Twin Lakes Recreation Area Introduce
Twin Lakes Recreation Area is a hidden gem nestled within the lush landscapes of the Allegheny National Forest in North Central Pennsylvania. This destination serves as a premier outdoor sanctuary for those seeking to reconnect with nature through camping, water activities, and forest exploration. Known for its spring-fed, trout-stocked lake and serene atmosphere, the area has long been a favorite for locals and visitors alike. Whether you are looking for a quiet weekend in a tent or a comfortable stay in an RV, Twin Lakes provides a picturesque setting characterized by towering hardwoods and meandering streams.
The history of the area adds a layer of character to the camping experience. Originally the site of the McKean Chemical Company in the early 20th century, the land was later transformed by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) in 1936. The CCC constructed the dam on Hoffman Run that created the lake guests enjoy today, along with the original campground and picnic facilities. Today, the park is meticulously maintained through a partnership between the U.S. Forest Service and the non-profit organization Friends of Twin Lakes (FOTL), ensuring that this "slice of heaven" remains open and vibrant for future generations of Pennsylvania campers.
Twin Lakes Recreation Area is situated on Twin Lakes Road in Wilcox, Pennsylvania, making it deeply embedded in the "PA Wilds" region. While the park feels remote and offers a spectacular, peaceful view of the forest, it is conveniently located just a few miles from local amenities. Travelers typically access the area via State Route 321. It is important for those driving larger vehicles to note that a railroad underpass on the main entrance road (Forest Road 191) has a strict 10-foot height clearance. To accommodate larger RVs and trailers, an alternative route via Clarion Road and Dahoga Road is recommended to avoid the low bridge and ensure a safe arrival at the campground.
The campground is designed with accessibility in mind, offering features that allow everyone to enjoy the natural beauty of Elk County. From wheelchair-accessible entrances and parking lots to accessible restrooms and seating, the facility strives to be inclusive. The layout includes both an upper and lower loop, providing a variety of camping environments. Many of the sites are tucked into the woods, offering a sense of privacy and seclusion that larger, more commercial parks often lack. This makes it a perfect choice for those who want to experience the true wilderness of Pennsylvania without sacrificing essential services.
- RV camping sites equipped with electric hookups (30-amp service available at select sites).

One of the primary highlights of Twin Lakes is the variety of recreational activities available within walking distance of the campsites. The lake itself is a centerpiece for summer fun, featuring a sandy swimming beach and a bathhouse. Anglers will find the lakeside fishing piers and the trout-stocked waters of the lake and nearby Mill Creek to be highly productive. For those who prefer land-based adventures, the area serves as a trailhead for several significant hiking paths, ranging from short interpretive walks to long-distance backpacking trails that traverse the heart of the Allegheny National Forest.

The physical address is Twin Lakes Rd, Wilcox, PA 15870, USA. Management and the "Friends of Twin Lakes" organization are often available on-site during the peak season to assist guests and ensure a high-quality experience. It is recommended to check for any travel alerts or weather-related notices before heading out, especially during the shoulder seasons of spring and late fall.
What makes Twin Lakes Recreation Area truly worth choosing is the balance it strikes between rustic seclusion and family-friendly convenience. It is a location where you can wake up to the sound of forest birds, spend the afternoon swimming in a cool mountain lake, and end the evening with a campfire under a spectacularly dark sky. The commitment of the local community and volunteers to preserve this park is evident in the well-maintained trails and clean facilities. For families, the combination of playgrounds, easy hikes, and a safe swimming area makes it an unbeatable value. For the solo adventurer, the proximity to miles of remote hiking trails provides the solitude and challenge that the Pennsylvania backcountry is known for.
Ultimately, a visit to Twin Lakes is more than just a camping trip; it is an opportunity to experience a historic piece of Pennsylvania’s conservation legacy. The spectacular views and remote feel offer a much-needed break from the digital world, while the proximity to Wilcox and Kane ensures you are never too far from civilization. Whether it is your first time visiting or your thirtieth year returning, Twin Lakes Recreation Area remains a premier destination for discovering the heart of the Allegheny National Forest.

This park was built for the boy scouts to serve as a public place for everybody,to enjoy. It's a little slice of heaven that's tucked out of the way, but well worth it.
Beautiful state park build bu the CWC. Grounds maintained by all volunteer crew and wonderfully clean. Lots of primitive campsites and great way to get back to nature
Stopped in for a day visit, had a great time. The pond was beautiful, definitely lots of fish jumping. The community building at the beach was gorgeous and well stocked. The camping spots were a bit close to each other but the folks we were there visiting we happy. They spoke of how affordable it was and they really liked camping there.
Twin Lakes hosted the 3rd annual Sunshine for Saige Jeep run this past Saturday 9/23/23. Even though the day was dreary, it was a great time. Many Jeeps did the run and activities back at Twin Lakes at the end of the day included a Chinese Auction, a small buffet meal, and a band to end the evening. Certainly many of the participants ended the evening staying at one of the campsites available at the campground area. The fundraiser for Saige is an awesome event and surely you won't want to miss it next year... usually takes place around the 3rd Saturday in September. See you there next year!!
