their team or even the other team. It didn't matter, we were all ultimately a team as older campers helped the younger campers to memorize verses, complete challenges, and strive to grow spiritually. As a counselor I was so thrilled to be a part of the week and I have never been so sad to leave!
This year was my first year experiencing Portsmouth Camp, and I had the honor of being a councilor. Let me just say that I have never experienced anything like this in my life. God revealed to me throughout the week how amazing He truly is by displaying such commrodary, and unity in such a short time. Before camp I was skeptical about becoming a councilor this year. However, it was the highlight of my summer and I enjoyed every second of it. Within a week we became family and developed a Christlike love for eachother that continues on to this day. I highly recommend it for any young person who wants a fun, life changing week and experience God’s amazing love he has for us. I was so encouraged by this camp and I am looking forward to next year! I have only good to say about this place cause God is doing amazing works at Portsmouth Camp!
To many, Portsmouth Camp is a second home to those who attend. Through a week long encampment, connections are formed that can easily last a lifetime. Not only are earthly connections formed, but also many gain/strengthen their connections with God here at camp. Portsmouth Camp also offers an outstanding youth program plan, where kids, ages 12-18, meet together in Christ and have daily devotions, a week long competition, and daily activities. Activities also include off camp destinations such as the beach, biking, or, my favorite, roller skating. This being my 5th year, Portsmouth Camp has never created a stale moment, for it always leaves me wanting more of the love from the people and friends around me. Every year, I meet new people that I will know for a lifetime. Every year, I pray for it to never end.
At Portsmouth Camp there is a christian youth program called The Plan. This program lasts the whole week and we do tons of fun stuff like going to the beach, roller blading, kayaking, biking, and at the end of the week we have an ice cream social! On top of all these fun activities we also do tournaments and earn points for our teams! This year the green team (which we named the cacti) won and we decided to get chinese food! Although this all sounds fun, there is still devotional/worship time that help us grow our relationships with God and is a great reflecting time. This was my last year as a camper on The Plan but it as the best year! I’ve never felt so close to any friends before and i’m happy to call each of them part of my family. They always knew how to support me, lift me up, made me laugh and at the end of the week... made me cry when we parted ways. The counselors really helped all of the campers with every struggle we had, or trial that we faced, and on top of that, they also knew how to make us all laugh. I am already looking forward to next year and i’m hoping that i’ll be able to help out as a counselor too!
