SNA-Z SPOT Introduce

For those seeking a true return to nature within the borders of New London County, SNA-Z SPOT offers a rare and nostalgic escape on the shores of Gardner Lake in Salem, Connecticut. Established in 1954, this family-owned destination has spent over seven decades preserving a specific type of outdoor experience that is increasingly hard to find in the modern world. Unlike highly commercialized resorts, SNA-Z SPOT prides itself on being a "real" camping destination, where the focus is on the environment, the water, and the quiet camaraderie of long-time seasonal residents and visitors. It is a place where generations of Connecticut families have unplugged from the grid to enjoy the simple pleasures of lakeside living.

Operating as both a campground and a private waterfront recreation area, the property serves as a vital hub for local outdoor enthusiasts. The name itself is a tribute to its founders—derived from the "Sna" of the Snarski family and the "Z" of the Zaleski family—and that spirit of family heritage continues to define the management style today. The grounds comprise a beautiful, treed waterfront that was hand-cleared by the original owners to open up views of the 528-acre Gardner Lake. Today, it remains a peaceful sanctuary where the rustle of leaves and the lapping of waves take precedence over the hum of electronic devices.

Location and Accessibility are significant draws for residents of nearby towns like Colchester, Montville, and Bozrah. Located at 310 Old Colchester Rd, Salem, CT 06420, the facility is easily accessible from major local routes while feeling entirely secluded once you pass through the entrance. The property is designed to be welcoming to a wide range of guests, featuring on-site parking and a wheelchair-accessible parking lot to facilitate access for those with mobility considerations. Because it sits directly on Gardner Lake, it provides one of the most direct and private access points to the water in the region, making it a preferred spot for those who want to avoid the larger crowds at the public state park boat launches.

The services offered at SNA-Z SPOT are tailored toward traditional recreation and seasonal water access. The facility functions as a comprehensive waterfront club, providing essential services for both land-based campers and boating enthusiasts. These services include:

  • Seasonal boat slip rentals for various watercraft, including powerboats, sailboats, and pontoon boats.
  • A private boat launch area exclusively for the use of members and registered guests.
  • Dedicated kayak and canoe storage racks located at the cove area for easy water access.
  • Seasonal membership options for families, providing access to the beach and recreation areas.
  • Managed on-site parking for both vehicles and boat trailers.
  • Restroom facilities and seasonal portable toilets maintained for guest convenience.
  • Professional management by the founding family, ensuring a high standard of privacy and peace.
  • Designated swimming areas specifically for dogs, allowing pets to cool off alongside their owners.

The features and highlights of SNA-Z SPOT reflect its commitment to a rustic and tranquil lifestyle. The property is a haven for "unplugged" recreation, encouraging guests to use their imaginations and connect with the natural world. From the historic trailer sites that have been in families for decades to the active waterfront, the highlights include:

  • Private Waterfront Access: A neatly mowed and leveled treed waterfront offering some of the best views on Gardner Lake.
  • Extensive Water Activities: Facilities for swimming, kayaking, canoeing, water skiing, tubing, and wakeboarding.
  • Fishing Excellence: Access to the deep waters of Gardner Lake, known for bass, walleye, and yellow perch.
  • Rustic Campground Atmosphere: 115 campsites that emphasize a "back-to-basics" feel without the noise of modern electric hookups.
  • Pet-Friendly Environment: Dogs are allowed on-leash, with a specific area dedicated to canine swimming.
  • Nature Watching: Excellent opportunities for bird watching and observing local Connecticut wildlife in a protected forest setting.
  • Family-Oriented Layout: The grounds are widely considered good for kids, offering plenty of space for outdoor play and learning survival skills.
  • Historic "Minnie Island" Proximity: An easy paddle away from Connecticut’s smallest state park, located in the middle of the lake.

What is worth choosing at SNA-Z SPOT is the unparalleled sense of peace and privacy that the owners have maintained for over 70 years. If you are a camper who finds modern RV parks too crowded or noisy, this location is worth choosing for its "old-school" approach. The lack of electricity and running water at the sites is not a detraction but a feature—it attracts a community of like-minded individuals who value quiet evenings by a gas lantern and the crackle of a real stone fireplace. This makes it an ideal choice for those who want to teach their children or grandchildren the value of self-reliance and the beauty of nature without the distractions of the digital age.

Furthermore, the marina services make it a top choice for local boaters. Having a seasonal slip on Gardner Lake at a family-run facility provides a level of security and community that larger marinas often lack. The inclusion of a private launch means less time waiting in line and more time on the water. Whether you are choosing SNA-Z SPOT for a summer-long seasonal stay or as your home base for lake recreation, you are choosing a piece of Connecticut history. It is a destination that rewards those who appreciate the rustic, the authentic, and the serene, making it one of Salem's most cherished hidden gems.

I grew up camping there from 1968 until 1986, I wouldn't trade those years for anything in the World❣️ Yes, it's rustic but face it it's real camping, not a pull in plug in place. As kids we used our imaginations. My mother would even put the headlights of her car on a storage building across the side road and would teach us Shadow Puppets. If you wanted power for certain times we had a car battery to hook up and give us lights in the camper. We used old kerosene lanterns. I wish I had them now. Back then the owners were Helen and her Pete and I think it was her sister had the liquor store and shop before Gondon's Store, They were really nice people. They used to have a Democratic Party down near the lake every year.It was in mid August around my birhhday on the 19th. It was awesome. Everyone in the campground was invited! I think it was Then their was Leece's meats and restaurant/ sub shop. I have more wonderful memories there and would love to bring my granddaughter there for a summer!!! I remember the owners daughters riding the horses and letting them cool off in the lake. We were there from the day school got out until maybe 5 days before school started. I would love to know if they ARE OPEN, and if anybody rentts their camper out for the summer? I live in SC now but it would be well worth the trip. I don't need to spend goobs of money in Myrtle Beach or Charleston. I would rather give my granddaughter an experience she won't forget, besides learning a few survsl skills! It might come in handy in the future, and won't,t hurt her that's for sure. UNPLUG PEOPLE and truly relax❣️

Family owned campground since 1954. I've been camping on Gardner Lake for over 50 years and Sna-Z Spot Campground is the most private and peaceful campground on the lake. If you enjoy nature, making new friends, peace and quiet, then Sna-Z Spot is the place for you!

This campground is CLOSING - they need to renovate and update and owners refuse to comply. Many campers from many generations hve camped their for 40-50years and now need to remove their campers and leave.

We had a fun day with friends. It was nice being somewhere in 4th of July that was not crowded. I wish they had electricity and running water though.
