Kenneth L. Wilson Campground Introduce
For residents of New York looking to trade the city skyline for mountain vistas, Kenneth L. Wilson Campground offers one of the most serene retreats in the Ulster County region. Tucked away in the hamlet of Mt Tremper, this New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) facility serves as a gateway to the legendary Catskill Forest Preserve. Surrounded by high peaks and dense hardwood forests, the campground is a favorite for local outdoors enthusiasts who value a quiet, clean, and well-managed environment. Whether you are a solo traveler seeking the peace of the woods or a family planning a summer tradition, this destination provides a classic camping experience with the added benefit of proximity to the artistic charm of nearby Woodstock.
The atmosphere at Kenneth L. Wilson is defined by its commitment to the "quiet hours" and a high standard of maintenance that keeps the facilities spotless. With 76 individual campsites, the park manages to feel expansive yet intimate. Most sites are deeply wooded, offering a level of privacy that can be hard to find at more crowded state parks. This sense of seclusion, combined with the sounds of local wildlife and the rustle of hemlocks, makes it a premier choice for those who want to disconnect from the digital world—especially since cell service is notoriously limited in the park, providing a rare opportunity for true mental rejuvenation under the stars.
Located at 859 Wittenberg Road in Mt Tremper, NY 12457, the campground is remarkably accessible for those traveling from the Hudson Valley or New York City. From the New York State Thruway (I-87) at Exit 19, the drive takes you west on Route 28, a scenic bypass that offers beautiful views of the Ashokan Reservoir. The final leg of the journey through Wittenberg Road winds through typical Catskill terrain, characterized by stone walls and rolling hills. Its location is approximately 5 miles southwest of Woodstock and midway to Phoenicia, making it a perfect hub for exploring the wider Ulster County area.
Accessibility is a point of pride for the facility. The park features wheelchair-accessible entrances, parking lots, and restrooms, ensuring that the beauty of the Catskills is inclusive for all visitors. Within the day-use area, there is an accessible fishing pier and a floating dock with a canoe/kayak launch, allowing everyone to enjoy the tranquility of the pond. While the terrain is mountainous, the main roads within the park are blacktopped and well-maintained, providing smooth transit for vehicles and bicycles alike.

What truly makes Kenneth L. Wilson Campground worth choosing is the balance it strikes between rustic adventure and essential comfort. In a region where many campgrounds can feel either too commercial or too primitive, this park finds the "Goldilocks" zone. You get the benefit of hot showers and flush toilets, yet you can still feel the profound silence of the Catskill wilderness. It is an excellent choice for solo campers who want a safe and quiet environment, as well as for families who want to introduce their children to hiking and fishing on a manageable, "kid-friendly" scale.
Furthermore, its location provides a best-of-both-worlds scenario. You can spend your morning kayaking on the peaceful pond and your afternoon browsing the eclectic boutiques or art galleries in Woodstock. For the local New Yorker, it offers an escape that feels thousands of miles away from the city's frantic energy, yet it is close enough for a spontaneous weekend trip. The cleanliness of the facility, the friendliness of the staff, and the stunning panoramic views of the surrounding mountains ensure that once you visit, you will likely join the many regulars who return year after year to this Ulster County treasure.

Wow! CLEAN!!!! Solo camping on Labor Day weekend was amazing! Full, yet quite not a peep after 10pm! Loved the HOT showers. The flush toilets in the restrooms. No cell service, but I brought battery packs to charge my phone so I could listen to some quiet music. Horse shoe pits and a dog park with 2 separate fields to let my dog run. The pond trail was beautiful! And the staff were so friendly! I’m already booking my next trip.
Kenneth L Wilson State Park is a very nice NY State Park located in Ulster County. The park is surrounded by gorgeous views of the Catskills Mountains. Camping, paddling, hiking, and fishing are all different activities offered by the park.Altogether there are 76 different campsites here. Most of them are spacious and secluded in the woods. All of the campsites have access to showers and bathrooms. Cell service in the park is limited. Check the park’s website to make reservations here. For day use facilities there are a few short hiking trails here. The best trail goes along the shore of the lake in the campground. Kayaks can be rented here. You can fish and there are fishing piers located along the lake . Chain pickerel, bass, are the major species in the pond. Pavilions that can be rented for large group gatherings. The recreational opportunities here are nice, however there are not as many of them as other NY State campgrounds have. From this campground there is easy access to many other Catskill attractions. Altogether, the park is a good escape and offers nice scenery.
Had a great time bringing a group of 8 friends + 1 dog here. We booked 2 adjacent campsites and stayed for 3 nights in all.Half the group camps often and the other half not as much. This was a great place to ease into camping due to the amazing facilities. The bathrooms were clean (for my campground standards). There's an industrial dish washing station with 2 sinks, as well as hot showers down the road. Clear markings and paved roads. The campsite itself was perfect. Fire pit / grill + picnic table. Note the fire pit grill has really wide spacing, so don't expect to be able to grill directly on it - you need a wire rack or something to put on top. Sites are close enough together that you'll see your neighbors, but everyone was friendly and considerate. They don't sell firewood, but there is a Hannaford rather close by to stock up. We didn't have any issues with critters, but are also good about cleaning up food items at the end of the night and storing in cars. The park rangers were all friendly and polite, though there are a few that are much stricter with enforcing rules than others, so beware. 2 of our friends were asked to move their tent due to having set up a little bit off the compacted area. I get it, but a bit lame since it was still in the designated area and just barely off. Most of the rangers didn't have an issue with it, but the guy on the 2nd day made us move it over maybe 3-4 feet.Kayaks and canoes available for rent $15-20, but apparently you can reserve these in advance, so they were all reserved already when we showed up to try to rent one. Just a heads up to reserve this when you first check in at the booth if you can.The last odd thing was that dogs aren't allowed at all in the day use area. The area is huge and has lots of grills, so we brought stuff out for a lunch BBQ only to find out that dogs aren't allowed at all. Not sure the reasoning for this rule since dogs are allowed on leash everywhere else in the campgrounds. The place was also completely empty so we weren't bothering anyone else but one of the stricter rangers came to enforce the rules. So we packed everything back up and did the BBQ at our campsite instead. Kinda lame, but ok. My guess is there was probably some incident in the past, but I hope they will reconsider this rule as it is a gorgeous area.Overall had a great time and would definitely come back for another visit. It's a really great spot with nice amenities, and a perfect way to introduce friends and family to the camping experience.
Really peaceful. I thought the lack of cell reception would be a real burden, but it was nice for a night I do wish there was ONE spot on grounds that had it though because I had to drive up road 5 min to get reception enough to change my reservation.Camp staff members were incredibly involved, even going from one campsite to the other and interacting, sitting and watching cars entering, and checking in with campers. I appreciated all of this! It made me feel so safe! There a large dog park-and signs reminding dog parents that dogs must be leashed at all times anywhere else-but none of the dogs I saw were leashed. I do wish people would obey the sign.I love walking and roaming, but a dog being friendly dislocated my hip last year, so I have to stay away (I have a medical condition that makes me fragile), and I get scared when dogs are off leash. At the showers, there was an off-leash husky just sitting out front. I simply didn’t shower, but that’s not fair to me. Leash your dogs in public places (and a campground is a public place).Other than that, I found the camp to be perfectly peaceful. Best night if sleep I’ve had in months!
Tammy and Nancy are awesome camp hosts. I did a walk in and over slept so was completely on me that I didn’t register with them in the morning. They were more than helpful and extremely nice about the whole situation. Explained to me what I should’ve done differently without reprimanding me whatsoever. I wish everyone was as nice as them. The campground is awesome too. Spaces are a bit close together but that’s to be expected at a camp ground. Steve cleans the bathrooms diligently so everything was spotless when I needed to shower and freshen up. All of them are amazing!!
