East Branch Campground Introduce
East Branch Campground is a serene outdoor destination nestled within the rugged beauty of Northeastern Elk County, Pennsylvania. Managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, this campground sits on the shores of the 1,160-acre East Branch Clarion River Lake. For Pennsylvania residents, this location represents a prime segment of the "Pennsylvania Wilds," a region famous for its deep forests, abundant wildlife, and high-quality freshwater fisheries. Whether you are an avid angler looking for the next big catch or a family seeking a quiet weekend away from the hustle of the city, East Branch Campground provides a rustic and tranquil environment that honors the traditional camping experience.
The campground is situated in a heavily treed area, offering approximately 75% shade overhead, which makes it a comfortable refuge even during the warmest summer months. It is particularly well-regarded for its peaceful atmosphere; visitors often note that despite being a popular spot for holiday weekends, the park maintains a quiet and respectful tone. With 31 campsites available, including both electric RV sites and primitive tent spots, as well as four cozy cabins, the park caters to a wide variety of camping styles. It serves as an ideal home base for those wishing to explore the surrounding Elk State Park and Elk State Forest, where the famous Pennsylvania elk herd can often be spotted roaming the hillsides.
Location and accessibility are important considerations for visitors to this part of Elk County. Located at 631 East Branch Dam Road in Wilcox, PA, the campground is about 13 miles north of Johnsonburg and 19 miles from St. Marys. For local travelers, the drive into the park is scenic but requires a bit of attention; the roads leading to the dam can be steep and winding, and the interior park roads are paved but can feel narrow for those operating large motorhomes or towing trailers. It is generally recommended to unhook "toad" vehicles before navigating the upper loops to ensure a smoother transition into your site.
Accessibility is a key feature of East Branch Campground, with the facility offering several ADA-compliant features. This includes a wheelchair-accessible entrance, accessible parking lots, and specialized restroom facilities. While the campground is set on a hillside—requiring a bit of a trek to reach the bathhouse from some lower sites—the infrastructure is designed to be inclusive. For those coming from the south, the park is accessible via PA 255 and local routes, while those arriving from the north can utilize US 219. The layout includes a one-way loop system that helps manage traffic flow, although first-time visitors are encouraged to consult a map or speak with the camp host upon arrival to navigate the somewhat confusing check-in markers.
The services offered at East Branch Campground are focused on providing the essentials for a high-quality outdoor stay. The campground is equipped with modern utility support for RVs and comfortable structures for those who prefer a solid roof over their heads. Management ensures that the facilities, including the restrooms and showers, are cleaned regularly to maintain the park’s reputation for cleanliness.

What is worth choosing when it comes to East Branch Campground? For Pennsylvanians, the answer lies in the park's unique blend of tranquility and recreation. Unlike larger, more commercialized campgrounds, East Branch offers a quiet retreat where you can truly hear the wind in the aspens and the call of the birds across the water. It is worth choosing for the sheer quality of the environment—the water is some of the clearest in the state, and the lack of a swimming beach actually helps maintain the lake's peaceful, boat-focused atmosphere.
Furthermore, the park is worth choosing for its value. The sites are spacious and well-maintained, providing enough room for large rigs and extra vehicles without feeling cramped. The ability to stay in the heart of Elk County, with easy access to the resupply town of St. Marys just a short drive away, provides the perfect balance of "off-the-grid" feeling and modern convenience. Whether you are looking to spend your days on the water or exploring the hundreds of miles of nearby hiking trails, East Branch Campground serves as a premier gateway to the best of the Pennsylvania outdoors. If you appreciate a well-kept, quiet, and scenic mountain lake setting, this campground is a destination that truly lives up to the reputation of the Pennsylvania Wilds.

Nice park. The roads leading into the park are a bit steep and rough. And it's confusing on trying to find the park office. We eventually found the host which was very helpful. The reservation system was somewhat confusing if you're not familiar with the park. There were plenty of sites to fit our 30 foot camper plus our Ram 2500, but didn't show up when we were looking online. We ended up in site 17 which is down a scary narrow road. But the site itself is wide and deep, but has no electricity. The dump is sited at the end of the one way road. It's basic but functional if not somewhat hard to position your rig to keep from blocking the road and still be able to dump. At least it's slanted the correct way for dumping tanks efficiently.
East Bank Campground was a very nice and peaceful COE campground. We were in site number 8 and set pretty high up on the hill (second to the last going up.) It was a little precarious getting to the site because we went around the loop from the lower righthand road and we came out right in front of our site; we got our MH turned around and backed right in. The interior roads are paved but did feel a little tight in a 35 pulling a toad (I know I should have unhooked first.)The spot needed little leveling and our jacks took care of the little that it did need. The site was long enough for our 35’ and very wide, enough so that we could park our toad sideways in front. We had the typical fire ring, picnic table, and light pole. The pad itself was pea gravel, and I’d estimate there was 75% shade overhead. The electricity was stable after the first night of power outages due to severe thunderstorms. Now there was no check-in process or camp host for direction or advice. We only saw maintenance men twice and no rangers; there were no issues, but it would have been nice to see one drive by once and a while. There is a huge lake/ reservoir for boating and fishing and general recreation. The launch area seemed easy to navigate. The town of St. Mary’s it’s about 12 or 13 miles south and there is everything you would need for resupply. The only detractor was the dump station. It’s on a grade so all your liquids would be at the other end of the tanks (at least on my rig), so I turned around and approached the other way and I had to use my 15’ hose run underneath the camper; it all worked out, but there did seem like any other place to put it in the campground. The dumpsters are right by the dump station as well as a little visitor/nature center.Regardless of the dump station location, this is a great little campground and we’d come back again for a quiet restful stay.
The campground is nice. Quiet and nicely shaded. I stayed in a cabin and that left a little to be desired. Very small as compared to other cabins in other state parks I’ve stayed in. Needed some hooks to hang stuff on in the worst way. I handy to get to the bathrooms. Not a bad place at all!
As with all army corps property it’s lacking in maintenance but it works. Nice area around it.
Been here once before in one of the four cabins available. I stayed sometime last year and it was pretty nice. I was on my motorcycle and did some riding around the Allegheny national forest. If you're doing some motorcycle camping and you have basic camping gear like a pad, bag, and pillows, it's a good spot for 55 bucks a night. The cabin is a bunk bed setup with a full on the bottom and twin up top with plenty of space to move around and electrical outlets to charge your stuff. Best of all is there's a lock on the door so you can at least have some stuff locked up while you're out riding. Will definitely stay again. It's sort of my go to camp for Allegheny forest riding. You ADV (adventure) motorcyclists will like it here.
