Phoenicia Black Bear Campground Introduce
For New Yorkers seeking a genuine escape into the mountains, Phoenicia Black Bear Campground represents the quintessential Catskills experience. Nestled directly on the banks of the world-renowned Esopus Creek, this campground provides a unique blend of rugged natural beauty and convenient town access. It is a place where the air is crisp, the water is clear, and the towering peaks of the Catskill Forest Preserve create a stunning backdrop for every campsite. Managed with a personal touch, the property is celebrated for its peaceful atmosphere, making it a preferred destination for those who want to trade the city's noise for the rhythmic sounds of rolling water and the rustle of pine needles.
The campground caters to a diverse range of outdoor enthusiasts, from solo hikers and fly-fishers to families looking for a wholesome summer retreat. Because of its location in the heart of Ulster County, it serves as a central hub for exploring the legendary local landscape. Whether you are waking up to the mist over the creek or gathering around a large communal fire pit, the sense of community here is strong yet respectful. It is a location that rewards those who appreciate a "low-key" lifestyle, offering a refreshing lack of commercial pretension while ensuring that the essential comforts of modern camping are well-maintained and readily available.
Location and accessibility are perhaps the most significant advantages for New York residents visiting this site. Located at 17 Bridge Street in Phoenicia, NY 12464, the campground is remarkably easy to reach via the New York State Thruway and Route 28. Its position is particularly prized because it is within walking distance of downtown Phoenicia, which has been voted one of the favorite small towns in America. This means campers can enjoy a morning hike in the wilderness and then walk just a few minutes to grab a gourmet breakfast at the famous Phoenicia Diner or browse local antique shops. For those with mobility needs, the park provides a wheelchair-accessible parking lot, and the flat terrain near the creek sites allows for easier navigation compared to more rugged, mountainous sites.
The services offered at Phoenicia Black Bear Campground are designed to accommodate a wide spectrum of camping styles, ensuring that both traditional tent users and modern RV owners feel at home. The onsite services include:
- RV Camping with Hookups: Specialized sites featuring electric and water hookups, suitable for various rig sizes, including many sites located directly on the creek.

- Group Picnic Areas: Large, scenic spots on the banks of the Esopus perfect for day-use family outings or larger club gatherings.
- Quiet Hours Enforcement: A commitment to a peaceful environment that prioritizes nature's sounds over loud music or disturbances.

What makes Phoenicia Black Bear Campground worth choosing is its ability to provide an "unplugged" experience without leaving you stranded in the middle of nowhere. For the New York local, it represents the best of both worlds: you have the majesty of the Catskill Mountains and the soothing flow of the Esopus Creek at your feet, yet you are never more than five minutes away from a hot cup of coffee or a boutique shopping experience in town. It is worth choosing for the "addictive" air quality and the genuine, easy-going management that treats guests like neighbors rather than just reservation numbers.
Furthermore, the campground's dedication to maintaining a respectful and quiet atmosphere makes it a sanctuary for those who truly love the outdoors. It is a place for the respectful camper—those who understand that the best part of the woods is the peace they offer. Whether you are an avid angler looking to cast a line into the Trout Fishing Capital of the Northeast or a family wanting to introduce your children to the magic of the mountains, Phoenicia Black Bear Campground provides a reliable, factual, and deeply beautiful home base. Choosing this site means supporting a local business that cares for the land with heart, ensuring that the beauty of Phoenicia remains accessible for generations to come.

This is hands-down the best campsite in Phoenicia. As a barber who dreams of one day moving out here, I have to say—the owner is literally living my dream life. This land is beautiful, peaceful, and clearly cared for with heart. The campsites do have neighboring campers, but the tree coverage makes it feel private, and most campers are chill, respectful, and seem to understand that “camping” doesn’t mean “shouting into the void at 1am.” It’s the perfect balance of community and solitude. To the crew who left 1-star reviews… if you’re looking for a place to scream across sites, blast music, and treat the woods like your personal frat party, maybe stick to tailgates. The rest of us come here to actually enjoy nature—and each other’s peace. This place is special. If you don’t get it… that’s fine. It’s better without ya. 🙃
This is awesome place to earn experience in Catskills. Super friendly easy going management. Me and my girlfriend get addicted to the air quality, food quality, low key accomodations. We are coming over and over every weekend. George the owner of the place is one of the nicest person I've met.Highly recommend that place. Warning ⚠️ you may lost yourself in the mountains and like it!!!!! LOL...... I'll see you all there....
We come every year with our family and friends. Our daughters are now 3 and 5, and this by far is one of their favorite things we do every summer. It’s a great escape and time to unplug. We can play and relax in the river. The bathrooms are super close, maintained nice and clean. The town is right outside the campground where you can go grab ice cream, snacks, a nice diner and some cute shops. Many people go tubing down the river. It’s just perfect. We always look forward to coming. George the owner is a very cool guy. Your family will make wonderful memories here!
Owners are fantastic. I was a new camper owner last year and learned everything from either George or the other folks in the area. Everyone is friendly, it’s always clean. Right off the Esopus river, you can spend a whole day just taking in the scenery. Quick walk to the local grocery store, restaurant and liquor store if you forgot anything don’t fret!! Nearby is Woodstock brewery and the famous Phoenicia diner. Less than an hour from Kingston and Woodstock if you want to take a day trip and Mt. Tremper is a moderate challenge 2 hours to the top. I came up once and pretty much it has been my destination every time since.
Had to find last minute camping accommodations and this place was great for us. Nice little spot right by the esopus creek. Bathroom and hot showers. Each site has a fire ring and picnic table. Making reservations was easy and main street is about 3mins away walking. Would stay here again if I was in the area.
