Wakonda Family Campground Introduce
Wakonda Family Campground is a cherished destination for those seeking a true Adirondack getaway. Established in 1990 and operated as a cooperative, this 82-acre facility in Pottersville, New York, offers a unique community-driven atmosphere that sets it apart from standard commercial parks. The grounds are designed to foster long-term relationships and a sense of shared stewardship, making it a favorite for local families who return season after season. Nestled among mature forests and scenic waterways, the campground provides a serene environment where the natural beauty of the New York region takes center stage.
The property is famously situated to offer the best of both lake and river life. It boasts frontage on a 35-acre private lake known as Lake Wakonda, as well as a half-mile stretch along the beautiful Schroon River. This dual access allows residents and visitors to enjoy a wide variety of aquatic activities in a peaceful, motor-restricted environment. The cooperative structure of the park ensures that the facilities are meticulously maintained by shareholders who take pride in their community, resulting in a clean, safe, and exceptionally welcoming environment for guests of all ages.
Location and accessibility are key highlights for the Wakonda Family Campground. Located at 3915 East Schroon River Road, the park is easily reached via the I-87 Northway, making it a convenient escape for residents of the Capital District or even those traveling up from New York City. Despite its ease of access, the park remains secluded enough to offer the quietude that mountain travelers crave. The surrounding area is rich with Adirondack history and natural wonders, ensuring there is always something to explore just beyond the park gates.
- Located just south of Schroon Lake, offering quick access to larger lake amenities and local dining.
- Features a wheelchair-accessible entrance and a dedicated wheelchair-accessible parking lot to ensure all family members can enjoy the grounds.
- A short drive from the Natural Stone Bridge and Caves, one of the region's most famous geological attractions.
- Convenient on-site parking for both residents and visitors, with clearly marked areas for easy navigation.
- Proximity to the Northway (I-87) via Exit 26 or 27, allowing for a straightforward commute from major New York hubs.
Wakonda Family Campground offers a comprehensive range of services tailored to the needs of modern campers while maintaining its rustic charm. Because it operates as a cooperative, the services are focused on consistency and reliability. - Propane refill services located directly on-site for the convenience of RVers and cottage residents.
- A coin-operated laundry facility and modern "personal care centers" containing clean public restrooms and hot showers.
- Routine maintenance of the secondary electric system and internal road network to ensure safe and easy access throughout the season.
The features and highlights of Wakonda are centered on active family participation and outdoor recreation. The park is designed to be a "playground" for both kids and adults, with facilities that encourage movement and community interaction. Guests can enjoy a diverse array of highlights during their stay:

- Comprehensive sports facilities including a paved basketball court, a sand volleyball court, a tennis and pickleball court, and a softball field.
- A well-equipped playground featuring swings and modern play structures, making it highly "good for kids."
- A dedicated dog park and pet-friendly policies (dogs allowed) that ensure your furry companions can enjoy the outdoors with you.
- Waterfront features such as a small-boat/canoe rack and a launch area for easy access to the Schroon River and Lake Wakonda.
