Sunset Vue Campground Introduce
Sunset Vue Campground is a classic outdoor destination located in the heart of Smethport, Pennsylvania. Known for its elevated position and namesake views, this campground has long been a staple for those seeking the quiet beauty of McKean County. For residents of the Keystone State, Smethport represents the quintessential "Pennsylvania Wilds" experience—a region defined by vast forests, rolling mountains, and a peaceful pace of life that is increasingly rare in more urban corridors. Sunset Vue captures this essence, offering a home base for travelers who want to wake up to the mist over the valleys and wind down their evenings watching the sun dip behind the Appalachian ridges.
The campground carries a rich history as a family-owned retreat. While it has seen different eras of management, the core appeal of the site has always been its natural vantage point. Recently, the park has entered a new chapter under new ownership, with active renovations underway to restore the grounds to their peak condition. For local families who remember camping here in the 1990s, the revival of Sunset Vue is a welcome development. The current focus is on preserving the rustic, nostalgic charm that made it a favorite for generations of bike-riding children and campfire-loving adults, while upgrading the infrastructure to meet the needs of modern campers.
Location and accessibility are major highlights for Sunset Vue Campground. Situated at 140 Sunset Vue Drive, the park is easily reached via the local road networks of Smethport (zip code 16749). It is positioned just a short distance from US Route 6, which is famously known as one of the most scenic highways in the United States. This makes the campground an ideal stop for those embarking on a cross-state road trip or for locals coming from nearby hubs like Bradford or Kane. The drive into the campground itself involves a gradual ascent, which is necessary to reach the high-elevation clearings that provide the "Vue" everyone comes for.
The park is laid out to maximize the landscape, with paths that are well-suited for both vehicles and pedestrians. While the terrain is mountainous, the camping areas are maintained to allow for level setup of tents and recreational vehicles. Its proximity to the Allegheny National Forest and the Kinzua Sky Walk means that residents are perfectly positioned to explore the broader natural wonders of Northern Pennsylvania. Whether you are arriving with a heavy-duty trailer or a compact passenger car, the accessibility of Sunset Vue makes it a practical choice for a weekend getaway or an extended seasonal stay.
Services at Sunset Vue Campground are designed to provide a comfortable outdoor living experience. As the new owners continue their renovation efforts, the available amenities are being refreshed to ensure reliability and safety. The park caters to a diverse range of camping styles, from traditionalists who prefer the simplicity of a tent to RVers who require more comprehensive support for their rigs. The management emphasizes a friendly, local-first service model that makes every guest feel like part of the Smethport community.

What is worth choosing when it comes to Sunset Vue Campground? For the local Pennsylvania resident, the answer lies in the opportunity to witness a restoration firsthand. Choosing Sunset Vue means supporting a local business that is working hard to bring a historic community asset back to life. It is worth choosing for the sheer tranquility that comes with its elevation. You won't find the loud crowds of a commercial theme park here; instead, you find the real Pennsylvania—the one where you can hear the wind in the trees and watch the sunset without obstruction.
Furthermore, the campground is an excellent choice for those who value memories and legacy. For many, staying here is a way to pass down the tradition of mountain camping to a new generation, just as many current adults did with their parents decades ago. Its location in Smethport, the "McKean County Seat," offers a perfect mix of small-town charm and wild frontier. If you are looking for a place where you can disconnect, breathe in the fresh mountain air, and enjoy one of the most spectacular vistas in the state, Sunset Vue is a destination that truly lives up to its name. It is a work in progress that already offers more beauty than most finished sites ever could.

Appropriately named! Has an amazing view! New owners! Currently renovating. Working to restore it to it's former Beauty!!!
This used to be a decent campground. (1990s) I spent most of my early childhood camping with my parents at this place.I had fun playing in the pool, hanging out with friends at their camp site, riding my bike up and down the path road.It is sad that the owners couldn't keep it up or consider selling it to someone who could maintain it and keep it running. However, I do know that they were an middle aged couple with teenage kids back then to help and it was their home as well. So I understand if they couldn't afford to/ didn't want to sell it. This couple must be well into their "Golden years " now and with the kids gone it had to have been overwhelming for them to keep it maintained. In the end it was left unofficially closed.
Drove there today [June, 2013]. The place appears to be closed and run down. There is no sign at the road other than the street number 140. The entrance is a long road winding through overgrown fields and forest up a hill maybe half a mile. Pavement is mostly broken up and there are a lot of ruts and pot holes in the remaining gravel and dirt surface. There is a welcome sign at the office indicating this is Sunset Vue, but the area is overgrown and appears closed. It looks like there is no water in the nearby swimming pool.I decided this was not a place I wanted to camp so I did not get out to investigate further.
Any updates on this campground? Sure do miss it.....
