The Colonies RV Travel Park & Country Store Introduce
The Colonies RV Travel Park & Country Store is a hidden gem located within the historic boundaries of Fort Monroe National Monument in Hampton, Virginia. This unique destination offers a rare combination of coastal recreation, military heritage, and modern camping comforts. Identifying as both veteran-owned and women-owned, the park prides itself on a high standard of service and a welcoming atmosphere that reflects the patriotic spirit of its surroundings. As the only overnight sleeping option directly on the "Freedom's Fortress" peninsula, it provides an immersive experience for those who want to wake up to the salty breeze of the Chesapeake Bay while standing on ground that has witnessed over 400 years of American history.
The park is designed to be an intimate and tranquil retreat, far removed from the overcrowded commercial campgrounds often found in high-traffic tourist zones. It serves as an ideal home base for Virginia residents and travelers who want to explore the Peninsula's attractions, including the Casemate Museum, the historic moated fortress, and the scenic boardwalks. Whether you are arriving in a large motorhome or pitching a tent for a weekend getaway, The Colonies offers a well-maintained environment where the focus is on relaxation, community, and the natural beauty of the Virginia coastline. Its small scale ensures that every guest receives personalized attention from the friendly staff, who are well-known for their local knowledge and hospitality.
Location and Accessibility are standout features that make The Colonies a preferred choice for regional campers. Situated at 501 Fenwick Road, the park is located on the eastern tip of Hampton at Fort Monroe. For those traveling via I-64, the park is easily accessible by taking Exit 268 for Mallory Street and following the well-marked detour signs toward the fort. Its position on a peninsula means the park is practically surrounded by water, with Mill Creek on one side and the expansive Chesapeake Bay on the other, allowing guests to witness both stunning sunrises and breathtaking sunsets without leaving the property.
The park is committed to being inclusive and accessible to all visitors. It features a wheelchair-accessible entrance, dedicated parking spots, and fully accessible restroom and shower facilities. The internal roads and many of the RV pads are paved or hard-surfaced, ensuring a stable and level environment for mobility aids and large vehicles alike. Once on-site, the flat terrain of the fort makes it exceptionally easy for guests to walk or bike to the nearby beaches, the Engineer Wharf fishing pier, or local dining spots like the Paradise Ocean Club and the Oozlefinch Beers & Blending brewery.

What is worth choosing when it comes to The Colonies is the opportunity to stay at a "city-within-a-city" that offers a level of safety and tranquility rarely found in urban environments. For many Virginia residents, the park is worth choosing specifically for its veteran-owned status and its location within a National Monument. There is a profound sense of pride and history here that elevates the camping experience from a simple overnight stay to a memorable journey through time. The ability to walk from your camper to a 19th-century stone fortress or watch ospreys nesting in the towers near the bathhouse provides a connection to nature and heritage that is truly unique.
Additionally, the park is an excellent choice for those who value clean, well-managed facilities without the "corporate" feel of larger chains. While the park is small, it provides plenty of space and a layout that allows for both privacy and social interaction. The convenience of having a stocked country store on-site and the proximity to high-quality local dining and craft breweries makes it a practical choice for modern travelers who want the best of both worlds: a rugged outdoor setting and modern comforts. If you are looking for a peaceful retreat with world-class views and a deep connection to Virginia's coastal history, The Colonies RV Travel Park & Country Store is a premier choice on the Chesapeake Bay.

Customer Reviews
Arrived on Thursday evening for the 4th of July weekend and the staff is absolutely wonderful. The shower that's made available for those that are camping in tents, like us, is clean and cool there's a washer and dryer available for use also. And they had this cute little ice cream social today. The store has everything you may need that you may have forgotten.
Great location. plenty of space and a lot of activities to do all around the area. but kind of pricey compared to other similar camps
This park is wonderful. It was easy to arrange dates to stay and the staff was friendly. Park is clean and lots to do and see just at the Fort.
Very nice RV park with full hook ups and a beautiful view of the waterfront. Has all you need. Small and quiet.
Getting here is a little hectic. Tons of traffic. Once you’re on the island things get a bit nicer. The RV park is small and quaint. A little rundown. The camping store has a good selection. Nice employees. One washer and dryer. One bathroom stall for each, men and women. They’re big and have a shower in them. Usually clean. FHU in the circle/the sites with state names. W&E on the other side. You pull in and check in and then have to go out of the circle and over to your side. People in the circle tend to park in the way and you might have to go on the grass to go around. You get a day pass to go to the beach club. There’s a brewery on the island but it’s not the best. They do have lots of events though. The Fort is amazing. I’m not sure I’d recommend people staying here though lol. Depends what you’re looking for. If you want a little chaos and you don’t mind a little run down, you can make it work!
