Trails End. Introduce
For those living in Virginia who crave the unique coastal charm of the Eastern Shore, Trails End (officially known as Chincoteague Bay Trails End Campground Resort) offers a lifestyle and vacation experience that is deeply rooted in local tradition. Situated along the serene waters of the Chincoteague Bay, this gated recreational community provides a perfect escape from the faster pace of mainland life. Whether you are a weekend warrior looking for a scenic tent site or someone interested in the long-term community of RV and cottage living, Trails End captures the spirit of Virginia’s coastal wilderness. It is a place where nature and neighborly friendship meet, creating a safe and engaging environment for families and retirees alike.
The atmosphere at Trails End is defined by its quiet, friendly, and community-oriented vibe. Local residents often describe it as a small town in its own right, where children can safely ride bikes and neighbors gather for seasonal celebrations. The campground is particularly famous among locals for its holiday events, such as the massive annual Trunk or Treat at Halloween, which draws families together for a night of creative fun. This sense of community is supported by a robust infrastructure that ensures comfort while maintaining the rustic appeal of the Eastern Shore woods. From the whispering pines to the salty breeze off the bay, it is a location that invites you to slow down and enjoy the simple pleasures of outdoor living.
Located at 5360 Trails End Dr in Horntown, VA, the campground is remarkably accessible for those residing in the Tidewater or Delmarva regions. It sits just minutes from the Maryland-Virginia state line, making it a convenient destination for anyone traveling along the Route 13 corridor. Its proximity to Chincoteague Island and the Assateague National Seashore—roughly a 20 to 30-minute drive—means that campers are perfectly positioned to enjoy world-famous beaches and wild pony sightings without being in the middle of the high-traffic tourist zones. This balance of seclusion and convenience is one of the primary reasons Virginia locals choose this spot over more crowded alternatives.
Accessibility within the park itself is also a priority. The facility features wheelchair-accessible entrances and parking lots, ensuring that the beauty of the Chincoteague Bay is available to all guests. For those arriving with large RVs or trailers, the on-site parking is designed to accommodate various rig sizes with ease. The gated nature of the resort provides an added layer of security and exclusivity, ensuring that the roads remain quiet and the amenities remain available primarily for the enjoyment of residents and registered guests.
- Full-Service Restaurant: The on-site restaurant serves up hearty meals, including a popular breakfast menu, saving you the trouble of cooking every morning.
- Camp Store and General Supplies: A well-stocked country store provides ice cream, camping essentials, and daily necessities.
- Marine Facilities: Features a private marina, boat ramps, and two docks, as well as a dedicated crabbing pier and fishing station.
- Comprehensive Utility Hookups: Sites are equipped with water and electric hookups (with sewer dump stations available on-site).
- Professional Maintenance and Security: A dedicated utility department and private security team maintain the grounds and ensure a peaceful stay.
- Rubbish Management: On-site garbage containers are provided to help keep the beautiful 400-acre property clean and sanitary.
The features and highlights of Trails End go far beyond what you might find at a typical primitive campground. For many, the "crown jewel" of the facility is the large Olympic-size swimming pool and the surrounding park area, which provide a cool respite during the humid Virginia summers. Children are particularly well-catered to with a playground that includes multiple slides and swings, as well as a basketball court for friendly neighborhood games. For those who enjoy more leisurely activities, the mini-golf course and the pavilion serve as central social hubs for daily activities and weekly events.
Nature lovers will find plenty to do without ever leaving the property. The waterfront location offers unparalleled opportunities for crabbing and fishing directly from the licensed piers. For those who own boats, the marina provides a gateway to explore the intricate waterways of the Chincoteague Bay. The campground also features a clubhouse with free Wi-Fi, allowing you to stay connected if needed, although many visitors prefer to spend their time on the water or watching rocket launches from the nearby Wallops Flight Facility, which can be seen clearly from the marina.
- Three Sparkling Pools: Multiple pools cater to different ages and swimming abilities, including a swim team for local youth.
- Pet-Friendly Policy: Dogs are welcome, allowing your four-legged friends to enjoy the quiet nature trails and outdoor life.
- Recreational Courts: Includes a basketball court and volleyball areas for active recreation.
- Picnic and Outdoor Dining: Numerous picnic tables and fire pits are scattered throughout the site for traditional cookouts.
- Diverse Accommodations: Offers everything from rustic tent sites to upscale "cottage" rentals and permanent RV spaces.
- Community Clubhouse: A large, inviting space for meetings, social gatherings, and enjoying shared amenities.
If you are interested in visiting or learning more about lot ownership and seasonal stays, you can reach the management office during their regular business hours. Their team is knowledgeable about the local area and can assist with any questions regarding site availability or community regulations.

We come here all the time, fun, fishing, crabbing, boat docks, swimming, arcade, put put golf and golf cart friendly roads makes this place a hoot. For some stuff you need a key card you can get if you are a resident or close friends and can use theirs 😁😉, if not I believe you can access certain things like the pool by talking to the office. With that said there's plenty of camping, fishing and boating for those with them as well as a nice playground to do with no card needed. There are bath houses everywhere so if you camp by tent you still have a shower and bathroom just bring your own soap and towel 😉 I also recommend if you bring or rent a golf cart for this trip that you spend time looking around at all the amazing things people have done to the bought properties and the small but great businesses some have set up. You can order crabs for lunch and pick up fire wood just by riding the roads in trails end.
