Scaroon Manor Campground Introduce

For those seeking a camping experience that seamlessly blends natural Adirondack beauty with a touch of Hollywood history, Scaroon Manor Campground in Pottersville, New York, is a premier choice. Situated on the west shore of Schroon Lake on Taylor's Point, this state-run facility occupies the grounds of what was once an illustrious private resort for the wealthy. Today, the manicured lawns and historic remnants, such as the famous outdoor amphitheater, provide a unique backdrop for modern adventurers. As a New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) facility, it offers a peaceful, well-maintained environment that captures the essence of a quiet "small town" getaway while providing world-class views of one of the region's most beloved lakes.

Scaroon Manor is particularly noted for its spacious layout and commitment to universal design. Unlike many traditional campgrounds that feature rugged, uneven terrain, Scaroon Manor was specifically designed and constructed to be fully accessible to people with disabilities. This makes it an inviting destination for campers of all mobility levels who wish to enjoy the crisp mountain air and the crystal-clear waters of Schroon Lake. Whether you are visiting for a weekend mini-vacation or a longer seasonal retreat, the friendly atmosphere and stunning landscape make it a hidden gem within the Adirondack Park.

Location and accessibility are among the campground's greatest strengths. Located in Pottersville, NY 12860, the site is easily accessible from Interstate 87 (the Northway), making it a convenient drive for residents from the Capital District, Saratoga, or even the New York City metro area. The facility features a wheelchair-accessible entrance, a paved parking lot, and accessible restrooms and showers. For those who need to stock up on supplies, the quaint "main street" area of Pottersville is nearby, featuring local small businesses, while larger retail options like a Dollar General are just a ten-minute drive away. This balance of seclusion and convenience ensures that even those looking to go "off the beaten path" are never too far from essentials.

  • 60 well-maintained campsites, including four specifically designated accessible sites.
  • Dedicated tent sites with platforms (notably sites #55 and #60) for those who prefer traditional camping.
  • Modern restroom facilities with flush toilets and hot showers.
  • Access to a sandy swimming beach on the shores of Schroon Lake.
  • On-site boat docks and a fishing pier for water-based recreation.
  • Kayak and canoe rentals available for exploring the 1,200 feet of shoreline.
  • Trailer dump station and a recycling center for RV and trailer users.
  • Picnic area with a large pavilion, perfect for family gatherings or celebrations.
  • Junior Naturalist Program (ages 5-13) offering educational games and activities.
  • Firewood available for purchase near the campground entrance.

The features and highlights of Scaroon Manor Campground reflect its rich heritage as a mid-century resort destination. One of the most unique highlights is the historic amphitheater, which once hosted famous entertainers and served as a filming location for the 1957 movie "Marjorie Morningstar." Today, campers can explore these ruins and enjoy the expansive meadows that were formerly part of a golf course. For outdoor enthusiasts, the campground serves as a gateway to numerous hiking trails, ranging from gentle shoreline strolls to more challenging treks up Pharaoh Mountain. The lack of heavy insect activity and the quiet enforced by strict quiet hours (10:00 PM to 7:00 AM) further enhance the peaceful experience.

  • Stunning panoramic views of Schroon Lake and the surrounding Adirondack wilderness.
  • Universal accessibility across the majority of campsites and all public facilities.
  • Kid-friendly hiking trails and a playground area, making it a great destination for young families.
  • Excellent freshwater fishing for northern pike, smallmouth bass, and yellow perch.
  • Historic interpretive kiosks that detail the site's fascinating history as a luxury resort.
  • Pet-friendly environment, allowing dogs with valid proof of rabies vaccination.
  • Close proximity to regional attractions like Stone Bridge and Caves.
  • Very clean facilities and exceptionally polite and helpful staff members.

If you are ready to book your stay or have specific questions about site availability, Scaroon Manor Campground can be reached through the regional DEC office or the campground directly during the operating season, which typically runs from mid-May through Labor Day weekend.

What is worth choosing when planning your next Adirondack adventure? Scaroon Manor is worth choosing because it offers a level of cleanliness and tranquility that is often hard to find at larger, more commercial parks. While some visitors note that the campground has fewer structured "kids' activities" than a resort, it is precisely this lack of clutter that appeals to those who enjoy making their own adventure and appreciate a quiet night under the stars. Choosing this location means opting for spacious sites where you won't feel crowded by your neighbors and enjoying a beach that, while modest in size, provides a perfect, clean entry into the lake.

Furthermore, the historical significance and the meticulously maintained universal accessibility make it a standout choice for anyone who values inclusivity and heritage. For the dedicated tent camper who wants to avoid the "glamping" crowds, the hardened surfaces and specific tent-only sites like #60 provide an "absolutely amazing" and authentic experience. Whether you're there to celebrate a special occasion or simply to recharge your batteries, Scaroon Manor Campground offers a high-quality, professional, and friendly environment that truly represents the best of New York’s state park system. I came here for a mini-vacation to celebrate my girlfriend's birthday in early September. We stayed here for 2 nights at site #60 and we had an absolutely amazing experience. The staff were some of the most polite I've met, the landscape is stunning, and the sites were very well maintained. The town this campground is set in is one of the most beautiful examples of quaint small town America I've seen. It's one of those places where everyone knows each other's name and everyone is super friendly. I loved going in to the small "main street" area and going to all the small businesses along the street. This campground is far from any large population center, but there are several stores such as Dollar General about 10 minutes down the road which has everything you would need for camping inside it. The closest walmart is also about a 40 minute drive if you absolutely need it.I absolutely do not recommend this campground for children, I see many complaints on other reviews saying "my kids didn't enjoy it here" and "there wasn't anything fun to do here." There are very few activities available at this campground, so you have to be the type of person who enjoys making their own adventure and prefers to go off the beaten path to enjoy your stay here.All-in-all this is the most beautiful and quiet campground I have ever had the pleasure of staying at. It is a absolute hidden gem. For every camper who wants to do some REAL camping with a tent and despises those "glampers" and their cushy RV's I highly recommend sites #60 and #55. Thank you!

We really enjoyed this camp ground. At first I was a bit worried with the openness that I would not like it but we stayed on a good note which had lots of privacy. The entire campground is really clean and nice to walk through. We did not even put on bug spray because they where non-existent. The beach here is a bit small for a lake so big but overall it's a great campground. You can purchase wood right outside the gates for 5 dollars a bundle. There is also a cool old ampitheater that you can explore. Def would recommend and I will be going back

Very busy during the peak season as it is a lovely NYS campground on Schroon Lake. I like to go in the off season, park outside the gate & enjoy the grounds which include the beach & the old ruins of the amphitheater

This is an unusual State campground in the Adirondacks because of its spacious open grassy areas. Most Adirondack campgrounds operated by the State have no grass cover and are heavily treed with dead leaves and pine needles only. This is a relatively new campground and was the site of a former upscale resort hotel with a rich history. The aforementioned grassy areas were the resort’s golf course. The beach is tiny but adequate. If you desire shade and trees, choose sites in the Amphitheater Loop. Be prepared for mortal combat with black flies and gnats. The hamlet of Schroon Lake is a ten minute drive and has everything you will need for provisions as well as dining.

We didn't camp here so we can't comment on that part. We just came to explore the old amphitheater. It was fun to explore it and imagine what it must have been like in its glory. It's sad to see it in such disrepair now. We're thankful for being able to go in and see it and for the information signs. The lake is beautiful as well as view. The whole place appears to be very enjoyable.
