Rainbow Acres Campground Introduce
For Virginians seeking a peaceful escape from the bustling corridors of Richmond or the Hampton Roads area, Rainbow Acres Campground offers a rustic and inviting retreat in the heart of King and Queen County. Situated along the scenic banks of the Mattaponi River, this campground serves as a gateway to the natural beauty of the Middle Peninsula. Known for its laid-back atmosphere and riverside charm, it provides a variety of ways to experience the outdoors, whether you prefer the comfort of a modern RV, the simplicity of a tent, or the convenience of a rental cabin. It is a place where the pace of life slows down, allowing residents and visitors alike to reconnect with nature through the gentle flow of the river and the quiet of the surrounding woodlands.
Rainbow Acres is particularly recognized for its community-oriented spirit, often hosting families who return season after season. The park caters to both short-term travelers looking for a weekend getaway and long-term seasonal campers who have made the riverbank their second home. With its combination of natural riverfront access and a full schedule of organized activities, the campground strikes a balance between a quiet wilderness experience and a lively community center. For those who enjoy the specific "river life" culture of Virginia—fishing, paddling, and evening bonfires—this destination stands out as a hidden gem in King and Queen Court House.
Located at 514 James Rd, King and Queen Court House, VA 23085, Rainbow Acres Campground is strategically positioned for easy access from several major Virginia cities. It is approximately an hour’s drive from Richmond and just over two hours from the Washington D.C. area, making it an ideal choice for a local excursion. The route into the campground takes visitors off the main highways and onto the scenic back roads of Virginia's rural landscape. While the final approach involves more rustic roads, including stretches that can be sandy or muddy during the rainy season, the payoff is a secluded setting that feels far removed from the noise of the interstate.
The campground has made significant efforts to ensure that its facilities are accessible to all guests. Accessibility features include a wheelchair-accessible entrance, designated parking lots, and restrooms designed for ease of use. Once on-site, the flat terrain of the park makes it relatively easy to navigate for those with mobility concerns. Whether you are arriving with a large motorhome or a compact passenger vehicle, the on-site parking and clearly marked campsites help streamline the arrival process so you can start your vacation without delay.

Rainbow Acres Campground is worth choosing because it provides an authentic, "no-frills" Virginia river camping experience that prioritizes community and relaxation. For many visitors, the highlight is the staff and the neighbors; the campground is frequently described as a friendly and quiet place where people genuinely help one another out. If you are a fan of traditional camping where kids can run to the playground and the evening is spent watching the sun set over the Mattaponi, this is the place for you. It offers the rare ability to be "off the grid" while still having access to a fully stocked camp store and helpful on-site management.
Furthermore, the variety of activities makes it a versatile destination. It is one of the few places in the region where you can participate in "Mattaponi Madness" drag boat races one weekend and enjoy a quiet, contemplative morning of fishing the next. For families, the presence of the playground and the river beach means the kids are always entertained, while the level, shaded sites under the pine trees provide a comfortable home base for the adults. Whether you are looking for a weekend of high-energy boating or a month of peaceful seasonal living, Rainbow Acres offers a reliable and welcoming environment in a beautiful part of King and Queen County.

Off back roads and the road into there is a mud/sand disaster! The sites are just sand lots. On the phone before arriving was told extention of a few more days was not a problem. However when I went to extended was told "No. We are booked. MANDY SAID NO". Guss was very helpful as was a neighbor. Not another worker there was tho! Couldn't give 0 stars tho.
I have stayed at the camp ground twice this summer and fall. Everyone has been very nice. Very quiet also at night. The staff has also been great. My family loves going here.
It's not bad. Would I go back? No... The guy behind the counter seemed nice enough, the spot he recommended was definitely quiet and was right on the water, though water not accessible unless you walk over to the beach (Tent site w/e)Pros: site (T1) was quiet and secluded, (Thursday) shaded with its own pier. 2 picnic tables, 3 or 4 grills, sink with cold water. The store looked to have a bit of anything you would need. PortaPotties VERY clean and seemed new. Showers nearest to beach decent, just outdated, had hot water. Has laundry area. There are permanent residents, one of which I stopped and talked to, he was so sweet and friendly. Plenty of deadfall for campfire.Cons: Swimming area looked unused, piers need updating, very pricey for just tent camping, driveway extremely bumpy but I'm sure that's due to several sequential hard rains. No access to woods/trails.All in all, this campground could use updating, it just seemed unkempt.
Subpar customer service. I probably would have been better off reserving online or talking to a brick wall than the rep over the phone. Glad I called though. If this is the type of service I get over the phone, I would hate to see how the campground is ran. Honestly, prime example of workers not wanting to work.
LOVE the staff!!! The location is great with some pretty awesome views of the river. We did not have any issues with smells, bugs or rude staff that was mentioned in some other reviews. The staff was super helpful with everything. We were able to enjoy the band playing one evening. I am looking forward to returning in the Summer.
