For New Jersey residents seeking a perfect balance between rugged outdoor adventure and resort-style comfort, Sun Retreats Avalon stands as a premier destination. Formerly known as Big Timber Lake RV Resort, this expansive property is nestled in the heart of Cape May Court House, surrounded by acres of lush New Jersey nature preserves. It serves as a scenic home base for local families and road-trippers who want to experience the best of the Jersey Shore while retreating to a peaceful, wooded environment at the end of the day. Whether you are arriving with a luxury fifth-wheel or looking to enjoy a weekend in a furnished cottage, the resort offers a professional and welcoming atmosphere tailored to the modern camper.
Sun Retreats Avalon is more than just a place to park an RV; it is a full-scale vacation destination. The resort prides itself on maintaining a clean and engaging environment where guests of all ages can find something to enjoy. From the massive 2,000-square-foot outdoor pool to the picturesque swimming lake complete with a sandy beach, the water features are a central highlight for local visitors. The management focuses on providing a safe, gated community experience, ensuring that families can relax while children enjoy the various playgrounds and organized activities. For those who appreciate the beauty of the Garden State's southern reaches, the resort provides a unique opportunity to live among the trees while remaining just minutes away from the Atlantic coast.
Location and accessibility are major advantages for New Jersey locals choosing Sun Retreats Avalon. Situated at 116 Swainton Goshen Road, the resort is conveniently located near the Garden State Parkway (Exit 13), making it a straightforward drive from points north like Toms River or Cherry Hill. Its position in Cape May Court House places guests in the middle of a recreational goldmine. Within a short drive, residents can visit the Cape May County Park & Zoo—a local favorite that is both free and world-class—or explore the sprawling hiking trails of the Cape May National Wildlife Refuge. The vibrant boardwalks and sandy beaches of Avalon, Stone Harbor, and Wildwood are also just a few miles away, offering the quintessential Jersey Shore experience without the noise of beachside traffic.
Inside the resort, the layout is designed to be accessible to a wide range of visitors. The facility features wheelchair-accessible entrances, parking lots, and restrooms, ensuring that the camping experience is inclusive for everyone. The terrain is notably flat, which makes it ideal for bike riding and easy walking. While the resort is expansive and can accommodate large rigs, it is worth noting for those with trailers over 35 feet that certain sections feature mature trees that may require careful maneuvering. However, the professional office staff and gatehouse security are frequently cited by locals as being exceptionally helpful in assisting guests as they settle into their sites.

Great fun spot to camp. Staff is friendly and helpful. Some transient spots are difficult to get into because of the tree location and proximity to spots across from you. When you’re swinging your fifth wheel it was nearly impossible if other spots were occupied,. Me had friends had a difficult time in spots especially; 187,188, 542, 541, 540. It wouldn’t take much to Trim these small trees but they don’t seem too concerned about it. Spot 186 has a “widow maker”a.k.a. dead tree and if it fell it would take out my truck and my fifth wheel in one shot and you might want to avoid this spot. If your 5’er is under 35 feet it may less of an issue.
We went to Sun Retreats Avalon for the weekend. I wasn't impressed for the price. Spots were ok at best. I will say the Ladies in the office/camp store were extremely nice. But all in all we could have stayed at Thousand trails around the corner for half the price. I have never paid so much for a campground in my life. I had high expectations for the price. Over $150 a night!! We stayed on the water at the lake Ontario Sun Retreats for a little over $100 a night and the campground is much nicer.
Interesting I've never heard of now you have to pay for parking to visit a camp Ground $10 a person $10 to park a car,, 2 people so $30. prices are high enough to camp and now they hit you with family visiting $10 to park $ 10to visit., I mean I've heard of paying to visit but parking it's not an vv5 amusement park just sad,, family likes to come visit to see the campgrounds and check them out but now they have to pay to park absolutely crazy. way to be greedy and make money just sad won't be telling anybody to go to that Campground way to go campgrounds.
Typical "down the shore" campground. Needs WIFI/cable upgrade, and mosquito control. You'll get covered with mosquitoes leaving the trailer or the car, even in broad daylight. Campground is too cheap to spray. WIFI and cable sucks. Even if you pay the extra per month to get the better WIFI, it still sucks.
It's a RV/ trailer park . It is private. You need to own a place to obtain access. There is a pool, and a lake with a mini beach. They have a restaurant. There is also miniature gold, basketball/ tennis courts. There are scheduled daily activities. They also have men/woman bathrooms with showers. It's lovely
