Hog Point Campground Introduce
Hog Point Campground is a serene and secluded destination located within the secure perimeter of Naval Air Station (NAS) Patuxent River in St. Mary's County, Maryland. Situated at the picturesque confluence of the Patuxent River and the Chesapeake Bay, this campground offers a unique opportunity for those looking to immerse themselves in nature while enjoying the safety and exclusivity of a military installation. Known by locals and frequent travelers as a hidden gem, the site provides a rugged, back-to-basics experience that prioritizes stunning water views and quiet nights under the stars.
As a primitive camping area, Hog Point is designed for purists who appreciate the simplicity of tent camping. Unlike larger, more developed commercial parks, this location focuses on preserving the natural landscape. Visitors often speak of waking up to the gentle sounds of the bay and watching the sunrise over the water from their tent flaps. Whether you are a local resident of Southern Maryland with base access or a traveling military family, the campground serves as a peaceful retreat from the hustle and bustle of daily life, providing direct access to miles of shoreline and wooded trails.
The location and accessibility of Hog Point Campground are defined by its position on a high-security military base. To visit or stay at this facility, guests must be able to gain entry to NAS Patuxent River. Generally, access is restricted to active-duty service members, reservists, retired military personnel, 100% disabled veterans, and Department of Defense (DoD) civilian employees. Because it is located on Cedar Point Road, campers enter through the installation's gates and follow paved roads that lead deep into the quiet, wooded reaches of the base where the campground is nestled. Its proximity to Lexington Park and Solomons Island makes it a convenient spot for exploring the broader beauty of the Maryland coastline while maintaining a private home base.

The proximity to the water makes it an ideal staging ground for those who enjoy aquatic activities like kayaking, fishing, or crabbing along the 12 miles of accessible base shoreline. Furthermore, the base offers a 10-mile paved loop perfect for bicycling and exploring the historic and natural landmarks scattered throughout the area.

What makes Hog Point Campground worth choosing is the rare combination of affordability, security, and natural beauty. In an era where many campgrounds are becoming overcrowded and noisy, Hog Point remains a "hidden gem" that offers a truly quiet and secluded experience. The ability to watch military aircraft in the distance while sitting by a campfire on the edge of the Chesapeake Bay is a contrast you won't find anywhere else. It is an excellent choice for those who want to disconnect from technology and reconnect with the scenic heritage of Maryland’s southern shores.
While the facilities are primitive, the cleanliness of the area and the hospitality of the MWR staff ensure that your stay is comfortable. If you value a site where the primary entertainment is the sunset and the sound of the wind through the pines, Hog Point is arguably one of the best value camping experiences in the Maryland region. It offers a sense of exclusivity and tranquility that serves as a perfect reward for those who serve or work within the military community.

There is a very clean porta potty. H4 is the best site, site 1 and 2 are very close, but both have good views of Chesapeake bay. You must be able to get on a military base in order to get to these sites. Definitely a hidden gem
Super cool place, quiet and secluded, amazing water views as you wake up too.
Very quite and relaxing
We scattered the ashes of Karen Hatch, formerly of PMA-276, off the Point here. She was a true classic and will be greatly missed by all. RIP Karen.
It's a peaceful location, perfect for a break from the chaos.
