Sunset Park Campground Introduce

Sunset Park Campground is a cherished outdoor destination located in the tranquil town of Hampstead, New Hampshire. Spanning 72 acres of lush, wooded terrain and open grassy fields, this family-oriented campground has been welcoming generations of campers since 1957. Situated on the shores of Sunset Lake, also known locally as Wash Pond, the park offers a quintessential New England camping experience. For residents and visitors in the New Hampshire region, it serves as a peaceful escape that balances rustic charm with modern convenience. The atmosphere is specifically curated to be family-friendly, fostering a sense of community where long-term seasonal residents and transient travelers alike can enjoy the natural beauty of the Granite State.

The park is designed to cater to a wide variety of camping styles, from traditional tenting enthusiasts to modern RV travelers. With a strong emphasis on maintaining a quiet and safe environment, Sunset Park Campground is known for its meticulously kept grounds and friendly staff. Whether you are looking to spend your days lounging on the private sandy beach or participating in organized community events, the campground provides a versatile backdrop for summer memories. Its reputation for being a "peaceful and quiet" retreat makes it a top choice for those who want to avoid the more commercialized, high-traffic tourist zones while remaining within easy reach of New Hampshire's most popular attractions.

Location and accessibility are two of the primary draws for Sunset Park Campground. Found at 104 Emerson Avenue in Hampstead, the park is ideally situated in Rockingham County, providing a central hub for exploring southeastern New Hampshire. It is located just 9 miles from the famous Canobie Lake Park in Salem, making it a favorite "home base" for families visiting the amusement park. Additionally, the campground is roughly a 45-minute drive from the seacoast attractions of Portsmouth and Hampton Beach, as well as the shopping destinations in Kittery, Maine. For those traveling from out of state, the park is easily accessible via Interstate 93, taking Exit 3 and following Route 111 east.

The internal accessibility of the park is also well-regarded. The campground features a wheelchair-accessible entrance and dedicated parking lots to ensure that all guests can enjoy the facilities. The main loop of the park is well-maintained, though guests should be aware of the strictly enforced 5-mph speed limit, which is in place to ensure the safety of children and pedestrians. The proximity to the Hampstead conservation trail system further enhances the location, offering miles of mountain biking and hiking opportunities just outside the campground gates. This blend of secluded lakeside living and proximity to urban amenities like Derry and Salem makes it a highly strategic location for local campers.

  • Full-service RV camping including electric (30 Amp), sewer, and water hookups.
  • Seasonal and transient campsite rentals for long-term or short-term stays.
  • Canoe, kayak, and rowboat rentals for exploring the waters of Sunset Lake.
  • On-site firewood and ice sales for guest convenience.
  • Clean and modern restroom facilities equipped with hot showers.
  • Managed waste disposal and a designated dumping station for RV travelers.
  • A variety of rental units including a yurt, a cottage, and a trailer for those without their own camping gear.
  • Planned community activities such as Olympics Weekend, Halloween in August, and the Annual Gong Show.

The features and highlights of Sunset Park Campground center around its 400-foot private sandy beach on Sunset Lake. The lake’s sandy bottom makes it an excellent spot for swimming and wading, particularly for families with small children. For those who enjoy sports and group play, the park is equipped with a variety of recreational courts and fields. The presence of mature trees provides ample shade for most sites, while the stone fire pits and picnic tables at every site allow for a classic "outdoor living" setup. Nature lovers will also appreciate the local wildlife, often hearing the calls of loons and owls throughout the evening.

  • Private sandy beach access with a designated swimming area for guests.
  • Excellent freshwater fishing opportunities, particularly for large-mouth bass.
  • On-site playground and swings designed for younger children to play safely.
  • Recreational facilities including a softball field, basketball court, and volleyball area.
  • Traditional camping games such as horseshoe pits and cornhole courts.
  • A covered pavilion area which serves as a hub for Wi-Fi access and community gatherings.
  • Dog-friendly environment (with pre-approval and vaccination proof) to accommodate pet owners.
  • Spacious wooded and grassy lots that provide a sense of privacy and "getting back to nature."

For those looking to secure a spot at this popular New Hampshire destination, advance reservations are highly recommended as the park frequently fills up, especially during peak summer months and holiday weekends. Lot 20 is odd, pull in forward, with barely enough room, then back out. The main loop is roughly a mile and the authorities are ardent about 5mph. Mostly seasonal spots, well kept, very quiet, beach was nice. Location is beautiful. Paying to have some come for dinner is real irritating.

There is no pool like it shows on the pictures. It has a nice beach and lake though. There are rules but that’s what keeps the place clean and nice. We really enjoyed our visit. Everyone was very nice. We would consider having a seasonal site here someday. Plenty of activities!

So much fun, Park staff go to great lengths to create fun activities for children. The entire park is maintained meticulously & all the staff are very friendly & responsive to campers needs or concerns. They are very safety conscious. It's no wonder campers (& staff) are multi- generational...I was the new guy & I was there 8 seasons ! Gonna miss Kendra, Pam & Bob, Rhonda,Walter & Mike
