Riverview Park Campground Introduce

For Pennsylvania residents looking to reconnect with the raw beauty of the Poconos, Riverview Park Campground offers a unique and authentic outdoor experience. Situated in East Penn Township, this destination is a favorite for those who prefer the simplicity of primitive camping over the crowded amenities of commercial RV parks. Nestled directly along the banks of the Lehigh River, it provides a serene backdrop for weekend warriors, anglers, and families who want to fall asleep to the gentle sound of flowing water. As the only riverside campground on this section of the Lehigh, it serves as a critical hub for local recreation, blending natural tranquility with active adventure.

The philosophy at Riverview Park is rooted in the "primitive" camping tradition. This means that while you won't find electric hookups or luxury clubhouses, you will find a pristine environment that encourages self-reliance and deep immersion in nature. Local Pennsylvanians often utilize the park as a base camp for multi-day excursions, whether they are paddling down the river or cycling through the history-rich corridors of the region. The park’s atmosphere is friendly and community-oriented, managed by the local township to ensure that the landscape remains preserved for generations of outdoor enthusiasts to come.

Location and accessibility are major highlights for this Lehighton gem. Located at 465 Riverview Rd, Lehighton, PA 18235, the campground is easily reached via Pennsylvania Route 248 and Route 895. Its strategic position makes it a convenient escape for residents of Allentown, Bethlehem, and Scranton, all of whom can reach the site in under an hour. The park itself is integrated with the East Penn Trailhead of the D&L Trail, a famous rail-trail that stretches across eastern Pennsylvania. This allows campers to arrive by vehicle or, for the more adventurous, via bicycle or boat, making it one of the most accessible "car-free" camping options in Carbon County.

Upon arrival, visitors will find on-site parking specifically designed to accommodate campers and those using the public boat launch. The campground features a "walk-in" design for several of its sites, preserving the quietude of the riverside by keeping vehicles in a centralized, wheelchair-accessible parking lot. This layout ensures that the riverbank remains unobstructed and peaceful. Accessibility is a priority here, with wheelchair-accessible entrances and parking facilities that allow everyone to enjoy the scenic overlooks and recreational zones. For those traveling from further afield in the state, the proximity to the Pennsylvania Turnpike (I-476) ensures that the journey is as straightforward as the stay is relaxing.

The services offered at Riverview Park Campground are managed by East Penn Township, focusing on providing essential infrastructure while maintaining a rustic feel. Because the campground operates on a permit-based system, the township ensures that the number of visitors is regulated, preventing overcrowding and protecting the local ecosystem. The registration process is straightforward but requires a bit of planning, reflecting the township's commitment to organized and safe community recreation.

  • Camping permit registration through East Penn Township, available by contacting the municipal office or applying online.
  • Meticulous maintenance of the riverside grounds and communal areas to preserve the natural Pennsylvania landscape.
  • Waste management services, including trash receptacles located near the parking areas to encourage a "Leave No Trace" environment.
  • Seasonal oversight from April through October, allowing guests to experience the best of the spring, summer, and autumn foliage.
  • On-site support for local groups, such as scout troops and outdoor clubs, looking for a designated space for group activities.
  • Coordination with local bike rental and shuttle services that operate within the park, facilitating easy exploration of the D&L Trail.
  • Information services provided by the township office to help first-time visitors understand local fishing regulations and river safety.

Features and highlights are what truly define the Riverview Park experience. Beyond the designated tent sites, the park acts as a comprehensive recreational facility. It is widely known for having one of the best public boat launches in the area, making it a primary destination for kayaking and tubing. The presence of the D&L Trail right at your doorstep means you have miles of flat, scenic pathways for hiking and biking, perfect for all skill levels.

  • Prime riverside tent sites that offer direct views and easy access to the Lehigh River for swimming and fishing.
  • A well-maintained children's playground, making the park a favorite for families with young kids.
  • Direct access to the D&L Trail, ideal for long-distance biking or kid-friendly nature hikes through the woods.
  • A professional-grade disc golf course that winds through the park, offering a fun competitive activity for campers and day visitors.
  • Clean vault toilets located conveniently near the parking area and a short walk from the campsites.
  • Communal picnic tables and fire rings at each site, providing the classic setting for evening campfires and outdoor meals.
  • A public boat ramp that serves as an excellent entry point for non-powered watercraft like canoes and kayaks.
  • Scenic overlooks and wildlife viewing opportunities, where lucky campers might spot bald eagles or local river otters.

For those ready to plan their stay, it is important to remember that all camping at Riverview Park requires a permit from the township. It is highly recommended to call the office in advance, especially for weekend stays during the peak summer months. The staff can guide you through the application and ensure your spot is reserved before you make the trip.

When choosing a campground in the Lehigh Valley area, Riverview Park Campground is worth choosing because it offers an authentic connection to the river that few other places can match. For Pennsylvania residents, it is a chance to escape the "resort" style of camping and get back to basics. It is worth choosing for the convenience of its location; being able to cycle the D&L Trail or fish the Lehigh River just steps from your tent is a rare luxury. While the experience is primitive, the presence of clean restrooms and a well-managed township permit system provides a level of security and comfort that makes it a reliable choice for families.

Furthermore, the value of Riverview Park lies in its versatility. It is an excellent spot for the early-morning angler looking to catch trout, a group of friends planning a kayaking trip, or parents wanting to introduce their children to the outdoors. The "wild" and natural feel of the park is balanced by its proximity to the town of Lehighton, giving you the peace of the woods with the safety of nearby services. Choosing Riverview Park means choosing a true Pennsylvania adventure, where the focus is on the river, the trail, and the memories you create under the stars. It is an honest, beautiful, and deeply rewarding way to experience the best of the Keystone State’s natural heritage.

Would you like me to help you find the current permit application or provide a list of local shops in Lehighton where you can pick up camping supplies and fishing bait?

People bring dozens to 5 person restricted sites, generators, speakers, grab spots even if reserved by others. It's the wild west. Good river swimming tho.

Very nice well maintained tent camping area right next to the Lehigh river. This would be an excellent camping spot for somebody who wants to get up very early in the morning and go fishing in the Lehigh river. You have to call the township to get a permit before you go to the campground. There are clean vault toilets in the parking area of of Riverview park which is a very short walk from any of the campsites. I have not camped at this campground but I'm considering camping there before the end of the summer.
