Hide-A-Way Campsite Introduce

For those living in the New York region, the hustle of the city often creates a deep longing for the crisp air and quiet rustle of the Catskill Mountains. Tucked away on Woodland Valley Road in the charming town of Phoenicia, Hide-A-Way Campsite serves as a vital sanctuary for local outdoor enthusiasts. This family-operated destination has become a preferred alternative to the often-crowded state-run campgrounds, offering a more personalized and intimate connection with the natural landscape of Ulster County. Whether you are looking for a weekend of primitive tenting or a comfortable base for your RV, this campsite provides the peaceful environment necessary to truly reset and recharge.

Hide-A-Way Campsite is celebrated for its authentic "back-to-basics" feel without sacrificing essential modern comforts. The property is meticulously maintained by owners who take a hands-on approach to hospitality, often personally escorting guests to their sites to ensure a smooth start to their stay. The campground's layout emphasizes space and privacy, featuring large grassy fields for tent campers and wooded sections that provide natural shade and seclusion. In an area known for its rugged peaks and winding creeks, this campsite stands out as a well-kept "hidden gem" that prioritizes the quiet enjoyment of the great outdoors over commercial distractions.

Location and Accessibility are two of the strongest draws for Hide-A-Way Campsite. Situated at 900 Woodland Valley Road, the campground is deep enough into the valley to feel completely remote, yet it remains just a short drive from the heart of Phoenicia. For New Yorkers traveling from the metropolitan area, the drive up the Thruway leads to the scenic Route 28 corridor, which serves as the gateway to the High Peaks. The final stretch of the journey takes you along the picturesque Esopus Creek, famous for its world-class fly fishing and whitewater tubing. While the road into the valley is winding and immersive, it is well-paved and manageable for standard vehicles and most modest RV setups.

The campground is strategically positioned near several of the Catskills' most iconic trailheads. Hikers will find themselves within easy reach of the path to Panther Mountain and the famous Giant’s Ledge, which offers one of the most stunning panoramic views in the entire region. This proximity makes Hide-A-Way an ideal "base camp" for those who want to spend their days on the trail and their nights by a private fire pit under a canopy of stars. Accessibility on the property itself is straightforward, with on-site parking available and a layout that allows for easy navigation between the campsites and central facilities.

Services Offered at Hide-A-Way Campsite are designed to enhance the traditional camping experience while providing the "creature comforts" that make a stay in the woods more convenient. The management focuses on cleanliness and functionality, ensuring that all basic needs are met with high standards. The services include:

  • Spacious tent sites located in both open fields and wooded areas.
  • RV sites featuring water hookups and options for electric and sewage.
  • Clean and well-maintained restroom facilities with running water.
  • Reliable Wi-Fi access, allowing guests to stay connected even in the heart of the mountains.
  • Provision of sturdy picnic tables and solid fire rings at every individual site.
  • On-site parking that is conveniently located near each camping spot.
  • Dedicated water sources distributed throughout the camping fields.
  • A dog-friendly policy that welcomes well-behaved pets to join the family adventure.

Features and Highlights of this Phoenicia retreat go beyond the standard list of amenities. It is the atmosphere and the unique touches provided by the hosts that define a stay here. Highlights include:

  • Exceptional Quiet Hours: The campground enforces a peaceful environment, making it perfect for families and those seeking a respite from noise.
  • Breathtaking Mountain Views: The surrounding peaks of the Shandaken area provide a dramatic backdrop for every campsite.

  • Host Hospitality: Known for "saving the day" for travelers, the owners are often available for late arrivals and site assistance.

What is worth choosing Hide-A-Way Campsite for? The primary reason to choose this location over others in the Catskills is the level of care and the quality of the sites. While state campgrounds offer a great experience, they can often feel institutional or overcrowded during peak summer weekends. Hide-A-Way provides a more human-centric experience where the sites are clean, the grass is well-trimmed, and the fire rings are ready for use. It is the perfect choice for the camper who wants the "primitive" feel of the Woodland Valley without having to hike miles into the wilderness with a heavy pack.

Furthermore, it is worth choosing for its strategic location. You are minutes away from the Phoenicia Diner for a world-class breakfast, yet far enough away that the only sounds you hear at night are the wind in the trees and the distant flow of the creek. For New York residents who only have a few days to escape the urban grind, the reliability and hospitality of Hide-A-Way Campsite make it a top-tier destination that many find themselves returning to year after year.

Ed really saved the day!We showed up to Woodland Valley Campground a little too late and were turned away, but thankfully we found Hide-a-Way Camp down the road. Ed, the owner, was super friendly and generous—he drove us up to our site and made sure we were settled in comfortably. The site itself was excellent: spacious, clean, and peaceful. It came with a picnic table, a solid fire ring, and the toilet was surprisingly clean for a rustic setup. You can tell Ed cares about the place and the people who stay there.Highly recommend this spot if you're looking for a quiet, well-kept campsite—and especially if you need a last-minute rescue like we did! Next time we might just skip the state park campsite altogether and settle in there for the weekend!

We had a great time at this campground! The tent camping is in a large grass field where everyone has their own space with tables, a fire pit, and a water source. The owners were so kind and showed us directly to our campsite. Its a bit of a drive out to it, but I would stay there again!

Ed was very accommodating and friendly. There are numerous sites to choose from. On site campers were nice enough to give us recommendations and directions. Fire pits were clean and grills were present. Highly recommended, especially for first time goers.
