Anvil Campground Introduce
For Virginia families and road-trippers navigating the historic corridors of the Peninsula, Anvil Campground stands as a beacon of hospitality with a legacy stretching back over seven decades. Established in 1954 and currently operated by the fourth generation of the Jump family, this award-winning destination is more than just a place to park an RV; it is a meticulously maintained retreat that blends nostalgic charm with first-class modern amenities. Located in the heart of Williamsburg, it offers an intimate, community-oriented atmosphere that larger corporate resorts often lack, making it a favorite for local Virginians seeking a reliable "home away from home" near the state's most iconic attractions.
The campground’s unique name pays homage to the family’s heritage, as the founders' ancestors worked as blacksmiths during the original restoration of Colonial Williamsburg. This deep connection to the local history is felt throughout the park, where service is personal and the staff often knows guests by name. Whether you are arriving in a 45-foot "big rig" or looking for the cozy security of a log cabin, Anvil Campground provides a safe, clean, and engaging environment. From the sounds of the nearby Amtrak trains—a hit with children and train enthusiasts—to the shaded, level sites, every aspect of the park is designed to facilitate a stress-free outdoor experience.
Location and accessibility are perhaps the most significant advantages for guests staying at Anvil. Situated at 5243 Mooretown Rd, the campground is remarkably easy to access from I-64 via exit 238, bypassing the heavier traffic of the downtown historic district while remaining just minutes away from it. It holds the distinction of being the only Williamsburg campground with a public bus stop directly on-site, providing effortless transportation to Busch Gardens, Water Country USA, and the Colonial Williamsburg Visitor Center. This convenience allows local families to leave the car behind and enjoy a seamless transition from their campsite to the region’s premier entertainment hubs.
The layout of the park is thoughtfully arranged to maximize both space and privacy. Despite its central location in a bustling historic area, the campground is well-wooded and offers a peaceful "camp-like" feel. For those with mobility needs, Anvil Campground is highly accessible, featuring wheelchair-accessible entrances, restrooms, and parking lots. The proximity to local restaurants, shopping outlets, and grocery stores ensures that even if you forget a essential item, you are never more than a few minutes away from everything you need.
The services offered at Anvil Campground reflect a high standard of excellence that has earned it numerous national accolades, including "National RV Park of the Year." Guests can expect a full suite of services that cater to both short-term weekenders and extended-stay travelers.

For children, the Beach Park Playground and the free-to-play arcade/game room provide hours of entertainment without extra costs. The park also hosts seasonal events, such as its well-known Halloween weekends, which have become a tradition for many Virginia residents. Pet owners are equally well-catered to, with a dedicated dog park and pet-friendly accommodations that ensure the whole family can stay together.

Planning a stay at Anvil Campground is straightforward, with a reservation team available to help you select the best site for your specific needs. Because the park is a "small park" by industry standards—featuring approximately 77 sites—it tends to fill up quickly during peak summer months and during major local events like the Grand Illumination. Early booking is highly recommended to secure your preferred dates at this Virginia landmark.

What is worth choosing about Anvil Campground is the unique combination of its rich four-generation history and its uncompromising commitment to modern quality. It is worth choosing because it offers the "Goldilocks" of camping experiences: it is large enough to provide resort-style amenities like a heated pool and arcade, yet small enough to maintain a quiet, intimate atmosphere where you aren't just a site number. For families, the "kids stay free" policy and the abundance of included activities provide exceptional value that makes the vacation budget go further.
Furthermore, the cleanliness of the facilities is a recurring theme in local reviews, setting a standard for campgrounds across the Commonwealth. Amazing!Anvil campground is absolutely amazing. Its in the best place possible ( yes there is a fire station down the road, I hope they get there in time ). They are next to a train track! TRAINS! ( I personally love trains! Must be the kid in me). Everything is here, pool, game room, laundry facilities, and country store. The family who run this awesome place are just awesome. I normally camp in a camper but this time I reserved a cabin, absolutely love it! If you are a single traveler (THIS IS A SAFE PLACE!) This is my go to place to camp, hopefully I will be a (regular) status soon. Anvil campground is Amazing!
We’re an active RV family, and when planning our trip to the Williamsburg, VA area, we searched for a great campground close to the local attractions. The reviews led us to Anvil—and we’re so glad they did! This place was outstanding. Easy to get to, simple in-and-out access, and perfect for families. The arcade was a huge hit with the kids, packed with great games, board games, and more—and it was included. The staff was incredibly friendly and super helpful when we had questions about parks and tickets.Like always, we forgot a few things, but the camp store had everything we thought we brought. Big plus! We’ll definitely be back in the spring. The campground is small—but not too small—so you get space and privacy without feeling crowded like you do at some of the huge resorts. The sites here are laid out really well with plenty of room to move around.Thank you for a wonderful stay, Anvil! We can’t wait to return.
I was very disappointed with our stay at Anvil Campground. The campsites are extremely small, and nearly all of them are stone or asphalt, except for the so-called “tent” sites. Even those barely have enough grass to fit a six-person tent. Some sites have fire rings placed within about a foot of the fence separating campsites, which feels cramped and unsafe. The campground map is very misleading and not even close to being to scale. It gives the impression that there are green spaces, but in reality there’s a large, empty area in the middle of the park that feels more like a missing house lot than usable campground space. One of the two dog parks is laughably small—about 8 feet by 8 feet, minus the entry gate—making it essentially useless.Noise was a constant issue. A train passes the campground several times during the day and multiple times every night, and most sites are within roughly 50 feet of the tracks. The tent sites are the closest, making sleep very difficult. On top of that, every night we were there, a truck came in around 9 p.m. and idled its diesel engine all night long. There were also ongoing issues with management and upkeep. One campsite had a golf cart completely torn apart with parts scattered across the site for our entire stay. Additionally, I made my reservation over the phone, and they entered my checkout date incorrectly by one day. I called to have it corrected and never received a callback.Overall, the campground felt overcrowded (not a lot of people but no space), noisy, poorly planned, and poorly managed. This was not a relaxing camping experience, and I would not recommend Anvil Campground to anyone looking for a quiet or comfortable stay.
The Anvil Campground is one of the best we have stayed at this year. The staff is incredible. The campground is small with only 77 sites, but the attention to detail is amazing. Having the heated pool stay open until November is great. The bath house and showers are modern and extremely clean. WiFi worked great and playground is nice for the kids. While here they celebrated Halloween and kids could trick or treat. We will definitely return the next time we come to Williamsburg.
We stayed for just over three weeks in our RV while visiting friends. The staff was AMAZING! They were so helpful and accommodating for our needs. They allowed us to change our RV site THREE times before we arrived in order to provide us the most amount of room for a rig our size. If you have a rig 40+ ft, look for their front sites 72-78 I believe. They are premium sites but offer so much more room for your rig.The park was quaint but so very well kept! I saw some reviews about the train that runs close behind the camp. Oh well. A train runs. It wasn’t that bothersome throughout the night, but note that the born does blow during the day.Awesome campground that is close to everything and has the staff that makes the experience worthwhile! Will return again!
