FamCamp Introduce
FamCamp at Joint Base Andrews serves as a dedicated recreational haven for military members, retirees, and their families looking to explore the Maryland and Washington D.C. metropolitan areas. Located in Clinton, Maryland, this campground is managed by the 316th Force Support Squadron (FSS) and offers a budget-friendly alternative to high-priced urban hotels. For local Marylanders with base access, it provides a convenient "staycation" spot, while for those traveling from afar, it acts as a secure and strategic base of operations for sightseeing in the nation’s capital. The campground is designed to facilitate the unique needs of the military community, offering a sense of camaraderie and security that is hallmark to Department of Defense installations.
The facility caters to a variety of camping styles, ranging from modern RV enthusiasts to those who prefer the simplicity of a traditional tent setup. While the environment is distinctly military—complete with the sounds of aircraft and the structured atmosphere of an active base—it provides an essential service for the FSS Outdoor Recreation program. Visitors often choose this location for its incredible proximity to the National Mall, the Smithsonian museums, and the various historic sites of Prince George’s County. It is important to note that as a military FamCamp, eligibility requirements apply, typically requiring a valid Common Access Card (CAC) or Uniformed Services ID card for entry and reservation.
Location and Accessibility are the primary draws for FamCamp. Situated at 4520 Wheeling Rd in Clinton, the campground is positioned just minutes from the main gates of Joint Base Andrews. This location is exceptionally convenient for travelers utilizing the I-95/I-495 Capital Beltway, providing a straightforward route to both Baltimore and Northern Virginia. For those looking to avoid the complexities of city driving, the campground is a short distance from the Branch Avenue Metro Station (Green Line), allowing residents to take the train directly into the heart of Washington D.C. On-site, the facility prioritizes accessibility with wheelchair-accessible entrances and designated parking spaces to ensure that all service members and their families can enjoy the grounds comfortably.
Beyond the base gates, the Clinton area offers various local Maryland attractions. Nature lovers are within a short drive of Louise F. Cosca Regional Park, which features boating, hiking trails, and a nature center. The nearby Clearwater Nature Center and the historic Surratt House Museum provide additional local flavor for those wanting to explore the Maryland suburbs. The campground's position on the base also means guests are close to essential military amenities, including the Commissary, Base Exchange (BX), and various dining facilities, which can significantly lower the cost of a trip for families.

What is worth choosing about FamCamp? The undeniable value proposition is the combination of price and security. In a region where parking an RV or finding a campsite can be both expensive and difficult to secure, FamCamp offers a protected environment at a fraction of the cost of commercial parks. For military families, it provides a "home away from home" where the rules and environment are familiar. The ability to stay in a secure area while being less than 15 miles from the United States Capitol is a benefit that few other locations can match.
Moreover, choosing FamCamp means supporting the MWR (Morale, Welfare, and Recreation) programs that benefit the entire military community. While some visitors have noted that the facility can be "unpolished" compared to luxury resorts—with occasional issues regarding grass height or staff interactions—it remains a vital resource for those who value the mission and the location. It is a place for veterans to reconnect, for active-duty families to find affordable respite, and for any eligible user to enjoy a night under the Maryland stars. If you are a military ID holder looking for a practical, well-located, and dog-friendly spot to park your rig while exploring the Mid-Atlantic, FamCamp at Joint Base Andrews is a choice worth considering.
Ultimately, a stay at FamCamp is about the experience of being at the center of the action. Whether you are watching the planes take off from the nearby runways or catching the Metro for a day at the museums, the convenience of the Clinton/JBA location is unmatched. It serves as a reminder of the heritage of the Maryland region and its deep ties to the nation's defense, making it more than just a place to sleep, but a part of the local military culture.

Customer Reviews
We have stayed at numerous military campgrounds and this BY FAR is the most run down, over grown and rudest Outdoor Rec office staff we have encountered. The grass is literally over a foot tall or more in areas everywhere. Picnic table falling apart, water being shut off without notification, staff in office very passive aggressive when asked basic questions. When checking in, I very politely asked when the grass would be cut and response was “Sir, it’s been raining. We can’t cut the grass in the rain.” By the length of the grass, it has not been cut in an VERY long time! Extremely noisy due to road next to camp ground. This campground is a disgrace.
I had to see for my own experience why the rating on this fam camp is so bad!! Was on base called fam camp over the phone. A woman answered the phone and sounded so bothered and rude. Instead of saying "how may I help you" she said "what do you need?" With such a tone of a self entitlement. Asked me what kind of camper I had i said I had a truck camper that sits on my truck bed then cuts me off and said "oh that's not a recreational vehicle. I told her that I have been staying at various airforce fam camps all over the nation and this is the first time im being told this. I just stayed at JB charleston 3 weeks ago matter fact. It was obvious that this woman has an attitude problem. She even had the audacity to ask me what my camper has inside lol. Whoever this woman is, you're the reason why mwr has such a horrible reputation and I hope you lose your job in this govt shut down. You have no place to serve veterans in this country!!!
RV spots are concrete pads, area is spacious, FHU was $45. Many empty spots. Two washers($1.50) and two dryers($1). All of them worked well. Kids enjoyed doing a puzzle and playing with a mousetrap boardgame thats available in TV lounge. However the TV lounge has a lot of cobweb and dust. Pool table had no balls and covered in spiderwebs. Water heater in laundry room is spilling water. Toilets and showers were disgusting. There was trash on our site. Huge garbage bag in fire pit and grass growing in another. Water was leaking from the spigot in the empty campsite next to us. Campground is not taken care of.
WiFi was terrible/useless. They don’t keep the grass cut. They do a half way job. The camp host was not ever available & was told they are not that friendly. They are not there, when you need them. No one around to ask questions. All three washing machines were broken. No one was very friendly. Not kept very clean. Men’s showers were filthy. Someone peed all over the floor. No one to tell to clean it up. Just needs some updating & clean up. Also, aloof road noise. Very loud traffic. Very bad noise. Hope they improve.
Denise at MWR was very helpful and pleasant, offering ways to get around DC and the trains to get you there. The FamCamp itself has concrete pads and FHU, but the restrooms need some TLC.
