Wilderness Lake Campground & Resort Introduce

For Connecticut residents looking to trade the suburban hum for the rustle of hemlocks and the lap of lake water, Wilderness Lake Campground & Resort offers an authentic outdoor sanctuary. Tucked away on over 100 acres of pristine countryside in the "Quiet Corner" of the state, this destination provides a versatile escape that caters to everyone from solo backpackers to families in luxury RVs. As a local staple in Willington, the resort captures the essence of a classic New England summer, combining the ruggedness of the backcountry with the comforts of a managed resort. Whether you are seeking a weekend of catch-and-release fishing or a home base for exploring the nearby state forests, Wilderness Lake serves as a scenic gateway to the natural wonders of Tollend County.

The atmosphere at Wilderness Lake is intentionally low-tech and welcoming, fostering a community spirit that many Connecticut locals find refreshing. It is a place where "unplugging" is not just a suggestion but a way of life, encouraged by the peaceful environment and the hospitality of the onsite management. Guests frequently remark on the balance between the primitive, spacious tent sites and the well-equipped RV areas, all of which are designed to immerse visitors in the landscape. For those accustomed to the faster pace of life in Hartford or New Haven, this campground provides a necessary recalibration point, where the most pressing concern of the day is whether to take the canoe out before or after a midday picnic.

Location and accessibility are among the top advantages for visitors choosing Wilderness Lake. Situated at 150 Village Hill Rd, Willington, CT 06279, the resort is remarkably easy to reach, located just over a mile from Interstate 84. This makes it an ideal stop for those traveling across the state or heading north toward vacation spots in Maine and Vermont. Despite its proximity to the highway, the deep woods and the central lake create a sound barrier that ensures a quiet and secluded experience. For local travelers, the entrance is easy to find, though first-time visitors often appreciate the personalized service where staff members meet guests at the entrance to guide larger rigs to their specific spots—a thoughtful touch that navigates the long, scenic driveway with ease.

Accessibility on-site is a priority, ensuring that the beauty of the lake and woods is available to all. The resort features a wheelchair-accessible entrance and a dedicated wheelchair-accessible parking lot. Furthermore, the facilities include wheelchair-accessible restrooms, making the campground a practical choice for inclusive family reunions and group outings. The layout of the campground is designed to be walkable, with the main bathhouse centrally located to serve the various loops, from the "Bluff" sites to the waterfront beach areas. This level of planning ensures that even while you are deep in the Connecticut woods, you are never far from the essentials.

The services offered at Wilderness Lake Campground & Resort are comprehensive, supporting a wide range of camping styles. The onsite staff is known for going the extra mile, including delivering firewood and kindling directly to your site. The service model focuses on creating a self-contained environment where guests have everything they need for a successful stay. Key services include:

  • Full RV camping services including electric hookups (30 and 50 amp) and water hookups to accommodate modern motorhomes and trailers.
  • Onsite grey water hookups and "honey wagon" pumping services for seasonal and long-term stays.
  • A well-stocked general store providing basic groceries, ice, camping supplies, and propane refills.
  • Clean and heated bathhouses with free hot showers and flush toilets, maintained regularly for hygiene and comfort.
  • Free use of canoes and kayaks for all registered guests, allowing for effortless exploration of the spring-fed lake from dawn until dusk.
  • Managed firewood sales with onsite delivery to prevent the spread of invasive forest pests.
  • Dedicated onsite services for reservations and guest assistance, maintaining a personal, "low-tech" touch through phone-based booking.

The features and highlights of the resort are what truly define its reputation as a premier Connecticut destination. The spring-fed lake is the heartbeat of the property, offering a clean and surprisingly clear body of water for recreation. Beyond the waterfront, the property is a playground for outdoor enthusiasts of all ages. Highlights include:

  • A private fresh-water lake featuring a sandy beach area perfect for sunbathing and swimming.
  • Extensive hiking and biking trails that wind through the 100-plus acre property, offering a mix of easy walks and more challenging terrain.
  • Diverse camping options including primitive tent sites, premium waterfront RV sites, and even trailer rentals for those without their own equipment.
  • Family-friendly amenities such as a new playground, mini-golf, and a game room for rainy day entertainment.
  • Sporting facilities including a volleyball court, horseshoe pits, and a recreation hall for community events.
  • Pet-friendly policies that allow friendly dogs to join the family adventure, with plenty of shaded areas for walks.
  • Catch-and-release fishing opportunities, with the lake being home to various local fish species.
  • Kid-friendly hikes and planned activities like family cookouts and live music during the peak summer season.

For those ready to plan their next getaway, the resort encourages calling directly to discuss site availability and specific needs. Whether you are looking for a "high ground" site for a better breeze or a beach-side spot for the kids, the staff can help tailor your reservation. Payments are traditionally handled via cash, check, or debit cards, ensuring a straightforward transaction for local users.

When considering what is worth choosing at Wilderness Lake Campground & Resort, the value lies in the "free-to-explore" philosophy. It is worth choosing because of the included amenities that many other campgrounds charge extra for—specifically the free use of kayaks and canoes. This allows families to enjoy the water all day long without worrying about hourly rental fees. Additionally, the size of the sites is a significant draw; unlike many crowded RV parks, the primitive tent sites here are often described as huge and peaceful, offering the kind of privacy that is increasingly hard to find in Southern New England.

For parents, the campground is worth choosing for its safety and kid-centric focus. The "Good for Kids" designation is supported by the variety of activities available on-site, from the sandy beach to the playground and mini-golf. It is a place where children can safely ride bikes and explore nature while remaining within the secure boundaries of the resort. For RV owners, the ease of access from I-84 combined with the professional escort to your site makes it a stress-free choice, especially for those who may be nervous about navigating wooded turns. Ultimately, Wilderness Lake is the ideal choice for anyone in Connecticut who wants a professional, clean, and beautiful outdoor experience without the "commercial" feel of larger national chains. It remains a true local gem where the owners take pride in their land and the happiness of their guests.

We camped here for one night traveling from the south to Acadia National Park. It was a very family friendly and welcoming campground, with a great location near the interstate. Our primitive tent site was a distance from the clean bath house but not too far to walk. The site was huge and peaceful. Would definitely stay here again. I did find out the only way to get a reservation is to call and send a check but I do not blame them for keeping it low tech. Just know that you should call and talk to them to make your reservation.

Nice campground with great views. Clean facilities. Nice sandy beach. We normally camp near the ocean, the water here was surprisingly clean. Boys used the canoes and kayaks all day long. Fished in between. Would definitely come back.

We camped for one night here on our way from ME to Alabama. This is a great camp with woods and pond. Lot was level and plenty long enough. Has a family feel to it. Staff was great. The only downsides are you have to pay cash and no sewage. I would recommend this campground. We were able to reserve without paying upfront. It was very quiet and peaceful.

We paid cash for two nights. The next morning we were told the water was disconnected due to the end of the season. $70/night for what? Parking? Their solution was for us drive to a truck stop to cycle our water. We did, only to find out neither truck stop on the exit has a functioning dump station. The owner should have told us before we paid for 2 nights. We were disappointed.

This place is hard to navigate, but the tent site was flat and there was a portapotty directly across (thank goodness, I never did find the bath house). We arrived separately, and my traveling companion arrived to get a map they charged him again! I had already paid for our 2 adults. It was loud, but things quieted down at a reasonable hour. A bit pricey (especially since we paid twice) for what we got. Cash only- and hard to make a reservation.
