Pine Grove Campground Introduce
The Pine Grove Campground and Waterfowl Park offers a truly unique and immersive outdoor experience for those looking to explore the natural wonders of Virginia's Eastern Shore. Spanning approximately 60 acres of lush, overgrown yellow pine trees, this destination is much more than a standard place to pitch a tent or park an RV. It serves as a dedicated sanctuary for wildlife, featuring six picturesque ponds that provide a safe haven for over 50 different species of birds, including ducks, geese, swans, herons, and egrets. For residents of Virginia and visitors from across the region, Pine Grove provides a tranquil alternative to the busier resort-style parks, emphasizing a connection with nature while remaining conveniently close to the heart of Chincoteague Island's vibrant community.
The atmosphere at Pine Grove is defined by its quiet, wooded environment, which offers ample shade and a sense of privacy that is often hard to find in coastal campgrounds. Guests frequently comment on the "first-class" maintenance of the grounds, noting that the sites are well-kept and the facility remains peaceful even during peak travel seasons. This balance of rustic charm and professional management makes it a favorite for those who keep their travel trailers on the island long-term as well as those arriving for a weekend getaway. Whether you are waking up to the sound of waterfowl at dawn or relaxing under the canopy of Loblolly pines at dusk, the park delivers an authentic Virginia camping experience that captures the spirit of the Atlantic coast.
Location and accessibility are among the campground's most significant advantages. Situated at 5283 Deep Hole Rd, Pine Grove Campground is positioned just off the main thoroughfares of Chincoteague, offering a "hidden gem" feel while remaining just minutes away from local shopping, medical services, and the town center. Most notably, the campground is located approximately 7 minutes from Assateague Island and the National Seashore. This proximity allows guests to easily bike or drive to the pristine beaches and nature trails where the world-famous Chincoteague Ponies roam free. Accessibility is also prioritized on-site, with a wheelchair-accessible entrance and designated parking lot to ensure all visitors can navigate the grounds comfortably.

For families with children, the park provides a safe and engaging environment with a dedicated playground and a well-maintained seasonal swimming pool. The lack of heavy through-traffic within the campground makes the roads safer for children to ride bikes or for evening strolls. Additionally, being within walking distance of a public boat ramp and crabbing dock makes it an ideal choice for anglers and those who enjoy being on the water.

To plan your visit to this coastal sanctuary, you can contact the campground office directly. The staff is known for their "bend over backwards" hospitality, often treating guests like family and providing a personal touch that sets this independent park apart from larger corporate chains. It is highly recommended to call ahead for peak summer weekends, particularly during the famous Chincoteague Pony Swim in July.

What is worth choosing about Pine Grove Campground is the combination of affordability and tranquility. In a popular destination like Chincoteague, where prices can skyrocket at waterfront resorts, Pine Grove offers a high-quality experience at a rate that is often 30% to 50% lower than the "big name" parks. It is worth choosing for the camper who values silence over flashiness and prefers a morning cup of coffee by a duck pond over a crowded boardwalk. The spaciousness of the sites allows you to truly settle in, rather than feeling like you are parked in a parking lot.
Furthermore, the campground’s status as a bird sanctuary provides an educational and enchanting layer to the stay that children particularly enjoy. While the facilities are "older" in style, they are consistently praised for being clean and reliable, reflecting the care of a family-run business that has served the island for years. Choosing Pine Grove means choosing a "home base" that is minutes from the wild beauty of Assateague but quiet enough to ensure a restful night's sleep. Whether you are an avid birder, a family looking for a safe summer retreat, or an RVer seeking a well-maintained long-term spot, Pine Grove Campground offers the best of the Eastern Shore's natural charm and welcoming hospitality.

Beautiful campground- we keep our travel trailer here and its first class. Well kept - clean and quiet and super close to the beach. The most affordable and absolutely wonderful spot if your looking for a nice quiet place to keep your trailer and have access to all chincoteague has to offer. 5 stars 🔥
Not sure what is happening. They used to be strict with dogs, but lately, a large dog has been using the middle of our campsite - 3 times in less than 2 months - and the owners have stopped cleaning up after their dogs. I see dog waste everywhere and it stinks horribly. There needs to be a section that is dogs only and not allow them near non-dog owner sites. We have a small child and this is just not safe. If it weren’t for that, it’s perfect. Quiet, under beautiful trees, and not a lot of cars going by which makes it safer for children. Pool is nice in the summer. I pray they handle the out of control dog owners.
Off season experience was perfect. Private and quiet tent site in what felt was a wildlife refuge. The tent sites face water. You can hear so many different species of birds morning to night. Burn rings available for campfires. If you arrive later just pay the next day. The owner was absolutely lovely. This is camping so be prepared for mosquitoes and ticks. There are bathhouses with showers and a play set for children. No shortage of picnic tables. $45/night plus tax for basic setup. Cannot wait to come back!
Quiet park....sites are tight in general. We got a nice spacious site beside the pool. We stayed off season. Ponds and hobby farm to walk and explore. I enjoyed farm feeding times with lots of animals and birds. Internet at office area only. $70 per night. Friendly office staff and handy to walk or drive to main town.
Have been coming here for years. The campground remains basically the same, however it seems to have more permanent 5th wheel campers in the front of the property, pull up campers in the middle and then plenty of open spots for tents and small campers in the back. They no longer take reservations so it’s a first come first served basis. There will never be an issue of needing spots bc there is plenty of room. It includes two bathhouses, places to wash dishes and a washer/dryer. The pool is nice and clean and is surrounded by caged specialized birds for enjoyment. It’s rarely used so it continues to be a nice option before/after or instead of the beach. It’s a 10 minute drive or 30 minute bike ride to the beach. There are plenty of super tall pine trees and Loblolly pines and crape Myrtle’s to pitch your tents between. The tent only area is nestled up along a large pond/swamp that is home to many birds, geese and a “wildish” family of alpacas. You can wake up to an alpaca starring you down. There are water and electric sites available and all are very affordable. Each come with a picnic table and fire ring. While the owners are still the same, they have new employees working the front desk & managing the grounds. All are very nice and helpful. The campsite & island do get sprayed for bug as the mosquitoes are the kings & queens of the campground. As soon as you exit your tent, camper or car- spray yourself!Still my favorite campground on the island. Always recommend.
