Naval Weapons Station Yorktown - Cheatham Annex Recreation Area Introduce
Naval Weapons Station Yorktown - Cheatham Annex Recreation Area serves as a premier destination for military personnel, retirees, and eligible Department of Defense (DoD) civilians looking for a tranquil outdoor escape in the heart of Virginia’s Historic Triangle. As part of the Navy Getaways program, this facility offers a unique blend of natural beauty and historical significance. Nestled along the banks of the York River and adjacent to the scenic Colonial Parkway, the recreation area provides a peaceful environment that feels worlds away from the hustle and bustle of city life, despite being only minutes from some of the nation’s most famous historic sites. Whether you are planning a family reunion, a quiet weekend of fishing, or a base for exploring Williamsburg, this campground offers a high standard of hospitality and cleanliness.
The Cheatham Annex Recreation Area is widely recognized by local military families for its well-maintained grounds and diverse accommodation options. From modern RV pads with full hookups to primitive tent sites for a more traditional outdoor experience, the facility caters to all levels of camping enthusiasts. The area is also home to several well-appointed cottages, many of which offer stunning waterfront views. The quiet, secure atmosphere of the installation provides peace of mind for guests, allowing them to focus on the variety of recreational activities available, from hiking through mature hardwood forests to kayaking on serene freshwater lakes. This location is not just a place to park an RV; it is a comprehensive recreational complex designed to support the morale and welfare of the military community.
Located at Chase Rd #284, Williamsburg, VA 23185, the Cheatham Annex Recreation Area is exceptionally positioned for accessibility. It is situated on the northern end of the Virginia Peninsula, bordered by the York River and the Colonial National Historical Park. For local Virginians, the site is easily reached via Interstate 64, taking exit 242 onto Route 199 toward Yorktown and following the signs toward the Cheatham Annex gate. Its proximity to local landmarks is a major draw; Colonial Williamsburg, Jamestown, and the Yorktown Battlefield are all within a 15-mile radius. For thrill-seekers, Water Country USA and Busch Gardens Williamsburg are located just a few miles from the base gates, making the campground an ideal home base for a regional vacation.
Once inside the installation, the campground is clearly marked and easy to navigate. The RV park is primarily located on B Street, while the main check-in office is situated at the 4th Street Recreation Center (Building 236). Accessibility is a priority at this facility, which features wheelchair-accessible entrances, parking lots, and restrooms to ensure that all authorized guests can enjoy the grounds comfortably. While the base feels secluded, it remains close to the amenities of Williamsburg and Yorktown, though guests should note that on-base shopping is limited primarily to the nearby Navy Exchange gas station and a small shopette, so stocking up on groceries in town before arrival is recommended.

Choosing Cheatham Annex Recreation Area is worth it for anyone seeking a high-quality, secure, and affordable camping experience in Coastal Virginia. Excellent recreational facility for military personnel. Clean cottages with the comfort of home at reasonable prices.
Nice FamCamp. We had a multi-day stay. Our site was concrete, had a picnic table and fire ring. The Bath House was nearby and was clean. Though it was not advertised, there is an unsecure wifi network. The FamCamp was quiet and by appearances, most of the guest were in the area to attending training courses. There are a number of cabins nearby as well. Our site was full hookups, W/E/S and there was a dump station available near the exit that also had an Air and Vacuum Machines ($1.00 and $1.50). The only downside to this Park are the skunks. There is a large family of skunks that raid through the camp site at night. They were also seen along the road between the RV park and cabins, so if you walk your dog in the evening be warned. The location makes getting around to local tourist sites easy.
Wow! I wish I knew about this over the past 15 years while I was stationed close by. This is a hidden gem. I randomly found this place on Google Maps and it is absolutely one of the best places I've ever taken my two sons. An entire Cottage that sleeps 4 people right near the water for $80 a night is something that you never see or hear of any more.
This is a military lodging location. Not everyone can stay here.Great value for what you get compared to off post. You cannot beat the area it is in, 15 minutes away from Williamsburg and Busch Gardens. It could be a bit cleaner, but they are old buildings (the ones we stayed in, there are new cabins). Added bonus, 202 A and B are definitely haunted.
Would be 5 stars if it weren't for the trails on the campsite. This is our second time visiting and it's one of our favorite little staycations. The first time we visited there was bad weather, but this time it was beautiful. So, we decided to take our dog on the trail before dinner. It was a lovely trail and a nice length at a little over a mile, but when it spit us out of the trail we were not even close to the campsite. We finally got our bearings and walked down a road that led us into view of the front of the campsite...but we were behind a locked fence. Our options were either to walk about a mile and a half back to the trail and through it or walk all the way around on the roads which would've been at least 2 miles. All that being said, nice campgrounds just beware of the trails. Go there and back or prepare for a long walk. No signage letting you know the trail mileage or map showing where it leads.
